You felt like a fool, having been too excited to grab the proper jacket for the cold weather outside. Weather in Canada was always freezing, especially around winter time, so truly, you had no one to blame but yourself. Still, that didn’t mean you couldn’t sulk to yourself as you made your way to school, hugging yourself as best you could to warm yourself up.

School was much more exciting now that Miss Stacy was your full time teacher. And sometimes, that excitement got the better of you, as today clearly proved.

    “Y/N!”

The sound of your name pulls you from your thoughts. Raising a single brow, you turn your head over your shoulder, a pleasant and soft smile falling on your lips when you see Gilbert Blythe heading your way. Often, if you managed to time it perfectly, you and Gilbert would run into each other on the way to school. Today, clearly, was one of those days.

“Good morning, Gilbert,” you greet as he falls in step with you, smiling brightly at him.

He mimics your smile, his cheeks slightly red from the bitter cold touching them. You can’t help but touch your own cheeks in response, hoping that the little bit of heat still running through you would help warm your freezing skin. As you let out a heavy breath, you can see it form before you, signaling just how cold you truly were.

Honestly, your mother will be having your head when you arrive home later that day in nothing but a spring jacket.

    “Are you cold?”

You blink at the sound of Gilbert’s question, turning your head to your right slightly to meet his lips. You’re not oblivious to the fear in his eyes, so, with a small smile and a shrug, you shake your head; “only a little,” you mumble. “We’re almost at school, so I should-”

Your words trail as you notice Gilbert pulling off his own winter jacket, before extending it towards you. You don’t except it right away, meeting his eyes as the both of you fall to a stop, turning to face him. “Here,” he speaks up, “take my jacket.”

“Oh, no,” you mumble, shaking your head as your lips part. “I couldn’t possibly-”

“It’s honestly no problem,” Gilbert assures, smiling softly your way. “Besides, what kind of boy would I be if I let a pretty girl like yourself freeze?”

You’re sure your cheeks are red now, and not from the cold.

Reaching out, you grab a hold of Gilbert’s jacket, but, pause; “are you sure? I honestly will be fine until we arrive-”

“I’m positive,” Gilbert cuts off gently, “here,” he calls, grabbing the coat before stepping behind you. You feel your eyes widen as he pulls the jacket over your shoulders, helping you slide your arms through the holes, before pulling it around yourself properly. As Gilbert makes his way back beside you, you send him a bright smile.

    “Thank you.”

    “Of course.”

Some would say he was too young. That he couldn’t possibly know what love felt like, especially after such a short encounter.

But Gilbert didn’t really care. Cause he knew what he felt.

He knew that the way he felt about you wasn’t just some feeling that would pass. There had been something in your eyes, the only part of your face Gilbert had truly been able to see, that just told him so. And after you’d run off, in a flurry of skirt and panic, Gilbert knew he needed to find you.

But you didn’t go to school, and no one really seemed to know who you were from the limited description Gilbert could provide them with. Then again, that wasn’t really his fault.

All he’d seen what you E/C eyes and H/C hair. And that was enough for him to fall in love.

But here you were. Stood before him.

You weren’t the only girl in the world to have E/C eyes and H/C hair, but Gilbert just knew.

You seemed astonished, panicked, while Gilbert stood there with a big, bright grin plastered on his face.

“Yes,” he exclaimed, “I found you.”

And your voice was quiet, just as it’d been that night; “found me?”

“After that night, at the Barry’s, when you ran out… I haven’t stopped searching for you since.”

Your heart fluttered in response. No one, not since your dad died, as cared for you so much. And after such a short meeting as well…

“Why?” You questioned, baffled. “All we did was dance to one song…”

“There’s just something in your eyes,” Gilbert whispered, his own softening in response. “What is your name? I told you mine, but you never had the chance to tell me yours.”

“Oh,” you mumbled, glancing at your feet before glancing past Gilbert’s shoulders. “I really should be go-”

“Just your name,” Gilbert interrupted, desperate. “Just so I know how to find you.”

And you knew you shouldn’t, given the circumstances, but you couldn’t help yourself. With a small smile, you tucked a strand of lose hair behind your ear, smiling faintly. “Y/N.”

“Y/N,” Gilbert repeated, voice light. “What a beautiful name.”

“Thank you,” you whispered, blushing. For a moment, neither of you did anything, before you blinked. “Yes, well, I should be-”

    “Oh, yeah, of course.”

