only fools rush in [ao3] rabbot | 4k | Explicit No day was ever easy anymore, but today was particularly hard — and yet, Robby didn’t feel half of its weight. He was more than aware that it had a lot to do with how Jack’s body heat pressed against him, how the hard muscles of his arm flexed against his own every time they moved in tandem. And above all that, it had to do with the simple fact that Jack was here.
He didn’t make Robby talk about it, he didn’t make him think about it at all. Jack allowed Robby to just exist and let it all seep out of his pores and leave his body, breath by breath.
He was beyond thankful. For tonight, for the last twenty-something years; all of it.
Or
Jack hovers and Robby finds that he doesn’t mind it all that much.

Mercury’s Moon [ao3] rabbot | Chapter 7 | Explicit “Got your keys? Really don’t wanna wake up your roommates.”
Robby wanted to tell Jack that they were both working nights and that no one was home anyway, and that hey, Jack might as well stay the night. But it just felt like way too many words in his current state.
“Robby. Keys.” Jack asked again softly.
“Mm, pocket.” He hummed, leaning back ever so slightly as he tried to find his own center of gravity. Jack reached out a little hesitantly towards Robby’s jacket. “N-no, not that one. The other one.”
Jack sighed in exasperation as he started fishing in his pocket for his keys, but Robby couldn’t quite focus on that. His attention was taken away by how up this close, even in the dim light of the night, Jack’s freckles danced in his view like distant constellations in the sky.
“Jack…” He started leaning in close, even though he wasn’t entirely sure if it was on purpose of if gravity was finally failing him. He put his hands onto Jack’s chest, using them as a crutch, his fingers lightly bending over Jack’s jacket.
“Robby.” It was a warning, though halfhearted.

Mercury’s Moon [ao3] rabbot | chapter 6 | Explicit “Hey, Jack, Gallo said you had a- Uh, sorry.”
For a moment, Jack didn’t understand what happened, but despite so carelessly bursting through the door, Robby now just stood there, his eyes snapping back and forth between Jack and Charice, his expression something akin to panic or… fear.
Jack let his thumb stay where it was on Charice’s cheekbone, rubbing at it calmingly as he purposefully turned back to her and continued to clean the cut over her eyebrow.
“Something you wanted?” He asked evenly without looking back at Robby.
“I, uh, I- Gallo. He said you might need help. But clearly, you two got this, so I’m just gonna…” Robby trailed off and when the silence stretched on, Jack felt something snap inside him.
“You’re just gonna what?” Jack barked, but Robby never replied.
“Jack. He’s gone.” Charice informed him softly.

Mercury’s Moon [ao3] rabbot | chapter 5 | Explicit It was rare for him to be so still; Robby was always running around, just like the rest of them. From one trauma to the next, following up on test results, standing by the proverbial revolving door of the waiting room and skipping meals, one after the other. Some days it made Jack wonder if all the exhaustion and drain on their personal lives was worth it.
His gaze strayed onto Robby’s forehead as he wrinkled it up in concentration, then followed the slope of his nose, right down to where he kept worrying his bottom lip between his teeth. He was flicking a pen back and forth between his fingers, so lost in thought that he didn’t even notice Jack just standing there wordlessly.
Eventually, he made his presence known, making Robby jump just a little, before allowing his frown to give way to a soft smile, his eyes alight with genuine delight at the sight of Jack.
It was a good look on him.

realizations & revelations [ao3] rabbot | 3.2k | Teen + Up “I know, I know, I’m sure he’d be perfectly polite about it. Which is why I’d rather take this to my grave, preferably along with this conversation.” Robby gave her a flat-lipped smile.
“A match made in heaven.” Dana grumbled under her breath, just loud enough for Robby not to miss a single word. She knew better than to try and persuade someone as stubborn as Abbot — at least she knew better now, after actually trying it on three separate occasions. It was his turn.
Robby gave her an inquisitive look, finally, finally seeming to latch onto some of what she has been throwing at him.
On one hand, Dana knew it wasn’t really her secret to tell. On the other hand, was it really a secret when everyone else already knew?
Fuck it.
Or
Dana had it with Robby’s pining and decides to take matters into her own hands.

Mercury’s Moon [ao3] rabbot | chapter 4 | Explicit “What was all that about?” Bernice asked just as he walked by the nurses’ station. He chewed on the inside of his cheeks for a second, looking for the best way to describe what exactly just happened.
“I’m not sure. I think… Dr. Ocampo just overruled Dr. Kinney in there.” He said barely loud enough for Bernice to hear.
“Are you serious? Are they like, fighting?” Gallo chimed in from the other end of the counter, making Robby wonder just how good his hearing must’ve been.
“Has this ever happened before?” His gaze trailed across the ward, settling on Ocampo as tried to comfort the patient’s family, even though he himself seemed more rattled than usual.
“Back when they were still residents.” Bernice said with a dark expression.
“Hard to imagine.”
He tried anyway. But the idea of Kinney caring enough about anything to get into fights with his best friend over it quickly prompted the beginning of a headache.
“It was not pretty, I tell you that much.” Bernice grimaced.

Mercury’s Moon [ao3] rabbot | chapter 3 | Explicit For the rest of his shift, he could feel Jack’s gaze glued to the back of his neck, carrying around his awareness like a rucksack filled with rocks. So, it wasn’t all that surprising when he walked up to Robby in the locker room just as he was tugging his scrub top off to give himself at least a slim chance against the steamy Louisiana heat.
“Hey, how you holdin’ up?” He leaned his shoulder against the neighboring locker and Robby deliberately kept his gaze on the inside of his own.
“Okay, I guess. Considering.”
“How about we go get something to eat, huh? I’m off in two hours.” Jack offered gently, prompting Robby to turn to him with a confused frown. “Come on, it’ll help. I promise.”
“No, I think I’m just gonna head home and pass out. But, uh, thanks.”
“Suit yourself.” Jack said with a curt nod and bopped out of the room.
Robby shut his locker with a heavy sigh. He knew Jack just wanted to help, but he couldn’t stand the idea of looking into his eyes and finding the same judgement he had in the mirror.

Mercury’s Moon [ao3] rabbot | chapter 2 | Explicit “Robby, Ambulance Bay.” Kinney called over from a few curtains down. “We got some criticals coming in.”
Robby groaned as he waved his patient off, telling him to wait in chairs until someone came out with his prescription and discharge papers.
“MVA. Wanna bet it was a drunk driver?” Abbot scoffed as he walked by, holding onto his stethoscope not to drop it in his rush. Robby quickly caught up to him.
“What? Aren’t we supposed to be closed for trauma?”
“Can’t. We’re still better staffed than Tulane.”
Not that it mattered, Robby thought. Tulane was this big, fancy hospital right across the road. Most of the patients they treated here wouldn’t even have been allowed past the threshold over there.

Mercury’s Moon [ao3] rabbot | chapter 1 | Explicit “You might wanna stick with him.” Robby followed his line of sight, landing on Abbot across the hall as he dragged a hand over his face and lifted his eyes onto the ceiling, as if asking for strength from above.
“Who? Abbot?”
“Yes, him. I see a lot of cocky wannabe doctors coming through these doors, but he’s the first one that can actually back it up. I think he could use someone more… level-headed too. You know, to balance things out.”
“I don’t know, sir…” Robby bit his cheek hesitantly.
‘Cocky’ wasn’t beginning to cover the guy’s attitude and Robby had a feeling that next time he would need even less of a talking-into to help with whatever crazy thing Abbot would get up to.
Or
Robby and Jack have a complicated history, spanning over two decades.
