Sand Castle

Sand Castle is a collaborative storytelling game of building and learning about an imaginary sand castle that itself represents another fantastical location.

It tells of a make believe fortress that’s informed by the whimsy of playing pretend over the cold harsh reality of actual castles. The tides will inevitably sweep your castle away, and bring it to ruin. Much like a real sand castle, the meaning is not in attempted immortalization but in the play of building something that will only last for a moment.

This is a combination of tile laying board game and prompt card based tabletop role-playing game design.

Built for 2 to 6 players to play for an hour or more.

The game can be played using a custom 108 card deck, or a standard deck of 52 playing cards. You can play the game by placing the cards themselves to form a map, or by playing the cards into a discard pile and then drawing a map based on them. It's also possible to play by writing a shared set of notes or even in theatre of the mind.

Had a lovely time playing this at TTRPG night! We took a clear plastic container to make the second level of our underwater mermaid castle, we were so enamored with our game. It's a wonderfully designed game that works with little prep and a short amount of playtime.

Sand Castles does an incredible amount with how small it is! All you do to create a place, whatever you "castle" may be, draw cards, place them down and answer the questions. And the questions are as simple as "what's beautiful here?" but it goes so far. I love that places, like Kitchen, show up several times with different questions, or even more broad places + questions can be placed around multiple times. And you start to create a vague layout by placing cards down, it's not a perfect map but it's exactly what you need.

Really beautiful, and will definitely go back to it when I need to create a "building" with others. Take your map/city-making games (like Street Magic or Beak, Feather, and Bone) and zoom into one location with Sand Castles. Brilliant!
