One of the joys of a role switch AU, is like - as an example - watching IDAU Will trying to provide IDAU Hannibal something that canon Will would have wanted, but that IDAU Hannibal does not necessarily want or need.

And vice versa, obviously.

You can have an alternate version of Will who has chosen, all on his own, to define himself in large part on his active ability to do harm to others. BUT having already embraced that part of himself does not mean that IDAU Will wants anyone else in his life to even know about his “true self.” He doesn’t want to be Seen or accepted or understood or any of the things canon Hannibal is after, but those are things IDAU Hannibal wants to give him because they are things both versions of Hannibal want for themselves.

Anyone remember the fic where Hannibal gets a brain injury in the fall, and he survives it but is in some ways significantly reduced intellectually?

Loses some of the languages he knows, has difficulty expressing himself in the ones he remembers, struggles to produce art?

Will takes care of him and they end up living in a little cottage?

I’d like to reread that one. It’s so much… kinder than some of the post-fall stuff I’ve done.

Which HANNIBAL fic should I try to update tonight?

Zombie Apocalypse Road Trip

Took 56 chapters but I FINALLY got Will and Hannibal together <333

Finally consummating Hannigram in the next chapter of the zombie apocalypse fic, and I’m really excited to get this fleshed out because it’s not going at all like I expected.

dead-freight asked:

i'm really curious about the hungry ghost au 👀 anything you're willing to share?

That’s one of my few WIPs in this fandom that kinda stuttered to a halt. There wasn’t much interest when I posted the first chapter, probably bc I was like layering multiple AUs on top of each other, which is asking for a lot from readers, but I got discouraged and then I got distracted and it’s been on the back burner since.

I do intend to finish it at some point, tho.

But yeah, it’s the same premise as the HUNGERY GHOST AU, aka Hannibal buys a house that is haunted by the tortured spirit of Will, who died there, badly and alone, and whose body was never found. Will’s ghost is functionally an energy vampire, and becomes more solid but is also transformed by the emotions Hannibal feeds him.

But in this AU-AU it’s not mostly canon versions of the characters, but rather the Hannibal and Will from IDAU, which is my roll switch AU.

So it’s not like “Will was living alone in the country, and in a fit of encephalitis-fueled psychosis (or maybe in response to an actual threat, real or supernatural) accidentally locked himself in a trunk in the attic, and died there, and no one found the body until Hannibal bought it to use as a murder den years later. Hannibal finds the body, and then comes to realize that it feeds off emotions, so because he wants to see what happens he starts to kill a series of people there.”

It’s “Will has a secret murder room in the basement of his isolated home. One of his victims gets the best of him, and locks him in a supply chest and then flees the house, but dies of his injuries before he can find help. Will dies in there, and no one finds him until FBI profiler Hannibal comes to an open house and realizes that there’s a secret room. Finds the body, realizes that there’s a ghost, and -”

Except this version of Ghost Will is so much more desperate and violent, and Hannibal is less inclined to feed him the lives of others… So how will that play out?

I got this button by mistake and can’t make the poll go away

yeah

cedarxwing asked:

Nooo ugh sorry you got covid. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

What initially drew you to the Hannibal franchise and what keeps you hooked? Any themes you find yourself returning to again and again in your fics?

Thank u kindly.

I’ve been here for more than two decades, ever since I was like 13. Bryan Fuller just finally went and made a TV show that convinced a lot of people (but sadly not enough to keep it on air…) to join the party.

One thing about it tho was like

Hannibal has always always ALWAYS been a very important character to me (he was the first person I ever heard say that it wasn’t your fault if you were sexually assaulted)

AND

Will was like the first character I could ever point at and go “Same brain! Same brain!!!” Which I have been doing ever since.

But I never really thought about them in relationship to each other, let alone shipped them, until the show?

Like the Hannibal in RED DRAGON sure as shit makes an Impact, but he isn’t on the page for very long, and D is Will’s primary narrative foil there. So when I was thinking about Hannibal I was usually thinking about the Good Bits of the other novels.

Once I realized those possibilities though… Can’t stop now…

Who’s more dangerous?

Hannibal

Will

hisjimct asked:

Ooh also ⭐ something about identically different too please

So what I’m thinking about is like, how I was pretty far into the series before I consciously realized that what I’d done in this AU was actually a social class flip, and that’s what resulted in the role swap.

Will is southern Old Money and the closest thing to nobility (derogatory) that the US has; Hannibal is peasant stock, whose family has benefited from (the extremely mixed bag that was) Soviet social improvements, and among other things he and Mischa are the first members of his family that grew up being taught how to read (his father was literate but only learned as a young adult).

Which, ya know, kinda comes with the implication that growing up rich makes you Worse, which is TRUE actually. However, it’s not really the class difference that were the deciding factors in Will becoming a serial killer and Hannibal opting not to do so (until…) so much as a matter of expectations.

