Disappointed
I have insured both my home and car with RACV for many years and I am a Silver Member.
This year, my car insurance premium increased by more than AUD 1,000 compared to last year. When I asked for an explanation, I was not given a clear or reasonable answer — I was simply told that the price was “computer generated,” with no explanation as to why it had increased so significantly from the previous year.
When I raised a complaint, RACV did not properly address the issue and instead only sent the policy documents by post. I called again today and experienced the same lack of transparency. Even more concerning, the new quotation was AUD 500 higher than the quotation I received just two weeks ago, for exactly the same coverage.
This is extremely disappointing from such a long-established and respected Australian company. RACV’s attitude toward long-term customers has clearly changed for the worse. It now feels like the right time to move to another insurance provider.
There are some good people who strive to do the right thing.
I was convinced of the poor rating for RACV after reading most reviews but there is always an exception to the rule, and that is AVA SCOTT from RACV
She was understanding, empathetic and helpful/supportive in our discussion of RACV communication and Integrity. RACV needs more people like her to be able to help members appreciate value and honesty being the best policy.
Untrained, Bigoted Agents
More than 3 different times the agents over the phone have been transphobic to my friends and family. Absolute disgrace & unAustralian behaviour.
On top of that they don’t keep proper track of their records. You pay your monthly fee or an excess, you have PROOF you paid it, and they still constantly call or mail you saying you haven’t. Multiple people I know pay their bills and then get hounded saying they haven’t (and then, of course, they can’t sort it out because of the bigoted agents hanging up on them).

I rang roadside assist to change tyre
I rang up roadside assistance they came and left as I missed the call, by 4min so went out to see and he was gone. Rang up again to get racv back again. I have a brand new car. It had a dead flat tyre, he wanted me to drive of grass to put on concrete. I said no as it would wreck my tyre, but he refused to change tyre on grass. I rang my dad. He said the same as me. So racv man got in his car and left!!
My first experience with racv was absolutely horrible. I'm only a P plater and now I would rather not use them but that's who my roadside assistance is through with my new car.
It's a 1 star from me!!! It was absolutely disgusting as lots of people rave about racv.

Over a year later, no repairs, no accommodation, no compensation
It has now been over one year since 5th of Jan 2025 my insurance claim was lodged and I am still no closer to having my home restored.
RACV provided no accommodation support and no meaningful compensation, despite large parts of my home being unusable. I have been living for over a year without a usable lounge room, kitchen, dining area, or living space, while caring for a household of five people, including my niece and nephew. The impact on daily life has been enormous.
RACV engaged InsureBuild, and the trades they approved caused further damage to my property rather than repairing it. Poor workmanship and a complete lack of oversight left my home in a worse condition than before the claim. Instead of fixing the damage, the situation deteriorated.
Communication has been slow, inconsistent, and reactive. Promises are made and then ignored. Progress only occurs when chased, and even then it rarely results in action. After exhausting all reasonable attempts to resolve this directly, the matter is now with AFCA, where it has also been ongoing for an extended period.
This level of claims handling is absolutely appalling. For an insurer that promotes trust and member support, RACV has failed on every level — claims management, contractor oversight, communication, and basic duty of care.
I would strongly caution anyone considering RACV insurance. When you actually need support, this experience shows how easily you can be left to struggle on your own by RACV and IAG. Do not use and avoid at all costs.
An important tip for dealing with RACV
An important tip for anyone dealing with RACV car insurance. I have had to take them to the financial ombudsman who is also very frustrated by this tactic but cannot do anything about it. If you are offered a direct contact number with an assessor because it’s “more convenient” than the call center do not call them, these interactions are not logged, off the record and they are completely unaccountable for anything they say or promise during these calls. Instead do everything through the call centre or via the online chat where a detailed log is kept. These staff will call the assessor on your behalf and log the interaction with them.

been a very loyal customer with RACV for my car insurance since 1981 but the last couple of years they have increased my premims from 30 - 100% for no reason. I have made no claims nor incurred any demerit points. I have now taken my business away to GIO and YOUI ( I have 6 cars)
Tried to re-insure my second house…
I tried to re-insure my second house while it is on the market to be sold. I had had it insured for over 10 years, home and contents then landlord's, with racv but let it lapse after the tenants moved out while i figured out what insurance to get. When I tried to re-insure it they told me because it was vacant and this was "new business" they wouldn't insure it. I have had three properties and three cars insured with them for over 10 years. They have taken tens of thousands of dollars in insurance premiums from me, but I am now new business and they won't insure my house just because it is vacant. What happened to looking after loyal customers? Where's the loyalty from them? None. I will certainly be changing all of my current policies and never recommend anyone ever use them. In fact if you have a policy look elsewhere. They will show you no loyalty? Why should you?

