Mangaka Motoei Shinzawa's Weekly Shonen Jump series is a classic, that's now part of the rebirth and remake into modern anime, with its 2nd adaptation since Fall 1985, coming back for another remake 4 decades later. BREIMEN feat. TOMOO's OP is a vibe, and a good one at that. Rei Ichidou and his Kimengumi Funny-Face Club consisting of him, Gou Reietsu, Kiyoshi Shusse, Jin Daima, and Dai Monohoshi, these 5 guys are quite the goofers in school with their gag humour and the like. And this certainly captures the attention of two girls: Yui Kawa and her friend Chie Uru, into finding that there're other clubs just like them - from the handsome "Iro Otoko-gumi", to the delinquent "Ban-gumi", the athletic "Ude-gumi", and even the tough girl squad "Onna-gumi" with ther eccentric leaders and members. Most certainly, Yui having fun with the Kinengumi amidst their goofy act, and the school definitely coming into their morning assembly under the guise of principal Sakio Kocho and the numerous teachers, it's all quite the comedy going for it. Rikon Densetsu's ED is kind of good. Not sure who's going to pick this show up, but fansubs to the rescue! Lots of comedy to be had.

Looks like we won't be able to watch the remake either without waiting for subs xD Been too long since I've seen the first episode of the older series to remember much so I had refresh my memories a bit. Compared to the OG the directing feels lacking. The 85 version had a sense of being overdramatic in an epic fashion which enhanced the ridiculousness, whereas this seems to be toned down quite a bit. Makes it merely come across as so stupid that it's funny in a straight forward way. I also prefer the soundtrack, the character designs and the color palette of the retro version. This may sound too negative, but I still enjoy the remake. It's less of an abomination than Cat's Eye, lol. I wonder which Jump classic will return next.

I got impatient, and used Google Gemini 3.0 Pro to take the German and French subs plus the original audio and make SRT subtitles ( https://pastebin.com/hxAq69VA ). The video used was the Msub version from ToonsHub on the catgirl site. Please fansubbers, save me from having to make this slop. 😭 {{I WILL WRITE EVERYTHING BELOW HERE AS I'M WATCHING, BECAUSE I WANNA DO IT THIS WAY.}} Damn, all of the new seiyuu are a perfect fit, so far. None of them sound even slightly off from the original VAs. And since the orignal wasn't anything visually spectacular, Seven (A damn hentai and 4-koma adaptation studio) is shockingly competent here. Yes, the intro bit with tha gang was kinda cringy, but jesus fuckin christ the original adaptation's Kimengumi intro is SO MUCH CRINGIER. I'm glad they didn't reuse it as it was in the old adaptation. Though... SEVEN, PLEASE DO NOT HAVE GOU FROWN! IT'S WEIRD IN A BAD WAY! ED choice was kinda unfitting, but oh well. Not like the old adaptation's ED choices were significantly less unfitting. Anyway, really good first episode. It very much reminds me of the UY readaptation, and how it was different and much faster than the old TV adaptation, but still held onto the same feeling the original had. I'm happy that this anime is back. EDITS: Yeah, every edit here was just me doing exactly what I crossed out. And I'm serious, if my slop subs appear on the catgirl site before the real fansubs, I'mma flip my shit. 🫵DO🫵NOT🫵DO🫵IT🫵 BIG NEWS! Amazon has this anime now, with English subs. My AI slop subs are no longer needed! 🙌

I thought the episode was fantastic, from the opening to the introduction of the characters. It's great that they kept the same basic storyline while adding a modern touch. The different characters are easily recognizable, and their core identity is the same as in the original 80s series. The voice acting and backgrounds are top-notch. The ending is fantastic. This is a high-quality anime; you quickly reconnect with the various groups from middle school. In short: Magnificent.

