Well, a satisfying finale. Good job, Grandma and Jones. Grandma turned into a cat and saved everyone.

I'm also glad Kunagi survived.

Director Takashi Miike and his exclusive composer Endo Koji mostly make live-action films, so this is one of the very rare occasion where they direct anime and compose its soundtrack. I'm so grateful to watch this even though I don't think it's anywhere near masterpiece, it's still very much their film despite in different medium.

Talking about soundtrack, it's officially available now, here's the playlist, such a kickass music!

Strange show. I liked the first episode, the second was kinda fine, and then I lost interest entirely. 5/10. Oh, and ending song is great.

The Church of Cat Grandma! I couldn't have asked for a better ending.

Nyaight of the Living Cat is the only non-sequel title I picked up this season, and I had a blast with it. A good blend of silly and serious, and the characters are nice. You really do have to be a cat person to enjoy it, though. They ended in a good spot, but if a cat were in charge of Season 2, it would tease it right away like they did, then run away and hide, ignore you while you're clamoring for it, then finally come back and announce it years later once you've given up.

7/10. I'm gonna miss my weekly Nekonist propaganda.

And so we end with Grandma sacrificing herself to stop the cat attack and everyone rebuilding, then going their separate ways.

I only learned about this series' existence maybe a week or two before it started airing. At the time I thought the premise would be amazing as a one-off deconstruction of the zombie sub-genre. You know, maybe a movie or something. But I worried about how they'd manage to stretch it over an entire cour of episodes. As it turns out they had enough material to hint at wanting a season 2! Well...kinda. I still thought the first half of this focusing on the outbreak of the nyandemic was too slow and repetitious. The "cats are too cute so we can't fight back" gag was cute at first, but played out to death. That episode with the government collapsing due to it was probably the worst of the entire series. Thankfully, even though that particular bit never truly went away, things improved in the second half with the introduction of Jones. Jones was a badass. When an episode ended on his introduction I actually thought he was being set-up as the evil mastermind behind the cat uprising, instead he might end up being humanity's savior. This whole series should have been about Jones. But in the end do I think this series justified its existence? Eh, I dunno. I've definitely seen worse, but I'm not sure I'd be up for more of this unless Jones really is the true hero lol. 6/10.

EDIT: Oh, and shoutout to the OP, it was pretty nice too.

eh, for this one I'd say the MAL score is spot on, 6/10 is my judgment as well, it was a whole lot of nothing burger apart from ep1, ep11 and ep12 having actual meaningful story revelations

Excellent, both the ending episode and the series (applause)!

The open ending allows further developments of the story, asking for a most welcome second season.

Look 3 posts above yours at phantomfandom's reply, he linked the OST. It's the first track, aptly titled "Nyaight of the Living Cat Main Theme", though for some reason it doesn't include Marty Friedman's credit for playing the guitar on that theme, which I remember credited in the trailer.

Anyway, I absolutely adored this show, but I have to agree that it's pretty much only enjoyable if you're a cat lover. And even then - I found the pacing really bad. It would've been at least an 8/10 if it were shorter IMO, and the premise would've made for an EXCELLENT movie if it weren't following a much longer manga. But as it stands, it was a 7/10 for me, with some episodes more enjoyable than others. Will definitely watch a second season if it ever materialized.

I would totally go for a second season. Some parodies try too hard to be too serious or too goofy but this was just was a good balance of campy humour and silly references and cute cats.

Had a lot of fun watching it. Animation wasn't great, but really enjoyed the characters and gags. Felt the concept and cat humor was getting kind of stale around episode 2 or 3, but as the season rolled on (particularly beginning in the mall episode which was ep 6 If I recall correctly) I actually felt the humor got significantly better with the introduction of the new characters and just ridiculous scenarios like the cats mind-jacking other animals. Not sure if we'll get a season 2, but I would love to see it.

I hated the first few episodes, but I have to say by ep4 when they had left the city and were "present day" it was increasingly okay to even good. the ending is actually interesting. dare i say, i would watch a season 2.

I think at some point, if you watch this, you realise that the world lore supports the otherwise deranged behaviours of the people. For some reason, people are cat stupid in this world. like gagging for cat. something bigger is at play and while hinted at, this episode presses the point.

@Serafos And there's apparently another cat themed post apocalyptic series next season I stumbled onto on Anichart, https://myanimelist.net/anime/62496/2200-nen_Neko_no_Kuni_Nippon. Not a nyandemic, but like if we got any of the fictionalized depictions of cats that can talk, though this feels less humanoid and more anthropomorphizing, like in Red Cat Ramen, where they're incorporating into human society. 4-koma too, so it might turn out to be a short form, it's 50/50 in my limited experience, sometimes they have plenty of material, sometimes it's more condensed stories, like Nyanko Days

@Kurtadam13 A lot of it depends on how well it performs in general (merchandise, manga sales, those are both supposedly decent indicators), but also production has to have a meeting to start the next project and make sure they have it solidly decided, not overtake the source material, that sort of stuff that happened in the 90s and 200s especially

@holdingnothing Yeah, I'm definitely going to watch that show. I did some research, and apparently it's going to be a short format, like Nyanko Days, Chi's Sweet Home, Neko ni Tensei shita Ojisan, etc. Well, 1-3 min per episode is still better than nothing. :)

@Serafos Awesome! I've always tried to watch short form as much as possible, especially since probably I learned about not just Chi's Sweet Home, but many others like Bonobono from around 2016, though there are definitely some that would need a lot of time for me to catch up. Monster Strike is kind of in that vein, though I think that's also a bit of a tie in to a mobile game or CCG. It interested me, but I still need to watch Isekai Quartet's movie, which then leads to me having to ideally watch Shadow of Eminence, because it's in the movie and/or the upcoming 3rd season

I can't believe this ridiculous show actually made me emotional when Grandma was saying goodbye to everyone. Also who else noticed the blond guy doing the Chris Pratt raptor pose from Jurassic World at one point?

I agree with some others that the series improved as it went on. In the first few episodes when it was just doing the usual zombie cliches (but with cats), it was a little boring, but I kept watching because I can't resist post-apocalyptic stuff, and it got more entertaining and unpredictable as it got more absurd.

Not sure if we'll get a season 2... from what I've heard, the manga hasn't gone farther than this so there's not enough material for season 2 yet? And it seemed like not a lot of people watched it so not sure if it's popular enough for a season 2. But I would watch it. I'm hoping someday we get a happy ending where all the people who turned into cats turn back into people.

The feline purring on my lap and myself enjoyed:

• Grandma's biblical final form
• The story behind Kunagi's bell
• Purple haired duo + Jones on a sidecar

But, it's honestly rather anticlimatic how the whole zoo assault was resolved, and as I thought, the ending is an open one; will they make a second season, nya~?

The metal music, the creative and unique plot choices, the endless movie references (including the episodes' titles), and of course the loads of pretty kitties, were easily the highlights of this little, fur-tastic summer show. 🐾

Funny thing is I thought the opposite, that it got better half way through. To me something felt off about the more comedic approach of the first few episodes.

Up until a while, I had my doubts about the grandma. But that woman has been a true leader.
Absorbing flashbacks. Good that they made a decision quickly. It seems like a whole organization is behind this.
I still have some questions. Like, where's Kaoru's brother? Who was never really seen fully transformed.
It seems the next season won't start as absurdly and "slowly" as this one. In my opinion, took 3-4 episodes to get good.
Anyway. I hope they don't take so long to release the next one.
