  • Theseus on the Killing of the Minotaur Out for an hour under the canopy of stars, Crete fallen from view like a swiftly melting dream, our ship unpursued, I began to feel greasy and stained as if I had cheated, as if I'd been unmanned. We'd barely been stalled in the antechamber and told to wait by the labyrinth door, when a girl appeared and delivered me a blade, a lamp, a ball of wool, ordered that I kill the Minotaur. She comes with us now, weeping. But the thing I killed was no beast. At the message I gave, it scrabbled to its knees and turned away, nodding its head, bleating a word that sounded like please. That creature, shielding its eyes from my lamp then grovelling, was no bull king. Something's left undone, some evil lies at the labyrinth's core like a worm. This grieving sister who walks off when we dock at Naxos, her slim back disappearing in the crowd, veiled and instantly anonymous - with all her talk of being a guardian, is only a woman. I feel like a doll strangely played in a script whose plot I do not understand. I don't change the sails from black to white to telegraph to my so-called father, the King, that we have returned, that the burden of the tribute is lifted. I cannot say for sure if the sacrifice is done, or we've simply given the slip to the Cretan king. When I sleep I see that brother twitching at my feet as he died; the way he first crept up like a dog, wagging and whimpering and longing and afraid, something lonely and abased, something that only wanted to be fondled, to lick my hand.ALT
