also this will cause me to sing this under my breath for the next twelve weeks
Ultimately, MTV still being on the air is good news, so why do I feel uneasy about this whole situation?
Because it is a straight-up five-alarm information catastrophe that this many people can be this taken in by a story this false and this easily disprovable. There is some high-stakes shit going on in the world right now, and it’s happening as newsrooms shrink, once-reliable search engines point us toward AI nonsense, and news aggregators have no obligation to check their facts. It’s harder and harder to tell truth from fiction, and fewer and fewer of us are bothering to try. If it’s frustrating where and how we’re getting our news on whether MTV is still on the air, it is terrifying that that’s also where and how we’re getting our news on whether we’re dropping bombs on Venezuela. Our media literacy is going to have to come up, fast, or we are cooked like the Christmas goose.
the thing that I love about James Fucking Flint is that I believe him
he starts giving a speech about how we’re going to destroy the entire british empire and end colonialism once and for all and we’re going to start a new self-governing society outside of the constraints of imperialism and I believe him
I have several centuries of hindsight on my side, but I still listen to this man in 1715 saying he’s going to end the british empire and I think yes you will!
and of course, Flint’s ability to rouse and rally people to his cause, to talk them around to his side, recurs over and over throughout. to a point that elevates him near godhood. but you never think, oh that’s not realistic. you never think, why are they listening to him. you never think, yeah okay but if they just acted rationally then—
because you. sitting on your couch. in the 21st century. even with the full knowledge of history and also the plot of black sails because you’ve seen it before.
you hear flint start talking. and you believe him too. you believe he can do it. you believe he’s going to do it. this time. this time, surely he must.
Everyone’s all “ohhh 2026 bring back physical media” until I start talking illuminated manuscripts and then suddenly we’re not on the same page anymore
I made an illuminated manuscript skin for AO3? So im doing my part!
do u think the next season of heated rivalry will address the existence of gritty
recommending black sails to heated rivalry fans because I don’t give a fuck anymore. ‘what do they even have in common ?’ nothing. nothing at all. i am trying to hurt you.

Watching Murderbot on the Perihelion was interesting. It was just as rude and combative and caring as it was on Preservation, but there was a sense of… Mensah searched for the right word. Independence. That was it. Here it was a free agent helping its friend (its large, frankly terrifying friend, who seemed to want to make the best impression possible. Like one of her children’s new significant others). It was no longer beholden to anyone but itself.
Mensah would miss Muderbot when it went to help Perihelion (and she would make sure Pin-Lee knew to make the contract as open as possible for Murderbot - not that she wouldn’t be doing that already, Mensah was sure) but she could see that this was what Murderbot wanted. What it needed right now.
And Mensah would support Murderbot’s freedom with her whole heart.
