~ Scott’s Emulsion, December 1901

Monkeys are my new comparison currency, as in: “Sure, I didn’t need to buy that hardcover book, but it was cheaper than a new monkey!” or “How many monkeys did that cost you?”

*Scott’s Emulsion was mainly cod liver oil, which didn’t do a thing for consumption (tuberculosis), but it’s a good source of Vitamin D so at least the monkeys didn’t get rickets.

~ General Electric ad, 1901

Grandpa (probably): “Electric lights? Psh. When I was a kid we stuck candles to the dry branches with bits of wax and took bets on when the dang thing would catch fire! Young people are taking all the fun out of the holidays!”*

In 1900 it could cost up to $300 USD to light a tree with electricity ($11,000 in today’s US dollars) so renting was a good option.

*Using bits of wax was one of the ways people stuck candles to their trees. Straight pins and wire were also used. If you are a history nerd like me you can read more about lights, tree fires, and how much it used to cost to light your tree over here or here.