This was on my to watch list but I'm having trouble finding subs ATM since apparently nobody licensed it. Eh, I'll give it a week and if I still can't find any it'll hafta go back on plan to watch. Disappointing though as I did want to watch this lol. EDIT: Well I saw it and as my first exposure to the franchise that was certainly...something? Wacky, energetic and chaotic, it felt like we went through an entire series in one episode. Which I guess we sorta did. A year anyway. I liked it enough to keep watching, but the possibly unreliable sub release schedule makes me wanna put it near the back of my weekly watch list. I guess that's alright.

No iconic music like the original show. No "limit" jokes like the original show. They deleted the core spirit of the show that they use humor and absurdity to face the backlash of their ugliness. The rush the presentation of all the bands into the first episode. They tried to replace old reference jokes with new modern ones ( ok the mad max one was funny ) but they only find very few. They seem to have diminished the central role of the leader Rei, and the blooming love with Yui. Animation is a huge failure. I went to watch again the original show after being so deceived.

It definitely feels cheaper than the original anime, but I still found this really funny. It's joyfully chaotic it puts a smile on my face. Looking forward to the next episode!

I know a story written 4 decades ago would be wacky but this is even wackier than showa-era standard. But I actually like it. My only complain is that none of the first anime adaptation's voice actors and actresses are back even though many of them are still active. But the new VAs are also good.

As a person who loved the 1985 anime , I won't say this remake is fantastic or a disappointment It's still funny and made me laughed at some points , but it doesn't give the same vibes as the original , which was a blast Generally , episode 1 of the original gets a perfect 10 , while the remake gets 7 Still hoping it would be better later

This episode wasn't interesting enough or funny enough for me to watch more, but I really appreciate how unrepentantly 80s it was. I felt kind of nostalgic watching it, and I haven't ever seen so much as a minute of the original show.

Damn. What a weird, over-the-top, comedy anime. The manga has a 7.28 rating, so it's technically supposed to be a good series. I mean, it's okay so far, I guess. Haven't watched the original 1985 version or read the manga. Looks like something I'll watch all the way to the end. Oh, and apparently, only 13 chapters (out of 261) of the manga have been translated in English, so it'll be too difficult to find the episode/chapter equivalent for each episode.

Well, at least someone picked this series up for an English translation. It's better than nothing. I thought I'd have to wait for fansubs again. Ok. WHY did they not use the song in the trailer for the OP, which was a new version of the OG OP??? I feel baited. The OP was how I discovered the OG anime. The perspective shots are still insane to me, and it's really impressive for an 80s anime. Meanwhile, this new OP only has one. I don't think the new OP and ED are "bad," but I hate how misleading the trailer was. At least I like the voice cast. It's crazy how much Tomokazu Seki sounds like Shigeru Chiba. If I didn't know any better, I'd think he reprised his role. Interesting how this series takes place in the modern day, considering all the other 80s remakes I've seen mostly stick to the 80s setting. And, well, as expected, the remake version differs a lot from the original anime. Mostly, the pacing is way faster. I'm not sure if it's more like the manga or not, but the remake, at least in the first episode, is way more batshit insane, and I like it so far. 80s anime were far too liberal when it came to adapting the source material. That aside, they literally graduated in just one episode? Idk if that happens in the OG anime that fast, but it definitely doesn't happen in episode 1. I knew this anime would be fast-paced because it's only 1 cour, but I didn't think it'd be THIS fast. Having a hentai studio animate this was certainly a choice. I wonder if this is going to be a multi-season adaptation like Ranma 1/2 or just a one-and-done thing. Probably the latter. Anyway, I'm gonna keep watching both versions as they come out.

@Neonxgenesis2 News for you my friend, the original anime isn't loyal to the manga at all besides the mini bicycle adapted from the 1st chapter of the manga, so nothing you're complaining is valid because the new anime aint following the original anime which already didn't followed the manga, it's 2 different adaptations of the original manga.

@Shinuki_n_Reborn I'm a fan of the original from the two cours I've watched, so knowing that there's a good chance that the new one and old one (Which I haven't even finished watching) will have no episodes in common besides the first one...

Whew!!! This is going to be a rough ride.... 90% of this ep was unfunny with little laughs here and there. It feels like they're trying really hard to crack a joke every second and it fails miserably.
