committing fully to making a ball jointed doll from scratch. Wish me luck

WE ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE. Sculpted the torso, split it into 2 and hollowed out the top half, made the thighs. Will later add notches to joints to allow more movement. So far it’s been smooth sailing, so fingers crossed it all fits together when it’s all done!

image
image

UPDATE all the body parts are done! Next I need to figure out how to do the head. Lots and lots of carving and adjusting joints, and I anticipate much more of that when I put them together and sand!

image
image
image
image
image

Jesus christ. I thought the head would be fairly straightforward but I think I spent like 4 hours on the back tentacles ALONE….the head is hollow on the inside to accomplish string and magnets. Trying to control a floppy hollow piece is a nightmare. Anyways, it should be all good, I’m really super happy with how their face turned out

image

Everybody please wish them luck they are going to be baked

image
image
image
image

THEY HAVE BEEN BAKED SUCCESSFULLY!!!!! I got around to stringing parts of them up, some of the pieces are reeeally hard to shove a string into so I may try to drill/sand those down. Otherwise the joints all work fairly well and fit together and they MOVE !!!! You guys have no idea how insane I feel. The next step will probably be trying to glue the magnets into their head so that the head pieces can attach. I’m gonna hold off on priming/painting for the time being mainly because I really love the texture right now and I’m scared that painting and varnishing them will turn out sticky…

Anyways they turned out so so cute AND they can wear my earrings. I can’t wait to get them fully strung up and poseable and make clothes for them

HI EVERYONE so i got them all strung up and partially sanded down and I’m just fiddling around with fabrics and clothes that don’t need sewing and guys…I’ve been obsessed….

Long awaited update! I finally got some test tablets done to figure out what procedure I want to go for to paint them. From the top: primed and with paint medium, unprimed and with paint medium, unprimed and no medium, and primed and no medium.

The unprimed ones are definitely winners in terms of texture. The one without medium only took 1 coat and feels almost just like the baked clay surface, which I do love. I will have to varnish it either way, so it’s going to come down to the unprimed tablets. I’ve put varying layers of varnish to compare, and since I don’t have to prime, I could probably paint and varnish them in one day! Stay tuned!

image
image

Also I ordered some overalls for them and they are sooooooo cute

image
image
image
image

Today’s update I had to take them apart and put them in a fucked up contraption setup to paint. Literally doing some saw trap shit to them. If I had a smaller brush I think the eyes would have come out cleaner but it’s good enough. I’m going to have to be so so patient waiting for the varnish coat to dry before putting them back together

image

HI EVERYONE. This is the last update to this massive long thread. They are officially done!

I actually had finished painting and varnishing them a couple of days ago. When I tried stringing them up, some of the paint on their joints started to chip. I added another coat of varnish to the joints and waited some more. Regardless, it unfortunately still chips paint. If I make another ball jointed doll like this, I’ll have to do more research on coloring sculpey. The one I use and trust for making dolls don’t come in other colors.

Overall, for being my first ever ball jointed doll, I’m pretty happy! I learned a lot from this project and it only makes me more excited to make another one. I’ll be posting more about them when I make their “canon” outfit! All of their posts are under #kinoga bjd on my blog. Thanks everyone who supported me on the journey! If you are interested in making your own, I watched videos from this youtube playlist on tips and construction. You may have to consult both bjd spaces and polymer clay spaces for specifics, as I did.

re: oc asks, monster for trito and kinoga :)

monster: Is your OC monstrous in any way? Is there something that makes them monstrous? Are they aware of their own monstrosity? Do they accept it or reject it?

For both of them, I don’t really think so! “Monster” doesn’t really apply to them in any sense in either of their characters arcs or self perception. At the very least, they don’t think themselves as monsters in the sense that “monsters” are dehumanized, othered, not seen as people.

On Trito’s end, in regards to his scar, he doesn’t think it makes him monstrous or ugly or unloveable, it’s more about the pain associated with how it happened and his past life that was left behind as a result that bothers him.

On Kinoga’s end, their guilt about leaving for the surface doesn’t really manifest as thinking themself to be a monster ( but it does make them feel selfish in retrospect and they do feel terrible about it). There’s more fear directed towards the outside world and the surface than there is towards themself or that they perceive other people to think of them as monstrous.

cityandking:

oc asks: not-so-nice edition

alone: How does your OC deal with loneliness? Have they ever been completely alone before? How do they act when there’s no one around to see them?

betrayal: Has your OC ever been betrayed by someone they thought they could trust? Has your OC ever betrayed someone who trusted them?

bound: Has your OC ever been imprisoned or captured? What happened? How did they get out? Did the experience leave any scars?

break: What would cause your OC to break down completely? What do they look like when that happens? Has anyone ever seen them at their lowest?

desire: What’s one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?

failure: What’s your OC’s greatest failure? Have they been able to move past it? Does anyone else know about it?

fear: What is your OC’s greatest fear? What do they do when confronted with it? Are they open with their fear, or do they hide it away?

future: What’s the worst possible future for your OC? Are they taking steps to avoid that outcome? Are they even aware it’s a possibility?

ghost: Who or what haunts your OC? What happened? How do they live with their ghosts?

guilt: What is your OC guilty about? How do they handle their guilt? Do they try to avoid guilt, or do they accept it?

hate: What does your OC hate? Why? How do they act towards the object of their hatred?

heartbreak: Have they ever had a relationship that ended badly? Experienced some other kind of heartbreak? What happened?

hide: What does your OC hide? Why do they hide it?

hunt: Who or what is your OC hunted by? A person, a feeling, a past mistake? Is your OC able to let their guard down, or are they constantly alert?

mask: Does your OC wear a mask, literally or figuratively? What goes on beneath it? Is there anyone in their life who gets to see who they are under the mask?

midnight: What keeps your OC up at night? Do they have nightmares? Fears? Anxieties? What do they do in the small hours of the morning when they should be sleeping?

mistake: What’s the worst mistake your OC ever made? What led to them making it? Have they been able to fix it? How have they moved on?

monster: Is your OC monstrous in any way? Is there something that makes them monstrous? Are they aware of their own monstrosity? Do they accept it or reject it?

nightmare: What does your OC have nightmares about? How do they deal with their nightmares? Do they tell people, or keep it to themself?

pain: What’s the worst pain your OC has ever felt? Do they have a high pain tolerance?

secret: What’s one secret your OC never wants anyone to know about them?

skin: How comfortable is your OC in their skin? Do they grapple with anything that lives inside them—a beast, a curse, a failure, a monster? How do they face the smallest, weakest, most horrible version of themself? Are they able to acknowledge it at all?

torture: Has your OC ever been tortured? Would your OC ever torture someone else?

wound: How does your OC handle being wounded? Are their wounds mostly physical? Mental? Emotional? What’s the worst wound your OC has ever experienced?
