At the turn of the 2000s, the area was the scene of a bloody series of massacres done by the paramilitaries of the AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) in order to have a strategic control of the area. The local population suffered a devastating violence, many civilians were tortured or murdered, many others were forced to abandon their lands and homes in order to survive. See less
