Dirk is my favourite supermarket in The Netherlands. 80% of my food/drink items are purchased there throughout the year, so I am an absolutely regular shopper there. Why! Good value always, clear pricing of offers and no gimmicks like worthless airmiles, stamps, bonus boxes etc, etc. Top brands prices below rivals. Also a wide range of attractively priced 'other household or personal items' available on offer every week. I save many hundreds of Euros each year by shopping with Dirk.

Dear Eric,

Thanks a lot for your message — what a great compliment!

We love hearing that Dirk is your go-to supermarket and that you're such a loyal shopper. It's exactly why we do what we do: offering top quality at the lowest prices, without unnecessary fuss. No gimmicks, just clear deals and real value — that’s how we like it too.

Knowing you save hundreds of euros a year and appreciate both the brands and weekly deals makes us proud. We'll keep doing our best to surprise you with great offers and products that truly matter.

Thanks for shopping with Dirk — you can count on us!

Best regards,

Deteriorated quality of products.

The quality of the products has deteriorated over the last few years.
a) Fruits from South Africa have been of really low quality. Oranges that don't really taste like oranges and lemons that can barely be squeezed.
b) I recently bought a rib steak and after boiling the meat for literally two hours, it was still like rubber. I had to through it away as it couldn't be eaten.
c) The shelves are quite often missing products even during rush hours.
d) Some of the bakery products are way overcooked. Dark brown to almost black, but they are still on the shelves offered to the customers.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for your message. We’re sorry to hear about your recent experiences – that’s not the quality you should expect from Dirk.

We take your feedback seriously. Whether it's fruit that lacks flavour, tough meat, empty shelves or overbaked bakery items – it all matters. We want our customers to rely on us for good quality at the lowest price, and clearly, we’ve fallen short in your case.

We’re passing your feedback on to the relevant teams so we can take a closer look and improve where needed. If you have more details or if there’s anything specific we can follow up on, please let us know via dirk.nl/contact
. We’d like to make it right.

Aggressive behaviour

The manager and staff at the Bilderdijkstraat Dirk are extremely aggressive and hostile towards their clients.

Out of the three big Dutch supermarket…

Out of the three big Dutch supermarket brands in the Netherlands; Dirk, Jumbo, and Albert Heijn, Dirk is the only one who claims their profile on Trustpilot. I think that is commendable in itself. However, I will outline below why Dirk is generally a pretty decent supermarket.

Price for what you get is by far the best:
Dirk offers cheaper goods than the other supermarkets in the Netherlands, while still being very accesible in my city (Amsterdam). They have offers on items that put both Jumbo and AH to shame. As someone who has started shoping at Dirk much more often, it is easily a third cheaper on some items than its competition. Worth considering this.

Opening times and accesibility:
It's opening times are pretty decent, with my local Dirk being open until 21:00.

Overall, based on those two factors I would say its my favorite supermarket in the Netherlands. Its products can be limited, but for basic goods it is excellent.
If my experience changes, I will update my review to reflect this.

Racial profiling from sales assistants

The worst grocery store in the Netherlands, Sales assistant raised her voice at me and accused me of not paying for all the items. She counted how many items i had and checked my receipt. Racial profiling through assuming that someone stereotypical may be a criminal is unacceptable.
They also have no formal complaints procedure as a company, just very informal system of whatsapp assistants who have no experience handling complaints.

Bought 2 boreks which are licking from the oil. Oil it's just dropping from the paper bag in which it was packed.
I have made a photo.
Also it's heavy overbaked.
It's disgusting.
Also selling kaneel brodjes from the freezer. They are still half frozen.
Very disappointed of this shop in rinstraat 48

Learned nothing

This is about the Dirk store at the Marie Heinekenplein in Amsterdam.
In the last year, I have been accused of theft twice, I have done nothing wrong.
They pick me out because of the way I look or dress, the people that work there are either stupid or/and plain rude.
In 2003, employees of this store, kicked a woman who was wrongfully accused of theft, she died of her injures.
18 years down the line, and it seems they haven't learned from this, there is simply no normal conversation possible.
After more then 20 years, I will buy my weekly groceries somewhere else.

Well worth 5*

Dirk Harderwijk.
Quite amazed to see a low score at this supermarket. Recently they have built a huge new supermarket next door to the old, temporary building. Staff are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Large and various amount of products. Now they also have a small off licence with weekly offers. Op top of all this the non food products range is very good, from tv's to garden items, phone chargers to toys. Well worth a visit and their prices are very competitive. No idea why the other reviews were so low.

Excellent experience and quality food!

It's a very good shop, and I loved shopping there while I lived in The Netherlands. But unfortunately I left and moved to Yorkshire in the UK where there are no Dirk Van Den Broek shops in my area.I miss the shop very much and would be very happy for it to branch out over here.

you need to have an id-card even if you are 33 and 34 if you want to buy alcohol, and that's ok. My bf had his passport and he's 34 years old, I'm 33 and I only had a picture on my phone (that I used 2 weeks before in this exact shop to buy wine) she refused my photo. So I went home to pick up my passport. 15 minutes later i'm there again but this time alone so she refused to sell me those beers cause my bf wasn't there anymore(while he showed her his passport) and this time she calls the location manager immediately. I couldn't find any of the rules she mentioned on the their website. friendly like a punch in the eye... it felt she on purpose decided that I didn't deserve those beers. funny we are there like twice or three times per week.

Discrimination and rude to customer

Today I went to one Dirk supermarket (Leiden Stevens flower
2331 JC Leiden) in Leiden. During waiting for my wife to finish shopping inside, I was taking some pictures of the hall outside of the supermarket. Suddenly, one of the colleagues reported to the manager of this supermarket, and let him stop me from taking pictures. I told him that I know the privacy and not sharing to any social media. He even threatens to sue me. Later on, this manager went to me again and filming me on his phone. I think he is violating my privacy in this way. One more thing which is annoying to me also is that he said "There is no privacy in China". I think this is not only violating my privacy, what he is saying here is totally racism and discrimination. I ask him to explain what he said about China and he run away and ask me to "Ga weg". I think as a customer of Dirk it's my responsibility to report this kind of discrimination and ask for a property explaination.