    “Bye, Gilbert.”

Grinning your way, Gilbert nodded; “good bye, Y/N.”

And something told you, you’d be seeing a lot more of him.

Honestly, he really had tried. And to be honest, you’re not even sure where it had gone wrong.

But somehow, you’re soaked, head from toe, and you lost your shoe somewhere along the way. You have no idea where it is… or when that even happened.

Gilbert seems disappointed, and you understand, but you can’t stop the laugh that practically bursts from your lips as the two of you stand there, soaking wet. The whole situation is just too funny not to laugh at, and truthfully, more enjoyable and memorable than any date Gilbert could’ve taken you on.

“I’m sorry,” Gilbert finally says as he walks you home. You’re still wet and you just know your mothers going to have a fit when she sees you. Yet, you can’t find a single bone in your body that cares.

With a raise brow, and naive eyes, you turn your head to glance at Gilbert. “For what?” You question, voice soft.

“For today,” he clarifies, “I wanted today to be special. Our first date…”

“This was the best date ever,” you shrug, grinning at him. “Honestly.”

    “Wait,” Gilbert pauses, baffled. “Really?”

“Yeah,” you laugh. “I had a wonderful time. I’m sure mother isn’t going to be too happy about this dress,” you pick at the wet cloth. “But I loved today.”

Gilbert seems both relieved and astonished.

“Well,” he says after a moment, “I’m glad.”

You smile. “I still can’t believe you tripped, fell into the water and took me with you!” You exclaim, hoping to make him feel better as you giggle.

Gilbert grins, “it was pretty funny, wasn’t it?”

    “Extremely so.”

You sighed, staring down at yourself in distaste. Disgust.

You’d always had an issued with your self-image, but some days were worse than others. Today was one of those days.

Maybe it was because you weren’t the traditional beauty. Maybe it was because girls like Josie teased you for your looks and maybe it was because boys like Billy called you a dog, and other demeaning names. Animals.

You didn’t have fancy dresses like Diana, or extravagant hair like Josie. You didn’t have rosy cheeks like Ruby and bright, twinkling eyes like Prissy. You were just generic, and being generic had never helped girl.

“None of those things are true.”

You gasped, eyes widening as you turned your head, only to meet Gilbert’s eyes.

Has you said all of that aloud?

Gilbert took a step forward, his cheeks slightly rosy from the cold winter air, his bright red flannel jacket a contrast to his beige coloured top. He smiled at you softly, raising his hand to brush back a strand of lose hair that had fallen into your eyes and tucking it behind your ear, before letting his hand settle on your cheek.

“Doesn’t matter what anyone else says,” he whispered, his breath fogging up before you. You blinked, stunned by his words. “All that matters is that none of it’s true.”

You honestly shouldn’t be surprised. This isn’t the first time that Gilbert’s tried to convince you that your self-conscious thoughts aren’t true. That he thinks you’re beautiful, and that’s true.

It’s all that’s ever been true.

But you find yourself stunned speechless every time he does. Maybe because you constantly question how someone like Gilbert could like, possibly even love, someone like you. Who is generic, boring and ugly compared to the other girls in class. And then every time he does say something, insures you that he believes the words he speaks, you’re reminded that none of that is true.

Gilbert does care for you. Love you. Like you. All of the above.

    And that has never changed.

    “I think you’re beautiful.”

You blink, your lips curling into a soft smile. The self-doubt, hurt, and pity doesn’t leave but you feel better. Gilbert always knows how to make you feel better.

You raise your hand, setting it over the one on your cheek and squeeze.

    “Thank you.”

Pulling your arms through the sleeves of your jacket, you laughed gently at something Anne said, your eyes crinkling in delight.

Diane mimicked your laugh, rolling her eyes slightly at Anne’s vivid imagination. She always did tell the best stories, and honestly, you can’t believe you ever survived school before Anne came along. You can’t imagine how bored you must have been. Your only saving grace having been Gilbert.

Of course, no one, not even now, knew that the two of you were dating. But before Anne came along, and the two of you became extremely close, along with Diana, Gilbert had been the one thing that kept you strong. Of course, he still was, just with the added addition of Anne. But given Ruby’s crush on the boy, you had to keep your relationship a secret from everyone.

It was a pain, but you didn’t want to hurt Ruby’s feelings and be at the risk of Josie making you her number one target. Besides, as long as you knew, that’s all that mattered to you.