Canon Will, I’ve always felt, was able to escape a lot of abuse simply by staying out of his old man’s way. He’s playing in the woods, staying at the library until it closes, anything to avoid his father, and his father is putting very few expectations on him because he just doesn’t give a shit about Will. There’s physical abuse but it’s mostly neglect, and that gives Will the room to become Observable Weird to others, but also to build his walls and his coping skills.

IDAU Will, on the other hand, simply doesn’t have that kind of freedom. There are very firm expectations about not only what Will is doing with his time, but how he looks, speaks and interacts with others, and deviance is getting beaten out of him behind closed doors. He’s masking in a way that canon Will never learned (or cared) to do, but he’s a fucking powder keg of suppressed emotions and trauma. And his father is Worse for some of the same reasons, and there is no way for Will to get away from any of that, because instead of being a no-account drifter who just kinda incidentally has a kid he never really wanted tagging along after him, Will’s father is Focused on Will and making sure that Will behaves Properly and does not Embarrass the Family.

And eventually, of course, it gets to be too much for Will and he kills his dad, (and good for him!) but unfortunately now Will has realized there there’s one surefire way to bleed off all of that bottled up tension, which is by making it someone else’s problem in the worst possible way.

On the other hand, Hannibal grows up in a Soviet orphanage, as here he has no surviving family to come and retrieve him. He’s under a lot of scrutiny, he’s kept very busy (usually in work that involves caring for the interests of others), and a LOT of effort is going into fostering pro-social behavior in all of the children there. He doesn’t get the chance to kind of withdraw from the rest of humanity and grow happily weird in all of the idiosyncratic ways that the canon version of the character did.

So Will is Worse in this universe because he wasn’t left alone to be Weird in the specific ways that canon Will is Weird, but the opposite is true of Hannibal.

1.How many fics do you have on AO3?

78.

2. What’s your total word count on AO3?

934,933. Wow, maybe I can break a million this year….

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Just HANNIBAL right now (and for like the last seven years or so). Been vaguely thinking about picking up a second but nothing has caught my interest strongly enough.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Attachment - 7,592

The Fisherman and the Beast from the Sea - 4,565

Sashimi - 2,807

Hungry Ghost - 1,585

Identically Different - 1,382 <- This is my best series and yall should give it a shot <3

5. Do you respond to comments?

I try to, and I enjoy doing so, but sometimes the brainworms win and I don’t get stuff done even when I really want to.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Breathless

I don’t love this story, but “Hannibal is effectively braindead after the fall, but Will keeps caring for the body and feels that Hannibal is there with him, up until the body dies and Will turns himself in because there isn’t any point anymore” probably counts as the most angsty?

If you are in the market for a “Hannibal receives a brain injury and he, along with everyone else around him, has to cope with that” story Tina’s For Remembrance (Holes in the Floor of the Mind) is a much better pick.

And as I continue to think about it, Means of Influence has a pretty angsty ending.

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of my stories have slightly bittersweet but still mostly happy endings. Part of the thing about that is I think it’s really hard to envision a situation where Will is like 100% Happy Happy, his own mind hates him too much and every little scrap of happiness needs to be fought for and then vigilantly guarded. But I put both him and Hannibal through so much that I always want them to be as close to content as they each can be.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have gotten two flavors of Fic Hate.

1.) People calling the five year old kid OC in ATTACHMENT slurs like “r*tard” and saying “he belongs in jail” and etc.

Every time Hannibal or Will fuck someone who isn’t each other at least one person decides to Yell At Me.

I think I’ve gotten the old “you didn’t tag for bottom Hannibal!!” nonsense once or twice too, but who hasn’t?

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

A little. I actually started Hannishark bc I was really intimidated by sex scenes and wanted to see if I could pull off a short monsterfucker story.
I feel like I’ve gotten better at writing these but am generally more comfortable leaving them sparce on anatomical details and big on feelings/conversations.

10. Do you write crossovers? If so, what’s the craziest one?

I’ve got a WRONG TURN crossover series that I’m very proud of here: Bear Mountain Road AU. You don’t need to have seen any of the movies to read it, or anything, the movies’ premise of “a clan of inbred mountain cannibals waylays travelers” is really just an excuse to put Hannibal (and Will and D, as child members of the cannibal family) In Situations.
If I counts as a cross over, I’ve got a universe swap between the novels and NBC HANNIBAL here: Shiloh

I also have a vague idea for a SAW / HANNIBAL crossover but I’ve been sitting on that for so long, who knows if it’ll ever happen?

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not so far as I know.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, several times.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Yep, a couple of times.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Hannigram and Reba/D (guys we need a fuckin ship name).

15. What are your writing strengths?

Character, emotions, dialogue.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Sex scenes, pacing.

17. Thoughts writing dialogue in another language?

Fine by me, tho I only think I’ve done it one or twice.

18. First fandom you wrote for?

FARSCAPE.

19. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Identically Different AU !!!! This it the best thing I’ve ever written and probably the best thing I will ever write.

My primary jobs in this fandom is to make people sympathize with D and also to disfigure and/or disable Will as often as is possible. <3

Also I like to make Hannibal cry.

SHILOH spoilers under the cut
