fun fact one of the world champions in pepper-eating contests is a trans woman and she actually faced significant backlash because people somehow thought she had a biological advantage. to eating spicy pepper

update bc i went back and checked: her name is brianna “the chilli queen” skinner and she set a record in 2017 by slamming back 23 carolina reapers consecutively. she only stopped when told to by the referees, and the next year she stepped down out of boredom. queen

Here's a picture of her, by the way

The championship, it should be noted, is unisex. Apparently being a trans woman gives you an innate biological advantage over both cis men and cis women.

The innate biological advantage of being cool as fuck

You all need to hear this:

1. You probably dont suck at your craft as much as you think you do, I bet a lot of people are amazed at what you can make, and

2. If you actually are the Literal Worst In The Whole Wide World at your craft... who the fuck cares? What are they gonna do, call the police on you? Keep making your shitty little things, youre the boss of you, fuck the haters.

THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN

I’VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS FOR SEVEN YEARS

His middle name is Mildred. He told his fans to spit in his mouth. He’s 24 years old. He and his costar got matching tattoos that say “sex sells” from his girlfriend?. He’s Canadian. He doesn’t know how to wrap Christmas presents. He doesn’t know what a pet name is. He just discovered mpreg. Everyone has seen his ass. His back arch went viral on twitter. He has 700 skincare products and they’re all about to run out. He multi-texts. He IS media trained he just doesn’t care. He threatened to kill his supporting cast for more screentime. He thinks cologne and perfume should be discovered and not announced. He wants to be a role model for the next asian kid that wants to get railed (#stopasianhate). He’s a side character in a hallmark movie. His parents are divorced. He used to be a waiter at a spaghetti restaurant. He got his haircut by the same guy since he was 17. His character is always on the verge of tears. He is still actively putting short films on his youtube. He did mma. He might be the funniest person alive. He hates pineapple on pizza. I didn’t say his name but he popped into your head didn’t he

I've seen criticism of Heated Rivalry (both the book and tv show) for not showing enough of the rivalry between Ilya and Shane, especially since we get right to the heat.

I'd argue that it's not inconsistent or shallow writing, but an intentionally written conflict between how others perceive and talk about them vs how they actually are with each other.

When we see the media or the league play up the rivalry there's always a moment to counter it. The CCM commercial shoot tries to pose them in a stare down, but they break out laughing. The league tries pit them against each other at the all-star game and puts them in front of the press, but we get an endearing moment of Shane helping Ilya out with his language barrier. Even when they're competing against each for the first time in 2008, Shane takes the initiative to introduce himself outside the arena away from everyone else, despite the Canada vs Russia commentator starting to create the rivalry narrative.

Their friends and family also reinforce how much they hate each other and, in response, they cover up what they're actually feeling or experiencing. Hayden says "Shane hates Rozanov" just before we see Shane be happy for Rozanov's cup win.

Those around them also miss the fact that when they are competitive with each other, its not out of hate or anger, but joy and love. There is a mutual respect and understanding between them when it comes to winning and competing and they genuinely love playing against each other. It's not until they are on the outs in episode 4, that their performance goes down.

So, yes, they are not actually bitter rivals, despite their world claiming otherwise. That's the point.

Thinking about Hudson Williams saying that Shane thinks he’s better at masking how he feels than he actually is and the way that Shane’s queerness shines through under his facade… the way he is actually not very good at playing straight and when people ask him about women he just tries to ignore it and deflect… the way his entire life is built around a lie and it’s not even one he’s very good at holding up but he doesn’t have to be good at it because nobody is even assuming he’s gay because he’s a hockey player how could he be gay. If anyone was paying attention they would figure it out but until rose nobody does. His parents suspect but don’t ask. He doesn’t even have to outright lie he’s just so isolated by the fact that nobody wants to look too close for fear of seeing him.

And obviously part of this is that Ilya clocks him immediately. And I think that’s part of what scares him about Ilya, he can’t hide from him. Ilya is not looking away and not only can he tell that Shane is gay he works out very quickly exactly what Shane wants. Finally someone is seeing him but it’s the person who could ruin his career and his reputation the fastest. And yet he trusts him because god what other choice does he have! Only one person in the world really sees him and doesn’t look away!

I am fully ready to testify in court that Ilya is not actually particularly dominant. He’s just a service top whose long-term sexual partner happened to be thoroughly submissive and he cares more about pleasing than what role he’s in. But those of us who are enlightened can see submissive top Ilya gets his turn in ep. 4 for a brief moment. He’s in there and ready for those rare occasions Shane is so overcome with lust he accidentally takes the wheel.
