CELEBRATING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF LORI SCACCO’S LANDMARK RECORD CIRCLES
"... Like the most restful, composed moments of Talk Talk's last two albums, Circles has a healing quality that is positively magnetic."
– Andy Kellman, Allmusic
Released in 2004 on Eastern Developments Music, CIRCLES was Lori Scacco’s first solo recording following the breakup of her band Seely (of renowned UK imprint Too Pure). Originally composed for solo piano, CIRCLES was born of a desire to move beyond her delay-heavy work with the electric guitar. Through improvisation, process-based experimentation, and cut & paste compositional methods, Scacco devised ways of layering overtones and manipulating organic sound, ultimately expanding her arrangements to include Fender Rhodes, nylon-string guitar, and tuned percussion instruments. The result was a collection of vibrant instrumentals that had roots in minimalism but took on a lyrical exuberance not typically seen in the form. Here, silence was given equal time alongside deeply resonant melodies and crystalline micro-textures that seemed to materialize straight from the subconscious. Scacco deftly tapped into the inherent emotional properties of sound. Perhaps a meditation on love, on memory, on heartbreak, on exhilaration, on the unspoken. This is music that breathes.
Finding a home on EastDev among a varied roster of beat-makers, glitch experimenters, komische-fusion heads, and psychedelic explorers–all brought together by Prefuse 73 / Guillermo Scott Herren’s prescient and expansive approach to music and curation–CIRCLES was able to reach an audience that might not have encountered it otherwise. The record remains a treasured rarity that has only grown its cult following over the past 20 years, even enjoying a 10th anniversary Japanese reissue in 2014. Scacco has gone on to create acclaimed albums and scores for choreography, film, and gallery/museum presentations, and her palette has evolved with a focus on electronics and the synthesizer–but CIRCLES is where it all began.

I know pundits like to throw around terms like 'breathtaking' and 'transcendent' with all the restraint of a toddler with a can of silly string, but d*mn if I can think of a more fitting set of adjectives.
Don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this. Pharaoh is the type of virtuoso that doesn't need to blow you out with tech to leave you speechless. Got me feeling emotions n sh*t. Ghuughra
