MMORPG players in Westworld: people torture the NPCs because they’re not real and nothing matters

Real MMORPG players in real games: for a while there was a rock with textures that didn’t load in correctly so people made a pilgrimage to Smooth Rock

themintywitch I play a popular mmo and one of the most well known and truly well loved players died in a motorcycle accident, and the devs of the game just. Put his whole character model in one of the zones he was most active in and made him a kinds tutorial guide to talk about tanking and how to be a tank and what it means to be a Tank ™ and uplift others and be good. I make a pilgrimage every year on the anniversary of his death to see him and run dragons in that zone <3ALT

Currently in Critically Acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, there is a bug that spawns, for no apparent reason, a level 1 nameless Antelope Doe enemy in a zone from 4 expansions ago. It does nothing, it has approximately no health, drops nothing, etc.

The vast majority of the playerbase makes regular pilgrimage to go stare at it. There is fanart. There is poetry. One of the main things to do while waiting for a party to fill is just to go hang out with the . There was a hotfix the night before last and people were actively *begging* the development team to leave this beast in the game as long as possible.

It is still there as of today.

Also that time the helldivers players saved a fictional childrens hospital over getting the weapon unlock they’d wanted. There were no rewards for it either. They just refused to let fictional sick kids die if they could help it

It isn’t a “tell” if someone responds to ‘absolute freedom from consequences’ by indulging in cruel behavior. But it is a tell when someone imagines that people in such situations would only and always indulge in cruel behavior. Like how a thief suspects everyone else in the world is a thief.

So in the Fallout 4 Nuka-World expansion, if you go way to one corner of the map, you’ll find a guy named Evan living in a trailer. He gives you the recipe book for a special item called Nuka-Love.

But there’s a story behind Evan.

Evan was a real person.

He and his brother lost their father, and Bethesda intended to send them a merch package after finding out they’d created their dad as a robot in-game as a way to cope and still have a face to talk to while they processed.

And then Evan died, only a few months after their dad.

In response, Bethesda made Evan an NPC in-game, just as the brothers had made their dad. He carries a vital quest item; he can’t be killed; and he’s easily the kindest character in the game.

But that’s not the “RPG players are great” part. That’s just the background so you can understand the “RPG players are great” part.

Fallout has an extremely active modding community, for everything from bug fixes to changing the ending to putting absolute Gainax tits on robots, because of course they do. Absolutely nothing is sacred–

–except Evan.

There is only one mod in public existence that was designed explicitly around Evan, and it allows you to make him a settler and give him a community.

In ten years, nobody has decided it’d be funny to turn him into a girl, or delete him from the game, or make it possible to kill him.

In a small corner of Nuka-World, Evan is still playing the game. And we’re all playing with him.

In the future, children will think our ways are strange. “Why do old people always grow so much milkweed in their gardens?” they’ll say. “Why do old people always write down when the first bees and butterflies show up? Why do old people hate lawn grass so much? Why do old people like to sit outside and watch bees?”

We will try to explain to them that when we were young, most people’s yards were almost entirely short grass with barely any flowers at all, and it was so commonplace to spray poisons to kill insects and weeds that it was feared monarch butterflies and American bumblebees would soon go extinct. We will show them pictures of sidewalks, shops, and houses surrounded by empty grass without any flowers or vegetables and they will stare at them like we stared at pictures of grimy children working in coal mines

We will be feeding our grandchildren strawberries and raspberries we grew in our gardens, dragging them along to the farmers’ markets for tomatoes and eggs and goats milk and pickles and pecans and salsa and sunflower seed butter and jars of honey, as they complain and drag their feet because Gramma always stands around talking to people for like an HOUR

and we will say “When I was YOUR age, fruits and vegetables came from a supermarket and they were bred to get shipped 1000 miles in a truck and sit on shelves for weeks, and they tasted so sour and watery it was like eating paper compared to these ones. It wasn’t even legal in some places to grow your own food”

and they will roll their eyes like yeah yeah just because everything was miserable in the 20s doesn’t mean I have to have a smile on my face standing in the hot sun while you listen to that one guy talk about his bees FOREVER

But they will go, because there might be baby goats.

Since I made this post, dozens and dozens of people have left tags telling me that it was the first thing today that made them want to continue living, that it was the first thing that made them consider that they might be okay years in the future, that they might grow old, that it was the first and only post of its kind they’d ever seen—the first post that boldly predicts a future where we make it.

And many other people have been just spitting, foaming at the mouth fucking FURIOUS. How dare I have the audacity to imagine a future where things get better?

Don’t I know how BAD things are? Am I not aware of the TERROR and DEVASTATION of climate change and fascism and biodiversity loss? How dare someone be so bold, so callous, as to imagine something other than misery and suicide. How dare someone suggest it will get better. How dare a person propose that there is a future where we will be okay, in the face of so much terror. Hasn’t she seen the abyss opening its jaws before us?

Well? What do you think?

Do you think I’ve seen the abyss?

the idea that there is hope for the future is the only way we have this kind of future.

there were kids who stayed inside because of the black plague and went on to help cure it.

there were women who sat at home and cleaned the house and dreamt up a world where they could vote and have jobs.

there were kids in the mines who thought up a life outside of it.

there were children who hid in annexes and wrote a diary where they prayed for a future without a terrible man in control

there were slaves who wanted freedom so badly and had hope that it would get better

there were gay people who hid in the corners of clubs and fought back for a future where they could walk down the street together

do you know what all of that has in common? they had hope that things would get better and they made that change. they looked at the world in its cruel ways and fought back.

so now, there are kids and teenagers and young adults and new adults who dream of a world so beautiful and the only amazon their grandchildren know is the rainforest

and it is in everything we do that we find this hope. wishing on dandelions, counting the stars, making our own clothes out of crochet or knit or sewing it, watching the sunset, going to the farmer’s market, feeding the birds, planting seeds.

step by step, we dream up, like our ancestors before us, a beautiful world

THE ONLY AMAZON OUR GRANDCHILDREN WILL KNOW IS THE RAINFOREST

You can have hope and fight. In fact, it’s the only way we will possibly succeed.

Also almost every country has laws restricting or outright banning disabled people from immigrating. They explicitly state we’re “burdens” they don’t want to shoulder. When everyone was joking abkut moving to Canada I had to sit there knowing I am trapped in a place that wants me dead (trans and queer) and no country will help me because they’d rather I die then burden them with my care.

“Immigrats who can contribute” is phrased to exclude disabled people :/ if we dont contribute by being smart or whatever the fuck we aren’t worth helping.

please stop treating the word neurodivergent like it means the overlap between autism and adhd

i dont know how to articulate this well but some of you act like neurodiversity starts with adhd and ends with autism. you talk about “the neurodivergent experience” and everytime you mean “the overlapping experience of adhd and autism.”

please remember us when talking about neurodiversity. ocd, dyslexia, dyscaculia, personality disorders, tourettes, intellectual disabilities, schizo-spec disorders, etc. all fall under neurodiversity.

please stop saying neurodivergent when you mean “autism and adhd.”

this post is okay to reblog but do not clown on it

In timeline beta are Kurtis and Deedee brought up to speed? If so, how’s that conversation go?

Unless that’s top secret

I don’t think they are brought completely up to speed. I don’t think they necessarily want to know.

…However, Kurtis has found a blue ghostly figure in his sheep pin and some things did have to get explained.
