Description

Panoptigenic refers to systems that formed due to experiences like surveillance, a lack of privacy, or the fear of being watched. It is an adaptive (and more often than not, traumagenic) origin.

Some examples of these experiences may include:

Being stalked.
Needing to stay closeted, or the fear of being outed.
Growing up with "helicopter" or strict parents, especially if they monitor your activity online.
Having your personal space, boundaries, or privacy violated (physically or emotionally).
Using — especially growing up on — the Internet; issues relating to cybersecurity in the age of things like generative AI and age verification laws.
A fear, phobia, or delusion that someone is monitoring you, including as a result of schizospec conditions.
Being told that your abuser, or a higher being, knows what you're doing/thinking at all times.
Religious trauma relating to deities being omniscient (all-knowing).
Government-based surveillance in countries under oppressive regimes.

Members of panoptigenic systems may do everything in their power to give themselves or others in the system privacy, or they may give up on the idea entirely because it seems impossible to achieve. Within the system, there may be an unusually heavy focus on keeping secrets from outsiders. The system may come off as aloof or withdrawn.
