“Have a good day, Anne. Y/N.”
With a soft nod and a gentle smile, you bid your new guardians far well. “Thank you, Ms. Cuthbert, Mr. Cuthbert.”
Anne beside you practically beamed, lips curled into a bright smile, the corners of her lips practically meeting her eyes. She turned to Marilla and Matthew, same as you, albeit with much more enthusiasm as she waved goodbye. “Bye Marilla! Matthew!”
With that, the two of you turned so you were facing forwards once again. While you calmly walked beside Anne, your stomach bundled with nerves, Anne took each step with a certain skip. Positivity and excitement radiated from her entire being, and she glowed under the bright sun. You, though content, were more calm with your movements.
It had always been like this. Back at the orphanage, Anne and you had been best friends, but she was the one who gleamed with imagination and creativity. You were just more silent, politely thanking those who gave you chances and accepting what you were given with no arguments added. That was just how you were, and it was why you and Anne balanced each other so well.
While she brought the fun, the imagination into your life - you were like her wall. You helped keep her calm, among other things. And that had always worked just fine for the both of you.
“I still just can’t believe it!” Anne gushed, bringing your focus back on her and away from your pondering thoughts. With a raised brow, you patiently waited for her to continue as she grinned over at you. “I knew that all I ever did was talk about you, but I never could have imagined Marilla would agree to adopting you.”
“Truthfully, I can barely believe it myself,” you admitted, tucking a strand of your H/C hair abashedly. “It still seems so surreal.”
“Well, believe it!” Anne suddenly turned to you, halting the both of you in your walk to grasp your hands in her own. Gripping them tightly, she chuckled brightly; “now we truly can be best friends forever!”
With a soft giggle yourself, you nodded, turning back to walking. “The asylum was absolutely barbaric without you,” you huffed, eyes narrowing slightly in distaste. “I had no one to tell me all the wonderful stories you do, Anne.”
“Worry not.” Anne said, nodding her head, assured. “I have plenty of stories to tell you of my travels, not to mention of what i’ve encountered since moving to Green Gables. Not to mention school, oh, I am just so delighted that you’ll be joining me!”
You mimicked Anne’s eagerness with a small smile of your own.
“Diana and Ruby are so excited to meet you!”
You raised a brow, “Diana? Ruby?”
“Friends,” Anne explained, crouching slightly so her hat did not get caught on one of the many tree branches in your way. “While school was definitely a strenuous time at first, i’ve found my place there. Diana and Ruby are two marvellous friends i’ve made.”
You felt a spike of jealousy hit you. While you couldn’t necessarily blame Anne for making friends while the two of you had been separated, you couldn’t help but wonder what would’ve happened to your so-called friendship if you’d been adopted or sold to some other family. You’d spent most of your time back in the orphanage missing Anne, had she done the same?
Anne must of noticed the crestfallen expression that had etched onto your face, and with a hand set on your shoulder, she frowned worriedly. “Do not fret, dear friend of mine. I’ve told Diana and Ruby all of you, i’m sure they’ll love you.”
With a nervous chuckle, you pushed back your true worries, masking them with others. “I just can’t help but feel out of place.”
“Not by my side,” Anne assured, smiling at you.
You returned the gesture, and you and Anne continued your long walk to the school. Anne filled the journey with stories - some made up, some true. You felt your heart warm with content at the familiar sensation of Anne’s silly but detailed stories. They had once been, besides Anne herself, the saving grace of that horrid asylum. You’d nearly lost your mind without them (and her).
“Here we are,” Anne announced, pulling you from your thoughts once more.
You felt your step slow, your eyes widening at the sight before you. You probably seemed all too silly, being so nervous but overjoyed at the sight of a school. But you’d never seen one before, and you still found it hard to believe that you were here. Now.
“Trust me,” Anne scoffed, falling into you dramatically. “It’s not all that wonderful once you’re inside.”
You giggled half-heartedly, your eyes still mesmerized by the structure before you.