And as you stood there, commenting on Anne’s made up story, you never noticed Gilbert making his way over to you. He already had his own coat on, and was ready to go, but you never noticed him out of the corner of your hair.

“Uh, Y/N?” Anne called, having noticed Gilbert, unlike you.

It wasn’t until you’d finished buttoning up your coat, had you noticed him, said boy leaning forward to press a gentle kiss against your cheek.

The actions elicited a gasp of surprise from your lips, turning to the boy with wide eyes. You were all too aware of the eyes that fell on you at Gilbert’s display of affection.

And as you met Gilbert’s eyes, you saw his own widen in response, as if remembering what he’d done and what it meant. But then, as you stared back at him, and he glanced around, he almost shrugged, before grinning back over at you. “I’ll walk you home?” He offered, holding his hand out towards you.

Your lips parted, the words caught in your throat. All had grown silent, until you heard the softest sound of a whimper and your eyes snapped back into the classroom where you saw Ruby, eyes watering.

    “Y/N?”

Biting your lip, you let your hand fall into Gilbert’s, him immediately squeezing it in response.

“Sure,” you mumbled, voice soft with uncertainty.

Gilbert grinned, moving to step out of the school house and pulling you along. You managed to catch Anne’s eyes on the way out, shrugging desperately in response before falling back by Gilbert’s side, the two of you alone.

“What was that?” You screeched, turning to Gilbert with wide eyes.

    Gilbert shrugged.

“Don’t you shrug me, Blythe!” You exclaimed, “we just broke Ruby’s heart.”

“That wasn’t my intention, I swear,” Gilbert said earnestly, glancing at you. “It just slipped my mind, and besides, i’m tired of hiding my feelings for you anyway. I want to be able to hold your hand whenever I want. Be with you, whenever I want.”

His words calmed you, warming your heart.

With a lasting glance back at the school, you fell back in step with Gilbert. “I guess you’re right.”

“See?” Gilbert smiled, squeezing your hand in reassurance. “All will blow over. And besides, we can always spend lunches together.”

The idea brought a smile to your lips, “I would love that.”

“You can’t hang out with Gilbert anymore.”

    “Excuse me?”

You spun faster than you ever think you have, eyes widening considerably at Josie’s words. When you turned to face her, you found yourself slightly surprised at the sight of not only Josie stood before you, but Diana, Ruby and more. But what stunned you more than anything else was the sight of Ruby crying, cuddled into Josie’s side.

What could’ve happened to make her so upset?

“You heard me,” Josie snapped, narrowing her eyes darkly your way.

You paused a moment, lips parting as you desperately tried to find the words to say in response. You glanced around, noticing the many eyes upon you, and meeting Gilbert’s from inside the school room. You seemed to be the only one confused in that moment, and even Gilbert looked a little nervous by what was happening.

Though, none of the boys could actually hear what you or the other girls were saying, given that they were still inside. But it seemed, Josie and her pose had gathered quite a crowd.

Turning back to Josie, you rose a brow; “I heard you,” you nodded, “i’m just not sure if I understood.”

With a huff, Josie rolled her eyes. She let go of Ruby, passing her off to Diana before stepping forward. You leaned back slightly in discomfort when she grew extremely close to you, her eyes still narrowed threateningly as she pointed a finger at you. “We know you’ve been hanging out with Gilbert.”

    “Yes,” you nodded slowly, “and?”

“You can’t,” she said bluntly, baffling you further. “Ruby has dibs on him.”

You didn’t think you could get any more confused, but you’d been wrong. Josie’s words absolutely stunned you, and you found yourself absolutely speechless for a moment after she’d finished speaking. Then, you swallowed thickly, feeling the anger within you start boiling. “Did you just say Ruby has dibs?”

“Exactly,” Josie nodded, raising her chin confidently as she crossed her arms over her chest. “She’s like Gilbert since the third grade, meaning she has dibs.”

You couldn’t help yourself, the words practically slipped past your lips. “What an absolutely ridiculous thing.”

Ruby gasped, curling into Diana’s side further as her sobbing increased. Josie’s lips parted in disbelief, shaking her head. “What?”

