(1 of 4) “Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by past artists; particularly Michelangelo Caravaggio for the three-dimensionality of his subjects and his care for details. It was immediately clear to me that in order to get such results, the first thing I must do was to learn to draw well.At Art School, teachers directed me to more “expressive” styles that were fashionable at the time, like abstractionism and impressionism, but I did not feel any real interest. For me, it was simple schoolwork. The main challenge of hyperrealism is that you have to be precise; that’s what I like. Even Caravaggio was meticulous; he drew a single crumb of bread. I understand the pleasure that level of precision can give.”
