Don't get me wrong I do want to watch Evangelion but I heard there are flaws such as it can get a little pretentious at times, controversial and confusing ending, characters such as Shinji and Asuka can be unlikeable at times even though they do have their reasons of being flawed, early episodes have a plot a and b formula with them at first talking then fighting the angels and lots of plot inconsistencies that had to be filled in the director's cut versions of episodes.

to me a 10/10 doesn't mean something is 'flawless' but rather that you don't think it should be changed in any way

with that said, evangelion is not my 10/10

No anime is without flaws. If 10/10 meant flawless then no anime could achieve it.

Just watch it and you will see. I mean I believe objectively there is probably nothing like an actual 10/10 show, but if we are talking about emotional impact and what an anime can actually deal with, this show is definitely a 10/10 easily for me.

I'm personally not that hard on the ending. Of course it all devolves into some sort of metaphysical nonsense at some stage, but I actually think that it makes a lot of sense in a way.

Also, of course the intro music is the best there ever was and I won't hear anything to the contrary.

I gave it a 10 because it was better the second time I watched it and still amazing the third time I watched it. First time around I didn't feel it was anything special, but then that was at a time where I didn't speak English (my second language) and watched it with English subtitles. I looked up the word "ceiling" a whole lot.

If you end up watching and liking it, don't miss out on the Death and Rebirth movie. It together with End of Evangelion is the first sequel, while the Rebuild movies are essentially season 3.

because a 10/10 is completely subjective to the person watching. Doesn't matter if something that has flaws or even borderline garbage, somebody will find it a 10/10 because it felt like it to them. Just because someone rates an anime a 9/10 doesn't mean everyone who watched it will rate the same

i gave the first 24 eps a 7/10, bc as you said it is not without its flaws.

only the film is worth a 10/10 or 9/10 tho. and that it sticks the landing is what really cements the greatness of the thing as a whole.

The “pretentious” part of the show is people looking too far into it when that wasn’t the point of the show in the first place. If you just take the show for what it is, it’s not pretentious at all.

These arguments probably came from people who watch something while noting down every "plot inconsistency." But in the end, they can't form a perspective and get frustrated, calling the work pretentious when they are unable to recognize their own limitations. That said, watch it; all these "flaws" are actually great benefits, just live the experience along with the characters.

I would say watch yourself and make your own opinion. A piece of art doesn’t have to be perfect to have an emotional impact on the viewer. A lot of the time that just trumps perceived flaws. I know it does for me.

thats not true. the fact is not all stories are created equal. some thrive under scrutiny bc every detail is intentional, others do not bc many elements are simply an afterthought and fanmade headcanon is just a poor solution to shallow writing.

it's not pretentious to accept this reality when a story genuinely has more to offer than whats on the surface. a lot of times the curtains are just blue and theres nothing more to it, but you picked the wrong story to say this about.

I watched it as one of my first anime after newer stuff and finally rated it 7/10. I'm fully aware of its contributions to anime as a genre and also read up on its production history.
Still it wasn't for me, thus my rating. Maybe everyone here should have watched the original series, but rate it not only for its meaning in anime culture.

I try to put my shows at a sliding scale. So the best things I've ever watched gets 10, the worst gets 0. I don't have 0s on myanimelist because they are generally fan made or even self made.

10s mean they were so impactful, it modified my outlook on life in some ways. Quality is irrelevant.

Because it deserves it for the sheer genius of it, for the mastery of its character writing, for how deeply it speaks to the hearts of all of us who can relate to the characters and their struggles, and for how strongly it has impacted its medium and art in general.

It also only has one real flaw, which is the lack of continuity between episode 24 and 25, plus maybe the last two episodes, while good, were clearly made in a week. But End of Evangelion exists which fixes all of these problems, so thinking of the show and movie as one thing, it's perfect. Nothing less.

This reason is why for me it wasn’t even a 9/10 and a reason gave the the TV series an 8. Although you can say things like the flaws is what makes the special, to me that rhetoric held no meaning and was simply something burdening the show. No show is flawless, but as someone who rates based on how many flaws you have as a primary factor, this show is overrated. Show is still really good, just not masterpiece good. Also your question of why people rate it a 10/10 is because they don’t hold the same idea of “flaws” the same as us.