Then, you felt Anne pull on the grip she held on your hand, tugging you forward. “Come on,” she laughed, “the day awaits!”
You let Anne pull you along, letting your eyes wander around with a certain twinkle in them. You barely even registered the fact that you’d actually made it inside the school, until Anne pulled the both of you to a halt, taking off her hat and coat. “Hang your coat there and your hat there, right beside mine. Then, grab your books, we’ll meet the others.”
Your nerves finally got the best of you. As Anne finished excitedly telling you her plans, you felt your heart begin pounding erratically against your chest – so loud you could practically hear it. What if Diana and Ruby didn’t like you? Or the other students? You knew absolutely nothing, how were you meant to-
Your thoughts were once again interrupted, this time not by Anne, and rather by the feeling of another body slamming into your own. The surprised of it and sheer force of it sent you stumbling backwards, nearly losing your own footing before a hand grasped your wrist, steadying you.
“Woah,” a deep voice chuckled, “you okay, miss?”
Blinking, you glanced up, seeing the boy you’d bumped into you. You felt yourself tense at the sight of the boy, regrettably the thought that he was cute passed through your mind as you felt your cheeks flush slightly in response. “Um,” you stammered, “yeah, yeah… i’m okay.”
The boy’s lips curled into half smirk, chuckling softly. “Sorry,” he said softly, “I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
“No, no, it’s m-”
“Gilbert,” Anne grumbled, coming to your side once again. Your wide eyes fell on her at the sound of her voice, them somewhat narrowing in bafflement when you saw her eyes set in a harsh glare, arms crossed over her chest as she regarded the boy, Gilbert before you.
With a smirk, Gilbert nodded at your friend. “Anne,” he greeted, before his eyes slid back on you; “and you are?”
You opened your mouth to answer, but Anne once again interrupted you; “Y/N,” she answered for you before grabbing your hand. “And we are just leaving.” Then, before you knew it, you were being pulled along once again. But, you couldn’t help but let your gaze remain on Gilbert, his own remaining on yours as you were pulled away.
And then, you felt a sharp tug on your arm, turning your attention back on Anne. “Who was that?” You asked, head turning around to glance at him once again.
“Gilbert Blythe,” Anne groaned, rolling her eyes. “But it doesn’t matter, you can’t talk to him.”
“What?” You huffed, furrowing your brows. “Why?”
“Ruby’s got a crush on him,” Anne explained, nodding her head at one of the many girls the both of you were headed towards. “Called dibs three years ago.”
You didn’t say anything, but for some reason your heart felt heavy with disappointment. You didn’t want to ruin the chance of friends on your first day here, but…
“Y/N,” Anne called, “this is Diana, Ruby, and…” Anne continued to name off the girls stood before you, but you found your mind distracted. As the girls before you introduced themselves, you found your eyes falling on that of Gilbert once more, cheeks flushing slightly when you realized his gaze was already on your own.
There was definitely something special about that boy.
-
With a sigh, you played with the hem of your dress. Even from where you sat, you could hear the loud chattering and giggling of Anne and the other girls.
First impressions: her friends were a bunch of gossiping young girls. And it didn’t settle right within you. Anne hadn’t been like that back in the orphanage… what else did you no longer know about her? You felt like you barely knew the girl before you, and it practically made you want to cry. But you didn’t want to make a fool of yourself, so you settled for sitting by yourself.
It was only your first day, and you already hated school.
“Here.”
With a soft gasp, you glanced up, pleased when you realized that it was Gilbert who stood before you. Immediately, your slouched position straightened as you mimicked him, smiling up at the boy as he held out an apple towards you. Your eyes slid from his to the fruit, confused. “Is that…?”
“For you?” Gilbert grinned, taking a seat next to you.
“Yeah…”
“It is,” Gilbert confirmed, pushing the apple a little bit more towards you. With a nervous smile and pink cheeks, you raised your hand, gently grabbing the apple from him. “Thank you,” you mumbled, nodding at him, before letting the fruit fall in your laps. “But… why?”
