genuinely i think everyone would be so much happier if we simply accepted that fanfiction isn’t supposed to be realistic at all, it’s just supposed to make you happy. these freaks are currently 20k words into pining for each other while living under the same roof and working the same job, fuck realism tbh

🤔 (are there any new characters you want to write about) and ✨(what's one area of your writing that you think needs the least amount of improvement) for the writing ask game! (from lady-redshield-writes)

Mm. MMMMM. Torn, so you’re getting both. First things first, Elliot. Beloved demon of mine, the character I named myself after, beautiful annoying Elliot. I’ve been affectionately describing him as “three twigs in a miniskirt”. He’s Cadoc’s godson. His great-something-or-other uncle is Taegan, Cadoc’s onagain offagain ex over the centuries, and Taegan was under the impression he had no family, so Cadoc stepped in when Elliot was a baby. He grows up to be an incredible and passionate cook, and is, admittedly, very vain. He loves fashion and I dread having to learn anything about it to be able to describe him the way he demands I must. He’s the only character I’ve ever made who told me feature by feature what his face looks like; I genuinely struggle to picture my characters properly. Like I said, he’s a bit vain. In the spirit of continuing to bully him, I’ll say that I specialize in writing characters who are incredibly intelligent and yet also… make the most ridiculous decisions possible. I sound harsh while talking about him, I can and will slut shame the man (he demands so many smut scenes, chill dude), but know I love him. While his story ideally will be set at least 20 years after the events of the main PD trilogy, I’m enjoying knowing I’ll have the opportunity to write a romcom esque novel. I’m developing a habit of writing A Story, and then using the sandbox i made out of that worldbuilding to play with completely different genres in said sandbox.

Although, speaking of characters who are incredibly intelligent and yet make stupid decisions, the other character I’ve been really excited about lately is Kane. Kane is Amara and Cin’s kid, (PDverse side characters, if you don’t remember them), and I was so determined that he have a demonic form that I changed my own world building, giving Cin and Tu (the hybrid brothers) demonic forms. Kane just had to be able to turn into a dog, okay? for me. He’s the embodiment of a boy with ADHD, he’s a theater kid, he was valedictorian, and he did cross country. He was a whirlwind in high school, graduated, and went “nah im good” and just. does community theater now. He probably won’t even have a book. I just love him as a concept and know he exists. Lookit that guy. He’s so weird. He is absoloutely exactly the kind of kid a mostly reformed cannibal whose personality is “traumatized golden retriever” once he’s gone through his character arc and an impulsive and often dramatic loose canon would have together. His name is pun about how his original concept was “how many kinks can i fit in a character before it seems like overkill?”. I could keep going, but i have a second question to answer LMFAO

~~

When i saw this ask originally I had something in mind, bit that was a while ago and I have since forgot, SO. Hm. The thing is. I am a relatively confident writer, and I have a lot of things I think I do extremely well. I think, however, the thing I need the least amount of work on would be my back and forth dialogue. I think I mentioned this in another ask I just answered earlier this evening, but my writing journey started in literate role play, so a lot of my early writing was literally just that: back and forth with another character. It really helped me hone a lot of skills, but especially that one, early in my writing journey before I was thinking too hard about skills at all. I was just having fun, and i truly wish i still had that skill of turning of the critic in my head when i’m trying something new! middle school me didn’t know what he had when he had it haha. But yeah! I don’t even want to limit it to banter, i think I tend to just write realistic dialogue that pulls you along quite nicely :D

Hey guess who needs to make a vague timeline

I have. no memory of this ask. possibly you. but clearly me

Hi parchment

It's a day with the possibility of answering asks! How conscious are you of your side characters and their effect on the plot or arcs of your main characters? What is your usual goal for that effect - how (much) do you want them to affect the story? (Once again, hope this is coherent)

Side characters, my beloveds. So, i must first confess I write sprawling casts. My writing journey started in group literate role plays, and so one of the skills I picked up was juggling multiple storylines at once. However. I never learned how to keep a small cast. I’m very used to characters always having a foil and pairs tend to add up fast. Add on top of that the fact my group role plays usually ended up dwindling to one or two other people, and I got used to learning how to weave in new threads and leave others hanging if there wasnt a pressing need to fold em in so I had something to work with later if i needed to backtrack. I’ve also recently discovered my distaste for random characters with no name, and suddenly we all understand how my casts somehow become sprawling and tightly knit at the same time. This person is connected to this person who is connected to this person who is connected to this person until I look like I’m building a conspiracy board. I joke about this quite often. In PD I like to play seven degrees of separation from Amara. its probably a lot less than seven degrees LMFAO. If a character shows up more than once and gets a name they’ll probably be popping back in or having their own lives in the background. This makes it easy to amuse myself with spinoffs. I may never write most of them, but knowing they’re there and I could and I know enough that they feel fleshed out helps the world feel robust in my opinion. You know even with the original story, shits still going on in the background, not just dragged along with the main plot. :D but also I just like making characters and setting them up in little lives. It’s a problem I tell you.

There was a knock on the door, cutting her off. Cadoc was on his feet before she could even blink, a small black blade in hand. When he opened the door, it was just Barry, holding two pizza boxes and a two liter of soda. “Delivery?” Barry tried with a smile.

Aalis could tell Cadoc was considering shutting the door in his face, but he just took the food and walked over to the dresser, setting the pizzas up. The bag with the two liter had napkins, but no plates, or cups, so Cadoc pointed to Monday silently, and then left.

characters whose eyes change color due to some event in the course of their story. magical trauma? deal with the devil? moral corruption? fucked up a spell that one time and now their left eye is permanently baby blue? just… let their eyes change color!

if I ever strike gold and end up writing a popular book series i’d love to keep an eye on the fandom to determine the smallest crackship and make that the only one that goes canon
