I do not score based on how good I think something is from a critical point of view. I score almost purely based on my personal level of enjoyment. Cowboy Bebop for example is objectively probably a 9/10 at least, but I rate it a 7 because while I thought it was great, it just did not stick with me the way it did with many other people.
I like to leave a lot of room in my 1-10 scale for the stuff I love. If something is an 8/10 in my list, it is already something I consider to be special. Baccano! is a series that I love, but not as strongly as I do Toradora, so I rate the former an 8 and the latter a 9. I am extremely selective of what I give a 10 because I want to save that for the anime that, for me, transcend media as a whole as true works of art. In a nutshell, my 8-10 scored shows are my favorite anime separated into 3 tiers of love.
7/10 is one of the scores where most anime I watch fall into. A 7 anime is one I had a great time with and would likely actively recommend to others, but did not do enough to break the 8/10 barrier and become something special to me.
6/10 is my other most common scoring. It is an anime I thought was good but likely have not thought about much since finishing. A 6 is NOT a bad rating on my scale.
5/10 is true mid. A 5 anime is overall neither good nor bad, or the bad does not notably outweigh the good and vice versa.
4/10 is an anime that was probably just straight up bad. Not something horrible that made me miserable when watching but still a definitively below average experience.
3/10 on the other hand is a miserable experience.
2/10 anime are a true rarity, the handful I have seen that I assigned this score are ones I can still be filled with anger even just thinking back on them.
1/10 is a perfectly, irredeemably bad anime. It is special the same but opposite way a 10/10 is. Since everyone tends to watch more good anime than bad, I believe this score should be an even more rare occurrence than a 10.