Really bad service in road assistance
I am client of RACV since 2013 with múltiple products. At the beginning the company was fantastic, but gradually they changed they policy I think, because for now it is more important the payment that they get from client than provide a good service. Today I ring them because it dark and a light in my car was not working, but they said in 2 hrs and 30 minutes probably the patrol will arrived. When I ask why I need wait to much, the answer was "if you prefer, you can cancel the request". How can be possible?
Do not use RACV insurance
My partner had been with RACV for more than 30 years with car and household insurance making no claims.
Unfortunately she had a minor accident in a new car being her fault.
After lodging all the required information such as photos and all the relevant paperwork she thought the car would be repaired.
Instead it took weeks to notify it was a write off.
Being fully insured she thought she would have a replacement car to use until the claim was finalised . No they said as it was her fault so no car to use.
Many phone calls to incompetent staff went on for months with no resolution.
Then they didn't believe her version of events even with photos and witness evidence to prove her story.
They refused to pay out the claim till she was grilled for 1.5hrs by an independent fraud investigator .
After having a near mental breakdown and crying from all the stress of making a claim the fraud investigator found no fraudulent behaviour occurred.
RACV were still not willing to pay out so then wanted the car forensically tested. This caused more delays without a car and losing so much with loss of income and work through her disability support work my partner was distraught and financially stressed.
After 4 months of treating my partner like a criminal they finally decided to pay the claim without any apologies for the stress and financial loss to my partner.
The RACV then tried to sign her up for another year of comprehensive insurance, she flatly declined and also cancelled all her home policies as well as her car policies.
Bottom line is don't use RACV as they will treat you like a criminal and do all they can to break you.
Horrendous treatment of their customers
Disgusting treatment following a no fault accident claim when someone ran up the back of my car. RACV is making me jump through endless hoops in quest for constant information relating to the claim. Treating the matter like a police investigation which it isn't and telling me I 'must' co-operate even if they pay the claim. RACV is causing huge unnecessary distress at Christmas time. They are incredibly difficult and bureaucratic. I am going to cancel my policy and go elsewhere as it just isn't worth it. No wonder people are nowadays taking the risk and getting around uninsured.
Beware
Beware! My car was in an accident and left in the hands of RACV. When I went to collect my belongings they were all gone and no one can explain where they are. These include security items and my dash cam cables and all. Fair to say I will be cancelling all my polices with RACV.
Do you value integrity?
Is RACV your insurer? Think again. For 42 years I trusted them with multiple homes, home contents, cars, and landlord insurance. I never lodged a claim. Then I suffered serious malicious damage and vandalism on a rental property. I supplied all the evidence: statements, photographs, rental ledgers, everything they requested. Eleven tortuous months of writing emails, making calls and dealing with operators who just shuffled the claim to the side. Eventually, due to my persistence, they paid out on part of the claim, saying the rental loss would be dealt with later. Finally, they announced, ‘We are not paying out on the lost rent.’ If you value integrity, find another insurer now.
DO NOT USE RACV SECURITY

Day prior, to installation, tradesman, called me to complain he was unhappy working on Saturday. Told him, RACV made the appointment .
Security system can only be purchased over the phone and I paid immediately, before installation and they RACV e-mailed me the receipt.
On the day, tradesman attended my property. Tenant said he only had personal wifi, so got tradesman install one camera in his backyard and give him full control of both cameras, without my knowledge or consent, although I was paying for everything.
Told RACV, dismantle cameras and refund my money for not placing them where I asked or even telling me, he had a problems and give me the opportunity to either stop installation or see if there was another type of cameras. However, since learnt RACV only have one type of old fashioned cameras. They refuse to dismantle cameras and refund my money.
hey insist, once I paid for cameras, it's not their problem. Then, removed camera from tenant's premises and installed both cameras on my premises, despite tradesman knowing there's no wifi connected.
Both cameras don't work and are unfit for purpose, thereby being in breach of Consumer Affairs Laws, but RACV don't care. They say that once an item's paid for, it's not their problem and refuse to dismantle the useless, not for purpose cameras and refund my money.
Have been a long time customer of RACV and a premium member, but have decided to leave them, as they're dishonest and force unfit items on to customers, just to get a sale.
Why I Have Moved My Home Insurance Away from RACV
In my experience, dealing with RACV has been extremely difficult and very disappointing. It felt like they brought in multiple builders, engineering firms, and plumbers mainly to look for reasons not to approve my claim. The entire process was frustrating and disheartening.
It makes me wonder why we pay insurance premiums if, when damage occurs, the support we expect isn’t there.
