I really love this show. It’s very charming. The female lead is very cute- sensible and down to earth, but also loves to put on a show. The male lead is darker, but interesting. Their dynamic is really cute. There are also other loveable side characters, including at least two strong female characters.
One of the best things about this show is its humor. The jokes are really funny and I laughed a lot. At the same time, while there’s a lot of light-hearted fun, there’s also a lot of actual heart, with real emotions and connections. A great chord-based BGM brings it all to life- it made me think of a warm, firelit room every time it came on.
I’ve seen a lot of isekai by now, and in terms of handling the transmigration itself, this is one of the better ones. It doesn’t gloss over the transmigration and addresses directly the emotional trauma the characters face. But while this is done well, I think the real strong points of the show are the good humor and lovable characters.
I loved this show so much and couldn’t wait for Season 2, so I found the book online and binge read it. I have to say, while the book is also funny (and also gives helpful explanatory information), I found the remaining material to be a bit less charming than what I saw in Season 1.
I don’t know if it’s necessarily the story getting worse. It might be the donghua that brings everything to life, making the characters and humor really pop and leaving me with a warm and fuzzy impression. The art is good, the voice acting is great (I love the female lead’s VA), and that one background song is so warm. I’m hopeful the animated Season 2 will bring out the best of what I liked in Season 1.
By the way: the first time I watched this show, I had really bad subs and missed an important point. Here’s some explanation to alleviate anyone’s confusion. The protagonist transmigrates into a story that is about a transmigrator, so there are actually two nested layers. Xie Yong’er is a transmigrator with knowledge of one trashy novel, but herself is a character in the trashy novel that our real heroine (Yu Wanyin) has entered. Therefore. Xie Yong’er is trying to change the events that occur in the novel she read, while Yu Wanyin knows what she does to change those and how it turns out, so she’s trying to change it on top of that.
