Anonymous asked:

hi ominous sign blog! just wanted to let you know that the post you reblogged about the discord bots is sort of misinformation; the op has denounced the post after people explained things. the bots aren't hiding in servers or anything! you can ban just about anyone/anything, even bots that aren't in your discord server already. the bots do exist, and they can be banned, but they're not automatically added to and hidden inside of every server.

ominous-signs answered:

Hi I had the other two people who sent asks about this, thank you guys for letting me know. Replying to this one specifically since it gives an explanation

Still happy I banned those bots anyways despite the information being wrong, but my reblog has now been deleted

Also another anon sent what op had to say abt that post

The hoaxer used AI to perpetrate the hoax, and the investigator used AI to detect & unravel it. What a fucking world we live in.

Keep in mind one reason this was so successful: Door Dash was already caught stealing tips from drivers. The best fakes are rooted in truth, and it's easy to believe the stuff in the original post.

The hoaxer's undoing was (ironically) using more AI after their first AI enhanced post, to quickly fabricate an additional 18-page "internal memo" packed with over-the-top slop, which triggered the investigator's skepticism. In pre-chatGPT days such a feat would have been impossible.

UghhhhhhhhUbereatsaiI admit I fell for it tooGlad someone debunked itPostbusters

The one case where he's not wasting them people's time.

charlesoberonn

Okay I don't know where you got that idea from but I found the original episode on YouTube and he has no twin brother nor claimed the kids were his brother's.

He really was wasting them people's time.

(and he's also an asshat who verbally abused the kids and their mom)

PostbustersWell shit I feel bad for spreading that without researching firstThanks for correcting it!

the “morbin time” tweet gets its dues for tricking Sony into making a movie bomb twice but we don’t talk about how there is a billion dollar cost franchise of films in theaters right now that only exists because James Cameron saw this tweet and got really really mad

maxattax

Hey so the tweet is funny but James Cameron didn’t actually see it and decide to make more movies because of it. The source is this tweet, which was tweeted by a journalist who works for ClickHole, aka a satire site.

"First Edition" for classical texts doesn't usually refer to the autograph (i.e. "self-written" not "signed") manuscript by the author, which we generally don't have for anything before the byzantine period. And due to the nature of book production in Ancient Greek the autograph isn't usually what matters anyway, many texts were dictated to scribes so the real term of interest would be "exemplar" in that case (also lost in the case of homer if they ever existed to begin with)

But rare book collectors often use the English term "First Edition" to refer to the editio princeps, the first printed edition of the text, made in the 15th century. And of course in that case it's obviously not signed by Homer but by the editor who prepared the text, which in this case would be the Byzantine scholar Demetrius Chalcondylas. A copy of the first edition of Homer published by him sold for 150 grand at auction in 2012, about three years before this movie came out.