“It’s ridiculous,” you said bluntly, shrugging your shoulders. “Gilbert is not a possession. He’s a person. And he’s allowed to hangout with who he wants, when he wants and none of you can decide otherwise.” Pausing a moment, you frowned, letting your eyes slide to Ruby’s. “I’m sorry if i’ve hurt you in anyway, but you do not own Gilbert. If I wish to spend time with him, then I very well can.”

All of the girls stared at you stunned, all while you stared back.

Then, a moment later, you bowed slightly, before taking a step forward. “Good day.”

You walked past them, without even batting any of them another eyelash. And as you continued to walk, Gilbert joined you, slightly out of breath trying to catch up with you. “What did they want?” He asked, his breath fogging before him because of the cold.

You came to a stop, turning to the boy before slyly glancing back the girls way. Josie was still glaring at you, while the other girls were trying to comfort Ruby. You felt slightly bad having hurt her feelings, but you didn’t regret your words one bit.

“Nothing,” you shrugged, turning back to Gilbert. “Just telling me that I can’t spend time with you anymore.”

    Gilbert frowned, “oh… and?”

And,” you continued, “I told them they were being ridiculous. As long as you enjoy my presence, I will continue to spend as much time with you as I please.”

Your words seemingly pleased Gilbert, a huge grin falling on his lips as his eyes practically lit up with glee. “Well then,” he smirked, moving to hold his arm out for you. “Would you like me to walk you home?”

With a smile of your own, you nodded; “why, of course.”

    “U-Um, Y/N?”

You rose a brow, tucking a strand of lose hair behind your ear as you turned, your eyes widening with surprise at the sight of Gilbert standing before you. He seemed uncharacteristically nervous, given that any time you’d seen him talk during class, he’d practically oozed confidence.

Still, you let a gentle smile caress your lips, letting your hand fall by your side. “Hello, Gilbert. Is there something you needed?”

    “W-Well, I… uh, I-”

Your lips parted, eyes narrowing in confusion as you watched Gilbert stumbled along his words, clearly still trying to find them. This was definitely odd.

You may not know Gilbert all that wall, given that the two of you had never really had a conversation with one another, but you knew something was definitely up. He seemed quite close with Anne, the new girl, and any time you’d seen the two of them talking, he hadn’t ever acted this way around her. Not to mention, that Gilbert was the most popular kid in school, and frankly, the only boy the girls liked, whether they admitted it or not for Ruby’s sake.

You hardly imagine him barely being able to mutter a sentence had all the girls swooning after him.

“Yes?” You prompted, leaning forward slightly with another raised brow. It was then, as you leaned forward for closer inspection, that you notice the slight redness of his cheeks. It puzzled you even further.

Gilbert only continued to stammer over his words, before eventually giving up with a huff and raising his head to scratch the back of his head sheepishly.

You bit your lip, to try and stop yourself from giggling - it was quite the sight to see if you were being honest. Raising your hand, you placed it over your mouth, unable to stop the chuckles that left your lips as Gilbert’s cheeks grew even more red.

“I’m sorry,” you apologized, shaking your head as an attempt to stop smiling. “I shouldn’t laugh.”

“No, no,” Gilbert shook his head, “it’s okay. Me stuttering like a fool is humorous,” Gilbert laughed himself, and you couldn’t help but join him.

Letting your laughter die, you smiled up at Gilbert; “would you like to try again?”

With a grin, and a little more confidence, Gilbert nodded, “I just wanted to ask if you’d like to spend lunch with me?” Surprise flooded you as Gilbert reached into his bag, “I have apples.”

The comment made you laugh, given how odd it was. You glanced back into the classroom, meeting the eyes of your friends who were watching you. If you were being frank, you didn’t really love spending lunch with them. The only one you managed to get a decent conversation out of is Anne, but she wasn’t at school today.

“Sure,” you agreed, turning to Gilbert with a bright. “I’d love to.”

    Gilbert practically beamed; “great!”

He extended his arm out towards you teasingly, and with another giggle, you accepted it, looping your own arm through before following him outside.

    -

You were more than happy for Mary. She’d finally gotten everything she deserved, and you knew, though she may never say it out loud, was more than pleased to leave the Bog.

It had been weird at first. You were like a daughter to Mary, so when she’d gotten married to Bash and moved into Avonlea, you followed her. While Bash, and the boy who lived with him, Gilbert, hadn’t minded the extra person, it was odd. You were like a family of sorts, but not, at the same time.

It took some getting use to.

But after the wedding, you’d grown to enjoy living in Avonlea. Even love it.

