I’ve recently developed some lore on the Leaflings in my universe and I thought I’d share! (Including a drawing down below if u dont wanna read allat lmao)
• They’re split into two species - the common or short-leaved Leaflings and the wild Leaflings, sometimes called The Reclaimed.
• Common Leaflings are all the regular goobers you see in game, while wild Leaflings are folks like Olimar, Sage Leaf and Sonni (my rescue officer OC).
• Short-leaved Leaflings are made in the more common onions. They’re still alive people whose minds are simply being overshadowed by the parasite, so to speak. The control can be very strong, but there’s still a full fledged person under there - allowing for a nearly full recovery when cured.
• Wild Leaflings are made with a different type of onion found in the Primordial Thicket or by alternative means. The subject is already dead during transformation so they’re essentially corpses reanimated by the parasite, with it completely replacing any decayed parts of the brain.
Because of this a wild Leafling’s mental capabilities and memory varies heavily from subject to subject, depending on how long it took to revive them. Some subjects like Sonni and Olimar have sentience and a core identity, but limited memories. Some subjects like Sage Leaf have no recollection of past life or identity, but can still be reasoned with. Some subjects that were in further stages of deterioration act more like animals and usually aren’t curable without irreparable brain damage soon followed by death.
• The general rule of thumb is that common Leaflings are more brainwashed and more docile, while wild Leaflings retain parts of their human self, but at the cost of them being corrupted and volatile.

So, bit of a backstory… I headcanon that on the planet Karut, it cannot grow fruits there! (They couldn’t help in the Koppai food shortage </3) And fruit is scarce on Koppai as it is, it’s basically non-existent on Karut.
But when Cherie was at bootcamp on Giya, a whole different part of the Universe where fruit is easier to come by, she had her first fruit cup and when she tasted it… She felt like she had bitten into heaven itself; it was golden, sweet, and juicy. She was never the same again.
As for what she’d make herself, back on her farm life in Karut, whenever she was lazy (which is often), she’d take a bunch of (space chicken?) eggs and throw it in a pan with some minced onion and shredded stinky cheese. The house would smell for a good couple of hours and Stad, her brother, would always get pissy about it. But Cherie loves it!
…And sometimes she’d make the dish on purpose after an argument with Stad.

Annnnny OC? Well, I feel like my personal OC’s are like a fish out of water on this blog! So, for the sake of simplicity, I feel more inclined to answer this with my Pikmin OC’s!
Io:
Her ABSOLUTE FAVORITE food isss watermelon, honey, anndd… the yolk of a Snagret egg. That, annnnd the nectar! Pollen made her try some and she’s like…
“THIS IS LEGENDARY!”
Perhaps she goes forrr the Ultra Spicy as she likes spicy things, such as the yummier spicy MRE’s (or, rations) on the S.S. Shepherd.
VS
What she ACTUALLY makes for herself! Well! Luckily for Io, her daily expeditions always promise her the chance to find any of her favorite foods, so… as a part of her duty, it’s like a little gift. The only problem is that she has to ensure it’s not being used for Sparklium… so, often it’s out of her discretion. This… leaves her with the MRE’s rather than her favorite foods!
However, when she is allowed to use an ingredient of PNF-404; She goes all out! As if to say,
“If this turns out really well, maybe everyone will like it! (And I can convince them to use less of it for Sparklium, hehehe)…”
Io is an experimental missy and shoots for quality! Yeeeet, often misses the mark… Nevertheless, Io desires that a meal is the best it can be - so, if it’s lacking, she’ll “put it away” i.e, scarf it down and not think about it’s… disappointments… and aim for a better result the next opportunity!
It’s hard to say what food specifically she’d prefer over others… for others…, as it’s dependent on their personal preferences. However, for example, if Collin asked Io to make him his favorite thing, she’d simply just drop everything to make it happen,like…
“Oh, he wants THIS? OK! How do I make it and how do I make it AMAZING. Oh, well, not too amazing if he doesn’t want it too amazing… I need it just right, even if I think it needs some pizzazz. I can respect a bland guy,”
Basically, it becomes her mission of the day to see it done - it’s her favorite if it’s their favorite. Nothing is too easy (if it is, she’ll make it difficult) nor hard for her if she loves ya! She’ll fail and fail and fail again until she gets it right!
Pollen:
This quirky Pikmin loves nectar, yes! And the ultra spicy, and the water of a watermelon, and… uhm, everything Io likes?!
Ahm, well, not so much honey, as he keeps getting stuck in it. Luckily, Marstha comes to the rescue and laps him up!
Pollen and Io are… pretty inseparable, and do everything together… so, anything Io does - Pollen does! If she’s cooking or baking, the little Pikmin opts to getting in the way - to help, of course.
As for the bonus question, Pollen most definitely delights in making his favorite captain something to eat and HAS prepared something for her previously…a nice bowl of boiling nectar.
Marstha:
SCRUMMY BONES, honey, and annnything the officers lend her under the table! In her generosity, the silly girl has tried to feed Io and Pollen her scrummy bone, too.
“Oh, oh, Marstha! I can’t eat that!” Io urged. Pollen was close at the cadet’s side, shying away at Marstha’s offer.

Collin, plus his little Io! His lucky little star… his fragrant little flower… his-
OKAY, SO!!! After a few observational… “big boy, big boy, big boy” comments from my sister, I must explain! Io is purposefully smaller than Collin as to incorporate the same features of Karutians and, heehee, Kojians!
If you think for a SECOND I was being a girly girl and shaping Collin into a man I’d faint over… you’d only be 20% CORRECT because I’m 80% LORE driven. AHEM.
All my biggest thanks to @andrabeets for her advice in how to design Collin in this big version of himself! Finding references of square-shaped faces truly changed the WHOLE game for me here!
