about

With the world unfolding as it is, I’ve found it impossible to write about the things I used to. Lots of things matter less; some matter more. And so this started off as a song about a house on a hill, a brick-and-mortar prayer to the gods of domesticity and co-habitation. Like, “please let this moving-in-together thing work.” Then, as the world around us slid further into dystopia, the house became more tower-like, with genocidal horrors unfolding outside and the deafening dissonance of attempted normality coming in through the cracks. What if we have totally different grief reactions? What if we just pretend it’s not happening at all?

And yes, our landlord really does live in our basement. Except now we’re moving to another house in the same neighborhood. A Lincoln Heights Part 2. So I’ll have to write at least one more song.

I played the instruments and recorded it (in Lincoln Heights). Chris King kindly and expertly mixed it.

lyrics

LINCOLN HEIGHTS

Isn’t it so weird, it was right there in front of me
High on the hilltop, a portal, a gateway a door
Even though our landlord’s gonna live in our basement
He said not to worry about the noises coming through the floor

So tell me how we make it
Heaven on the front porch
Tell me about it
View across the skyline
Chinatown to Burbank
Tell me about it

And I will bite my tongue and watch your love arrive
Cos there’s nothing more that I can do tonight
But turning down the voices, tuning out the faces can’t make it right.

One day we’ll have windows that block out the sirens
And don’t you feel shiny and clean here, away from it all?
Watch every hospital blown to pieces oh I can’t
Wrap your heart in plastic now cos they’re coming for us all

So, tell me how we make it
Heaven on the front porch
Tell me about it
Hanging in the ether
Miles from the freeway
Tell me about it

And even if it’s not true
I want you to tell me
Tell me it’s easy
Living with you
And even if it’s not true
When the world comes through and nothing’s right
We’ll make it look easy; babe let’s never fight

Cos the fires can’t reach us
And the floods are all made up
And the violence is out there
But not for nice people like us

And I never get angry,
And I never get tired,
And I never get moody
And I never get frightened
And neither do you.