The boy, Gilbert, was kinder than you could’ve ever expected. You found you were able to be yourself without judgement when around him. The two of you had a lot in common, and there was never a dull moment when you were with him. He treated you like a friend, and even helped you become accustomed to school. Something you’d never had to go to before.

Plus, it was always a blessing to see Mary so happy.

Not to mention, Bash was sweet. He always made you laugh, and had even become like a father figure to you, just like Mary had become a mother figure to you. He truly was the perfect man for Mary. Or at least, you thought so.

Your favourite moments were spent at home, with your family

A giggle left your lips, allowing Gilbert to spin you around as you hummed joyously. A grin was plastered on Gilbert’s lips as he looked down at you fondly, his eyes following your movements as your hair waved behind you, and the skirt of your dress twirled.

Bash and Mary were out on a walk, and you’d been baking when Gilbert had decided to join you. He wasn’t very good, but you appreciated the company. Plus, it was always fun messing around. When around Gilbert, you didn’t feel like you had to proper. You felt like you could laugh, joke around, do whatever basically and he would just watch on with that look of his.

Like now, as he twirled you round and round.

“Okay,” you laughed, slowing. You came to a stop before the boy, stumbling over your feet slightly as the room spun before you. You continued to laugh, not caring about the mess in the kitchen, or the floor that stuck to your cheeks and hair.

You blinked slowly up at Gilbert, too busy trying to catch your bearings to notice the look in his eyes.

Gilbert found himself lost in his mind, his eyes stuck on that of his lips. He’d long ago accepted the feelings he’d grown for you, but in that moment, with your hair a wild mess around your head, your cheeks flush slightly and your eyes shining with delight, you’d never looked more beautiful to him, Your lips looked tempting, too tempting to pass up in the moment. Curled up into a bright smile, teeth showing as you laughed softly.

And then, suddenly Gilbert couldn’t help himself.

He leaned forward, pressing his lips as your own. You gasped, hands falling on his chest as you froze in surprise. Then, you felt your body ease, your shoulders fall and you leaned back, returning the kiss.

Your eyes fell shut, and you felt Gilbert’s hands slip from your own to wrap around your waist, pulling you closer.

You pulled away a moment later, out of breath. With flushed cheeks, you shyly glanced up, meeting Gilbert’s eyes. “What was that for?” You breathed, panting slightly.

“It…” Gilbert paused, eyes searching your own. “It seemed like the right thing to do.”

His words elicited a soft giggle from you. With a shake of your head, you glanced down, “well,” you smiled, “you aren’t wrong.”

    “No?”

Meeting his eyes, you shook your head. “I’ve been waiting for you to do that for a long time, Gilbert.”

“I’m glad I did it then,” he smirked, eyes crinkling in delight.

    You couldn’t help but agree.

    “It’s not your fault, Gilbert.”

Said boy sighed, shoulders dropping, as if a heavy weight had fallen upon them. You looked up at him through your eyelashes, lips curled down into a deep frown upon the own on his face.

You hated that he was blaming himself. Especially because he was never suppose to know about the reality of your circumstances in the first place.

But it seemed you hadn’t done a good enough job of covering your new bruises like you thought you had and Gilbert had seen a hint of it peeking out through the sleeve of your dress. He’d seen it during class, but hadn’t wanted to make a scene of it, so chose to talk to you about it during your walk home. It had stunned you to say the least, and no matter how hard you tried to deny it, the one bruise prompted him to find a few of the others.

After that, there had been no convincing him otherwise.

    “I just don’t understand how I couldn’t have known.”

Grasping Gilbert’s left hand in your own, you squeezed it reassuringly. “You didn’t know because I didn’t tell you,” you reminded, hoping to soothe his guilt. “It’s no one’s fault but mine. Do not blame yourself.”

Gilbert opened his lips to argue, then paused. Squeezing your own hand back in return, Gilbert eyes found yours, and with a new found determination, he asked; “if I hadn’t seen the bruise, how long would you have kept it a secret from me?”

The question stunned you. It was an obvious enough one, but you had hoped he wouldn’t ask it. Biting your lip, you dipped your head down, looking at your feet.

    “Y/N…”

You only shook your head, blinking back the tears that threatened to grow.

Taking a step forward, Gilbert slipped his hand from your own, using it to clasp your chin and pull your eyes back on his. “Why?” He asked, voice soft with disappointment but mainly worry. “Why did you hide this from me?”