“You seemed lonely,” Gilbert shrugged, “and with a lack of food.”
Glancing past Gilbert, at the girls, you sighed. “The girls have some sort of pack,” you frowned, still baffled by the entire thing.
“They share their lunch,” Gilbert finished, glancing back at the small fort Anne and the others had set up.
“Yeah,” you confirmed, biting your lip. “I didn’t have quite enough it seemed, and… well, I guess I just didn’t feel comfortable there.”
Gilbert’s brows furrowed slightly then, eyes sliding from the fort back to you as he set his hands on his knees. “What about Anne?” He questioned, raising a brow. “You two seemed close.”
“We are,” you said, before your shoulders slouched, “or had been.”
“Had?”
“She seems different,” you explained, eyes narrowing quizzically. The whole idea still puzzled you quite a bit, and you couldn’t completely wrap your head around it. Anne seemed happier, more content, and you were glad - but it almost felt like you were a step behind her. You still had to get used to life here at Green Gables. Get used to having a family, and Anne… well, she already was.
“I can’t rightly explain it,” you sighed, shaking your head. “But nonetheless, i’m sure you don’t truly care about my issues.”
“I don’t mind,” Gilbert shrugged, smiling at you.
You turned to him, surprised. Anne’s words from earlier registered within you, about Ruby having dibs. And part of you felt guilty, as if you were making a mistake. But another part of you, a larger part, didn’t care all that much. Because Gilbert’s words and kindness warmed your heart in a way you’d never experienced before.
“Besides,” Gilbert added, smiling at you, “you looked like you could use a friend.”
-
A week later, and things were looking better.
The girls, specifically Ruby, hadn’t been happy with you after that lunch. And lunches to come. You found yourself hanging with Gilbert more then Anne and the others girls, and Ruby had been fiercely jealous. It took two lunches and the help of Anne to convince the girl that you were merely just friends with the boy and held no deeper feelings. And, that you being friends with him could even help her in the end.
Of course, none of that had been true. Because each minute you spent with Gilbert, you found yourself more and more enamoured by the boy.
Anne wasn’t happy at first, either. She seemed to have a rivalry with the boy and as her best friend, she thought it wasn’t right you were so close with her enemy. But your stubbornness helped her adapt to the idea and as long as you didn’t talk about Gilbert around her, she was fine.
So, that’s how you found yourself. A week later, you sat by Anne during class, spent lunches with Gilbert and if Diana and Ruby could, spent time together after school.
Marilla and Mathew grew more accustomed to your presence, and you grew more comfortable with the idea of having a family. Truthfully, Anne had always been your family, and now it was just larger.
You still found yourself uncomfortable, or rather, unfamiliar at times. But things were looking up and you felt content.
That was, until that morning. Mr. Phillips announced that Gilbert would no longer be attending school, for private reasons, and you felt your heart stricken with worry. Of course, you didn’t announced it or really even show it, but you felt your heart plummet with worry.
So, that day after school, you hadn’t wasted anytime heading over to Gilbert’s to check on him. Anne had been flabbergasted by you, consistently asking you where you were off to in such a rush, but you only answered her questions with limited answers, telling her you wouldn’t be long and not to worry.
You tracked through the snow without a care in the world. Cheeks rosy because of the cold, and your breath smoky. When you finally reached Gilbert’s residence, you found yourself knocking on the front door erratically, desperate for the boy to open up.
“Gilbert!” You called, “Gilbert!”
Still, nothing.
Biting your lip, you knocked once more, voice shrill. “Gilbert, it’s me, Y/N! Open up-”
Your words trailed the moment you heard the familiar lock of the door and then it slowly pull open. You immediately moved to greet Gilbert but found yourself frozen when you saw a much older man - one you could only assume was Gilbert’s father.
He looked awfully pale and quite frankly, not that well. Suddenly, the worry you’d felt all day increased tenfold as you realized just why Gilbert was missing from school.
