Unfortunately black people being abandoned by medical staff is nothing new:

Black women are 3-4 times as likely than white women to die in pregnancy and childbirth. Black women are also twice as likely to develop diabetes and preeclampsia, 40% more likely to die from breast cancer, 40% more likely to develop and 75% more likely to die from cervical cancer, 20% more likely to be pushed into a C-section and overall receive nearly 30% less anesthesia and pain control than white women.

It is just sort of common knowledge that hospitals are to black women as police are to black men. Except police do target and kill black women, and hospitals do neglect and dismiss black men, as well.

You should look up the Tuskegee Syphilis Study sometime. You'll see that this is hardly the first time a country's government has deliberately played eugenics with black men's health.

also historically a lot of post mortem anatomical studies and cadavers used in educating surgical students were retrieved without consent from the graves of black women (and men)

this is a fairly popular image one youve probably seen before the meticulous dissection and staging of the entire human nervous system by dr rufus weaver

but not a lot of people know who that person was before she had this happen to her and manh who do believe this myth that she graciously volunteered her body to the hospital for study

the truth is a lot muddier and harder to say for certain but her name was harriet cole who died of tuberculosis at 35 and who was exhumed without her consent and sent to rufus weaver without her consent and had her body experimented on without prior consent and now hangs preserved in a display case in drexler college still to this day 137 years later without her consent and for many years her name and race and gender were completely anonymised until fairly recently

and theres a lot of reasons to think this one of which being they officially recorded that she had a burial however rufus' experiments started VERY shortly after her death which is odd as bodies donated to science often do not first have a burial second the only reason anyone believes she voluntarily donated her body is because rufus himself had said she had no other documentation exists to suggest such an event happened there were reports pf grave robbing of black peoples graves within weeks of when her body is believed to have been donated and lastly because it was an INCREDIBLY common practice

The linked BBC article is the source of this. The “it” is the UK’s National Screening Committee that is informing government policy on cancer screenings.

I have a similar story! I'm a transgender man with MRKH--an intersex variation that causes a congenital hysterectomy, but it can also affect the development of other organs such as the heart, spine, auditory nerves, and kidneys. For me, I'm deaf and missing a kidney alongside the initial reproductive difference.

A few years ago when I was struggling with awful urogenital infections (UTIs, etc) with no discernible cause, I needed to see an intersex specialist hundreds of miles away after a regular physician had tried her best for months to help me.

The day prior to my appointment, a nurse from the clinic called me saying that she needed the company phone number for my insurance plan, and after quickly realizing that most people with MRKH are cisgender women, I asked her, "Is insurance attempting to deny coverage because my AGAB documentation now reads as M instead of F?".

And I was right.

I ended up not needing any specific testing, and my issues were thankfully resolved, but insurance codes (and healthcare in general) being exclusionary based on AGAB is extremely harmful!

As one example of what could be done instead, anatomy inventories can be much more effective for medical diagnosis, treatment, and support. (This specific one is not as intersex-inclusive as it could be, but it's a better direction than assumptions based on perceived or documented AGAB).

Hi, I think youre missing some context. I’m talking about how its very difficult for trans men, and people of marginalized genders who are not women, to feel like we have a place in feminist discussions because so much of the language and theory is by and for cis women. trans men and mascs are equally if not more vulnerable to attacks on reproductive rights as cis women yet we are often not considered and many cis feminists refuse to adapt their language to include people who are not cis women.

I am a feminist. I have always been a feminist, and there have always been trans men and mascs involved in feminist theory. The feminist conversation as a whole is still ultimately dominated by a very cisheteronormative perspective, and is not kind to trans men who have a radically different experience of manhood that does not fit the popular dogma. we just end up feeling out of place and isolated. there is a place for everyone in feminism and there always has been.

Everyone can be a feminist of all genders, and they should be. However, this idea that our role in feminism is now "being an ally to women" makes my blood boil. I am a feminist, I have been for a long time. My dad is a great ally to abortion rights but I have a very different relationship with those issues because it directly impacts me and my body. Solely and exclusively defining feminism as being about womanhood pushes out people that are also gender marginalized from these spaces. Feminism involves a lot of different conversations about sex and gender marginalization and we have to make room for all of them to co-exist. Conversations about people being devalued in the workplace for their femininity can co-exist with discussions about butch marginalization. People get really tripped up with defining everything to do with gender in terms of "opposites" rather than a variance of experiences.

And like.. I do broadly agree with criticisms of how agab/asab is used. because assigned sex doesn't necessarily mean what people assume it does (in ways that are intersexist and essentialist). It's also the most socially legible way to communicate a common set of experiences that otherwise require an explanation or biographical details. I do think we need to continue to develop language to say what we mean with accuracy.

People do not talk enough about how pushing trans men and mascs out of these conversations is an intentional objective of radfems. The punishment for being a gender-traitor is that you have "chosen to opt out" of conversations about things that directly impact you. You have chosen to opt out of needing domestic violence shelters, cervical cancer screening, "maternity" leave, and so on and so on.

Ty for your addition. I was actually pretty disappointed in a lot of the notes when in my post I meant that, at every turn we are denied our own language and so we have to contort ourselves into a mold just to get our foot in the door, not that it is a good vernacular to use. "Men" are the antithesis to feminism in so many people's eyes, even putting trans in front of it doesn't help. And because they've decided our opinion is already not important, there isn't much you can do to make them understand.

Was talking to my longest friend the other day (we've known one another for nearly 40 years and have done feminist activism together in the past) and complaining about how I should probably just give in and lose the "feminist" label since I'm repeatedly told my brand of intersectional feminism isn't welcome and I should just "listen to women." (I will not do this because I am incredibly stubborn and also powered by spite)

She was completely shocked that I'd had this experience. Despite the fact that an instance of this had happened in the comments on one of her posts.

It's so frustrating.
