“I am the true green and golden lion, without cares; in me lies hidden all the secret [knowledge] of the philosophers.”

“Leo Viridis (The Green Lion). It is Mercury (☿): and you should know that it is cold and moist. From it, God created all minerals. For it is the element and the Spirit, fleeing from the Fire (△)… it is the foundation in every body, raising it up, illuminating and converting it from one state to another; from color to color. It is the Living Water and the Water of Death, and the Virgin’s Milk. And its operations are one way when it is alive, and another when it is dead. And it is the Dragon.”

GWitch: Red King and White Queen

I felt like I was onto something in my As Above, So Below post when mentioning the Philosopher’s stone. After a bit more research, I’m fairly certain that’s the intent

image
image

In Alchemy the marriage of the Red King and White Queen is an allegorical union between sulfur (Red King) and mercury (White Queen). Their dissolution and coagulation is a method for gaining the Rebis or Philosopher’s stone.

The stages of the union are as follows:

image
image

Nigredo, dissolution or blackening. This stage is the complete breakdown and blackening of elements. In Jungian psychology, it signifies a complete beakdown of self/ego under immense despair

image
image

Albedo, purifying or whitening. The next stage involves the purging of impurities. The soul is cleansed of its shadow/ego.

image

Citrinitas, awakening or yellowing. In this intermediary stage the elements are filled with inner solar light. An awakening of self as the final stage nears. (Considering we have a solar ray involved, this feels pointed)

image

Rubedo, coagulation or reddening. The final stage is unity as two alchemical opposites marry. The Red King and White Queen

Considering the theme of cycles and my analysis on As Above, So Below this isn’t the first time a Red King has joined with a White Queen. Notrette and Elnora were the first and spawned both homunculi and a method for eternal life. Their magnum opus

Which alchemist would win the great british bake off ?

S-TIER:

Maria Hebrea - Invented the casserole dish and the double-boiler. Distinct advantage with tempered chocolate. Her precision and inventiveness would allow her to nail the execution of every dish even if her flavors were off.

A-TIER:

Avicenna - Extremely broad skillset. Breezes through the technicals but might be a consistient second place to bakers with more flash.

Cleopatra the Alchemist - Invented the alembic. Everything is an infusion. Complex and delicate flavors but might suffer in the technical.

B-TIER:

Paracelsus - A wild card. Radical, experimental flavors and executions. Absolutely kills when he can pull off his vision, but routinely runs out of time.

Johann Faust - Whimsical, complex, understated, but perhaps too understated. Absolutely unflappable skill. Flavors are odd, but not bad. Most people don’t have the patience to appreciate his work.

C-TIER:

Heinrich Khunrath - Methodical to the point of self-sabotage. Absolutely kills every technical challenge. Texture and execution are flawless to scientific perfection. Barely makes the time limit.

Basil Valentine - Very pretty. Mostly fondant.

Roleplay Ramblings: Alchemy part 1

Intro

While magic items are a big part of the game, there will always be a use for those items that bridge the gap between magic and mundanity, alchemical items!

Alchemy in the real world is a broad term for a variety of philosophical and proto-scientific traditions found throughout the world that focused on understanding the relationship between the individual components of the world with each other and the spiritual. In other words, it was chemistry before the scientific method. Alchemists were often concerned with trying to “purify” metals, transmuting a “base” metal into a “noble” metal, the most famous example being lead into gold; or else they were concerned with some other magnum opus such as immortality, a true “universal solvent”, or even the curing of any disease by way of a universal medicine, or panacea. The idea of the Philosopher’s Stone was born from this, and was often said to be capable of any or all of these feats.

Alchemy also delivers to us the concept of creating life, such as homunculi, or even other constructs, including golems in Jewish folklore, mythos and alchemical/theurgical lore.

Of course, while alchemy did indeed lead to many advancements in how we approach the sciences to this very day, it was still shackled in many ways, such as an obsession with the ancient notion of a limited number of elements from which the world is made, as well as jealously guarding their discoveries behind ciphers and code like its sister philosophy, Theurgy, both of which fall alongside Astrology as the three core sciences of Hermeticism.

In pathfinder, however, alchemy covers the combined magical and chemical discipline that is the alchemist class, which we’ll cover at some point in the future, and the more mundane items they can create. Unlike alchemically brewed potions or the various concoctions that only work for the alchemist that made them, mundane alchemical items can be made by anyone with a sufficient training in the skill of crafting alchemical concoctions, and furthermore function for anyone who carries them.

Such items range from alchemical explosives, enhanced medicines, unique compounds ranging from using chemistry in clever and fantastical ways, to outright breaking physics as well. Of course, these items, just like truly magical items, are meant to be used in a world of fantasy and wonder, and while such items are never quite as powerful as their magical counterparts, they can still perform wondrous acts when used correctly.

Over the next week, we’re going to look at various examples of alchemical items, their uses, and even a neat subsystem devoted to creating alchemical items on the fly!

Okay so, Ive searched everywhere online about what the symbol that Ed, Al and Izumi wear (the snake around the cross) and all i find is people just saying they did it as a signature kinda thing for Izumi? I was wondering if you knew. Thanks!

fma-facts answered:

Mm… I can’t find the posts, but I’ve discussed this before. Iirc all I was able to dig up was that it’s a symbol associated with Nicholas Flamel, and that the FMA version is an original design, with the wings and crown especially being new additions. It also resembles a caduceus, which is the symbol of Hermes, Greek god of (among many other things) alchemy.

In the 2003 anime, it was stated that the Elrics inherited the symbol from Izumi, who inherited it from her teacher, Dante. Dante also had a large decorative flamel hanging in her house, and the flamel was also part of the circle for destroying homunculi. That being said, they never mentioned exactly what it symbolizes, as far as I recall.

In the manga, there is no known meaning behind the flamel symbol. We know that both Izumi and the Elric brothers bear it, but that’s literally all that’s known about it. The symbol itself is never actually discussed, and really just acts as a motif for the series. Also, since the crown and wings are not part of a traditional crucified serpent design, I don’t know what those are supposed to represent. Could be any number of things, really.

I did do another quick google search and came across this: http://carljungdepthpsychology.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-crucified-serpent-and-alchemy.html So that’s fairly interesting if you’re looking for the actual alchemic meaning behind it.