His father was sick, and by the looks of it, quite possibly dying.
“Mr. Blythe,” you stammered, guilt flooding you.
“Gilbert’s out back, chopping wood,” the man rasped, “I can-”
“No, no,” you rushed, shaking your head. “I’m sorry to have bothered you, Mr. Blythe. I was just worried for Gilbert.”
Realization lit in his father’s eyes. “Oh,” he exclaimed, “you must be Y/N!”
Tucking back a strand of lose hair, you bit your lip; “you know me?”
“Of you. Gilbert has said plenty about you, Y/N.”
“Good things, I hope.”
The man scoffed, as if anything but was preposterous. “Of course,” he assured, “my son thinks quite highly of you, Y/N.”
You felt your heart warm at his words, pleasantly surprised. With a soft nod and a smile, you shuffled back; “well, I must be going back. I would-”
“Y/N?”
You turned, smile falling when you saw Gilbert stepping up the steps beside you. His eyes widened when he saw his dad, immediately rushing past you to his father’s side, hands falling on his shoulders. “What are you doing out of bed?” Gilbert asked, brows drawn in in worry. “Come on, i’ll-”
“I’m fine, thank you, son.” Mr. Blythe shushed, swaying his son’s worry away. “Y/N has come a long way to see you. Wouldn’t want to deny a pretty young lady like herself. I’ll just leave the both of you to it.”
“Let me-”
“Nonsense,” Mr. Blythe scoffed, stepping away from GIlbert’s hands. “Have fun.”
The moment Gilbert’s father was gone, you felt yourself stunned silent. Gilbert turned to you, stepping back out of the house and shutting the door behind him, before stopping before you. “Um,” he mumbled, eyes glanced down, unsure. “Is there…”
“I, um,” you stammered, trying to find the right words. “Mr. Phillips said you weren’t going to be at school, so I was just worried…”
“Oh,” Gilbert mumbled, “well, thank you for your concern.”
You nodded, finally pulling your head up. Seeing Gilbert reminded you of the events that had just transpired and the truth you’d found out. Biting your lip, you frowned heavily, wringing your hands together. “Why… Why didn’t you ever tell me about your dad?” You questioned, nervously glancing up at Gilbert. “I-I mean, it’s not reall-”
“It’s fine,” Gilbert gently cut you off, nodding at you reassuringly. “There just was never really any moment.”
“So… you let me complain about my own issues day after day, when you were dealing with your own, much bigger issues yourself?”
Gilbert smiled softly then, taking a step towards you. You felt your breath spike at the closed distance between the both of you, body stilling when you felt Gilbert’s hand fall on your cheek, pulling your gaze back on his own. “I don’t mind,” he shrugged, “I just like listening to you talk.”
You felt your cheeks flush, and you were sure it was not because of the cold.
“You hardly talk in class or when around Anne, it seems she does all the talking for you,” he joked, eliciting a giggle from your lips. “So, I always make sure you get to talk because of that.”
“You truly are one of a kind, Gilbert.”
Gilbert chuckled, and it practically blew your breath away. Then, he turned his head around, and you were suddenly reminded of his father once again.
“I should go,” you pushed, moving to pull back from his grip. “Your fat-”
Gilbert’s hand slipped from your cheek to your hand, halting your movements as you gasped. Your eyes fell on your entwined hands before slowly sliding up and meeting Gilbert’s own, lips parted in bafflement. “Would you like to stay for dinner?” He offered, eyes hopeful. “Dad doesn’t really come out of his room that often, and i’m sure he’d love the company.”
You knew you shouldn’t - Marilla, Mathew and Anne were probably worried sick as to where you’d run off to. But you felt your heart flutter at his offer, and the idea of spending more time with GIlbert was so rare, especially without the watchful eyes of Ruby and the rest, that you couldn’t pass it up.
So, slowly, you squeezed Gilbert’s hand in return, smiling.
“I’d love to.”