Nothing in life is flawless that is why we try to find meaning in flaws. I personally see flaws as a sign of humanity and beauty, everyone is different though. No anime if flawless, but the flaws in Eva are what make it beautiful.

i don’t think a flawless piece of media exists technically, so 10/10 for me means the positives outweigh the negatives so much that they become negligible.

that being said, i still wouldn’t give Eva a 10 lol

Yeah eps 25 and 26 are basically not canon as they are effectively replaced by EoE in continuity.
I dont consider the original eps 25 and 26 in my evaluation of the anime.

Sounds like you already made up your mind about it without even watching it. Tbh, if you are gonna watch it thinking about how you're gonna be confused the entire time and be annoyed by the main characters, I would recommend you to just skip it. Although I'm one of the people that gave it a 10 here, I don't think it's a must watch. If you think this show doesn't sound appealing or it doesn't meet the kind of story you would enjoy, just skip it.

Before watching it, I also heard that it was confusing and that the ending was very unsatisfying. But I also heard that it isn't really about the plot but the overarching themes throughout the show and EoE. So I set myself to watch the original show and almost immediately watch EoE, knowing that I wasn't gonna get a typical satisfying narrative. Even without that, I felt the emotions poured into this story.
I was fine not understanding everything, I don't think that is the goal of Evangelion. But of course, I completely understand that some people will think that sounds very unappealing or pretentious. If watch it thinking you're gonna hate it, you're gonna hate it.

Lots of people critique the last episode of evangelion for being more symbolic then actually exlaining in great detail what was going on. The movie end of evangelion fixes this problem. Although anyone rating a show 10/10 is going to be biased to some degree

just watch evangelion. there’s a definite reason shinji and asuka are unlikeable to many people yet relatable to many others. the early episode formula is definitely there but what’s important is that the show is subversive and completely flips that formula on its head when you get a little more into the show. the best works of art are often times controversial, confusing, and thought provoking. there are definitely valid criticisms of the show, movies, and the rebuild series, but it’s very hard to make those criticisms or open up discussions about these things without watching the show.

i’d suggest keeping note of all the things you hear criticisms about and have concerns of before watching the show. then after watching it come back to them and see if your opinion shifts. whether you agree with those original assertions or disagree with them. there’s no right or wrong answers of course, it’s just a way you can really have a more productive discussion about it.

those are the things that make Evangelion so compelling. Shinji and Asuka being unlikable is intentional and thus artistically and thematically resonant with a lot of people. the actual worst parts of the show are the child sexualization and lava/virus episodes.

i didn't give it a 10, but if your standard for 10/10 is perfect, you're basically just using a base 9 scale. No media ever can ever be "perfect".
My view of what 10/10 should be is just one step above 9, similar to what 9 is for 8, and so on. Usually, what this means is an extremely powerful experience where the flaws do very little to dampen the effect. Imo, Evangelion falls short of that status, but I definitely understand people who think it achieves that.

Because when it’s good (entire second half) it’s some of the most well written character drama and profound psychological commentary in tv history. If it’s something you in any way resonate with the show feels like it’s digging deep into your mind and confronting you for your deepest flaws and traumas. Everything in it from the characters to the plot to the action feels so visceral and real as the creator really put himself into every minute of the show. Even the first half which isn’t as good has great action and the characters are still extremely well written, complex, and have the same critical flaws that lead to their fates in the end.
It’s the best depiction of depression and anxiety in film that I have seen and is something that has helped many people out of a bad place due to the powerful positive message of the shows ending. (As well as the bleaker but still positive ending to the masterpiece of a movie that is end of evangelion)

If you’re someone who just wants to see good plot and action then evangelion is not for you but if you’re in a bad place mentally and want to feel a little less alone for a few hours - and maybe be lifted out of your mentality through a powerful work of art - then evangelion is what you’re looking for.

by that logic no story would deserve a 10/10. Some of the criticisms you have could be applued to Shakespear too by that logic. Btw, I'm not really an Evanghelion fan and I think the fans are pretentious too. Still the ending was weird because it was rushed, rather than badly written.

I've heard the videos calling Evangeline hard to understand or with many flaws but (and maybe it's because I haven't seen enough anime) I thought it was pretty damn good and watched the whole series, I'll be buying the manga too heh