“If my father ever found out I told someone, he’d kill me. I’m sure of it.”

Gilbert’s eyes widened, “it’s that bad?”

You regretted your words instantly. For a moment, you pondered on whether you should try and backtrack or not. See if you could alter your story a little bit, but given the way Gilbert was looking at you, you knew that wasn’t possible. So, with a heavy sigh, you nodded. “He’s nearly killed me a few times.”

Realization dawned; “so those days you missed school…”

    You nodded.

“That’s it,” Gilbert suddenly declared, without a moments hesitation. “You’re not staying with him anymore.”

Your eyes practically bulged out of your head. “What?” You exclaimed, “Gilbert, have you lost your very mind? He’s my father, not to mention, where else am I going to stay? I don’t have any relatives that’ll take me in, and I obviously don’t have the money…”

    “You’ll stay with me.”

His words surprised you so much so that you suddenly found yourself rooted where you stood. “What…?”

“It’s the perfect place. Besides, Bash and Mary love you.”

    “But… my fath-”

“We will deal with that when it comes,” Gilbert assured, swiping a thumb across your cheek. With pleading eyes, he met your own. “If you stay with me, then I know you’ll be safe.”

You hesitated, unsure. The opportunity certainly was better than your current living conditions, but the reaction of your father scared you deathly. Though, when you met Gilbert’s eyes, you knew you couldn’t say no.

“Okay,” you nodded, leaning into his embrace. “i just have to grab a few things. Before my father get’s home.”

    “I’ll accompany you.”

You walked along the ridge of the small fountain, your arms outstretched by your sides with a wide smile. Your eyes twinkled with delight, the corners of your lips practically reaching your eyes as you giggled and hummed the tune of your favourite song. You placed one foot in front of the other, not a care in the world as the sun beamed down on your back and eyes watched you carefully.

Gilbert stood beside you, trailing along your path only on the ground next to the ridge. It was just the two of you in this majestic place he’d found, and like the clubhouse was Anne’s secret area, this was his.

Of course, no one else but you knew about it. So it wasn’t so much his area, as it was yours and his.

Gilbert eyes followed your movements with mesmerization. You never failed to amuse him, and everything you did had him falling just a tad bit more in love with you each time. Of course, you were blissfully unaware. Even now, as Gilbert stared at you with soft, loving eyes, you were too much in your own mind to truly take notice.

But he didn’t mind. These were his favourite moments. When you were being yourself, and he could watch on without interruption.

You paused in your singing every once in awhile, to share a conversation with said boy. At that point, he would refocus his gaze on your own, intent on placing on his focus on you so that you never felt shunned.

It was in that exact moment that you did that. With your humming trailing, you turned your head, eyes crinkling when you met Gilbert’s own. Your arms remained outstretched by your sides, a laugh leaving your lips as the sound of water rushing filled your ears.

“I cannot thank you enough for showing me this wonderful place, Gilbert,” you gushed, hands clasping against one another in excitement. “It is absolutely marvelous.”

Gilbert grinned in return, tilting his head ever so slightly in response. “There’s no one i’d rather share it w-”

His words were cut off by the sound of your shrieking. His eyes widened considerably, gazing snapping over to the right where he saw you slip on one of the slacks of pavement, your body heading straight for the water. Gilbert didn’t waste a second, dropping everything he rushed towards you, managing to catch you just in time.

His arms wrapped around your waist with a certain air of care, and Gilbert gently guided you back to your feet, now stood before him. You braced yourself, grasping onto Gilbert’s shoulders, panting with wide, slightly dazed eyes.

Your gaze was settled on where you’d slipped, before settling back on Gilbert’s reassuring, but frazzled gaze. “Thank you,” you whispered, slightly out of breath.

Placing a hand against your cheek and cupping it gently, Gilbert searched your face for any signs of injury. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” you breathed, nodding slowly. “Just slipped.”

It was nothing Gilbert wasn’t use to. You were quite clumsy, and he often found himself rushing to catch you before you actually fell and hurt yourself. But it never failed to give him a tiny (but really, not so tiny) scare each time.

“How about you walk beside me?” Gilbert offered, lips curling into a gentle, somewhat teasing smile.

Sliding your hand in Gilbert’s own, you nodded. “Yeah,” you mumbled, “yeah, that sounds good.”
