First humans ever to leave the solar system suddenly drop out of communications and the ship can't be found with any equipment. After one month of no contact their home countries start reluctantly holding funerals for the space heroes only for them all to turn up, healthy, well fed and extremely disoriented, in the middle of Tokyo, talking about alien abduction. Turns out that aliens found the poor humans straying out of their solar system, presumably lost, and took them to Alien Wildlife Rehabilitation before dumping them back in the middle of their native habitat.

important to note that wildlife rehabbers dont just go around grabbing animals they think need to be somewhere else. If they did that then that would interfere with how a local popupation might be moving or expanding its habitat.

Wildlife rehabbers only grab animals that are hurt in some way or are in danger of being hurt because they are living where a human does not want them (such as removing a racoon from an attic), or might even be a health hazard for the human...

So... what this implies is that the original spaceship either suffered a malfuncrion and the aliens - noticing how the little ship with the migrating apes on it was suddenly breaking down - swooped in to take care of them and restore them to full health before returning them to their home planet and a popluar human colony.......

OR

The ship was encroaching on the territory of something far more dangerous

I think it would be funny if the "something far more dangerous" was just, like, giant space ships.

It turns out, the milky way is like some kind of protected reserve or park, and as soon as people left it they wandered on to the space version of a busy highway, and their space ship was so small and slow that they had to be picked up and moved like a turtle that decided to cross the road.

The sympathetic aliens rescuing them originally wanted to send them in the direction they were headed and let them keep going (like you should with turtles), but discovered they were very, very, far away from any habitat they could survive in, and so took them to the Alien Wildlife Rehab, who just gave them all a short checkup and returned them to the nearest place where humans could be found.

It just really gets to me that 10 year old Mob walked into Reigen’s office looking for anyone who could give him advice about his powers that are scaring him. And Reigen looked at him and went “This baby child is absolutely delusional, but he looks like he needs someone to say something important to him right now.” And Reigen spun up some bullshit on the spot that became the guiding compass of Mob’s life.

And it’s very important to clarify that Reigen did not -accidentally- give Mob good advice. Because one of Reigen’s most distinct traits is his ability to come up with genuine advice and tell people what they need to be told. But he’ll do this on the spot. He’ll do it wrapped in bullshit. He’ll camp it alongside some conman string. He’ll go along with anything. He’ll pretend anything is true. The grift is, in fact, integral of it.

And I love this dichotomy in him because he’s so precariously set up at all moments to topple. For anyone to call him on his bullshit and use that to dismantle everything he’s said. He was lying. He was scamming you. He was using you.

And yes, he was. But it wasn’t really for service of the con. It was for service of the customer, who needed to hear something important.

A terrified 10 year old walked in because his powers had just hurt his little brother and he was feeling so alone in the world and so dangerous and so scared. And Reigen saved him the way Reigen does best.

my cousin is writing a fantasy story and has been sending me the chapters and asking what i think of it. i read them, try to comment on something in each chapter (even when there's not much progress or anything happening at all) and point out if there's any mispells or if there's something that is confusing (is this like this on purpose or you messed up the flow?). im basically the beta reader now and here lay two problems:

  1. my cousin has a different fantasy background knowledge than me. they actually play d&d and are following the classes, species, and magic logic of it. my main influence is world of warcraft and the differences makes it so i don't really know if they're missing out on any nuance or plot point or the like on the story, and i feel unsure on what suggestions would be reasonable and what would be "this isnt tailored for me, so im going to influence you in changing it". i dont want to be an asshole with their vision.
  2. the story is written on our mother language and i find it so so so fucking cringe!! for me, our mother language is the language of real life and work and formality and serious business; while english is the language of the fantastic and fantasy and magic and the unreal. in part because of a lack of gendered words and conjugations (you can be a they and it doesn't sound forced into the language; you can be an it and it doesn't sound dehumanizing like it would in my language), in part because lack of formality tones when speaking besides sir and madam and such titles.

the story is very much a "first time taking writing seriously and publishing smt", and so it suffers a little with pacing and descriptions, but its good and I'd like very much to see how far they will take this new hobby, and how they will improve in the long term. I'm amazed they decided to come up to me (me!!) with something that looks so personal as their writing.

i keep thinking about those posts where writers say that comments and engagement are important to wanting to keep writing, how when they first sent me the link i could have just said "cool" and they would have very probably felt it like a rejection and become more discouraged. how brave it was to come to me for this (we are not as close as we were as children), and how things would be different if i had reacted in a more lackluster manner.

If this is your cousin’s first foray into writing, then you’ve correctly judged the importance of enthusiasm and encouragement. You engaging and being interested at all is far more important at this stage than giving detailed critical feedback, which it seems you already know.

In terms of useful feedback, your different fantasy background is extremely useful. Assuming that everyone else has the same knowledge base you have is the main mistake that most beginner writers make. You not knowing something and noting it is very useful data for them.

Your cousin has probably not learned this yet, but re: convincing them to change stuff, the most valuable data they can get from you is how you feel, not your best guess as to how to change it. If you’re concerned about influencing them to make unnecessary changes, you can simply tell them what the problem is (“Wait, when did he get the golden sword?” “I don’t understand her reasoning here”), without proposing specific solutions.

As a native English speaker I have no advice re: language. But if your native language has a fair number of native speakers, I can guarantee that there’s a specific market out there who would be delighted to find fantasy books in it, and there may even be a cultural campaign somewhere to encourage their creation. As you point out, different things are easier or harder to express in different languages; more than once I’ve wished I was writing in a language with a more specific and informative set of pronouns like Japanese, or one where non-gendered or non-human-specific third person pronouns were standard so that I could avoid gendering characters in a more natural and less noticeable manner. I have no advice, though, on your reaction re: cringe; this might just be a difference of opinion that you and your cousin will need to keep stepping over.
