about

"Make the music you want to hear and you're golden" - Lone

personal note: this record brings me much joy. It's my shot at authentic futurism, derivative in spirit but de novo in structure. It's my attempt to continue the visionary tradition of our electronic music predecessors of past decades. But in order to make music in the same spirit as these electronic pioneers, I think we should throw away nostalgia and reach for new musical structures and methodologies, from today and from the near-future.

Mark Fisher's book "Ghosts of my Life" in many ways captures what I've been feeling about music lately: everything feels like a nostalgic simulacra. Technology and capitalism have cancelled the future, because we can churn out unbelievably realistic replicas of art from past golden eras. I find reassuring glimpses of futurism in the live coding / algorave movement, xenharmonic music, the hyperpop genre, and experimental music from Asia like the label SVBKVLT.

The deeper I go into exploring unorthodox ideas in electronic music, the more I obsess over things that don't really exist yet and the less I enjoy listening to other people's music. As a result, the music I make plunges further and further away from what labels are looking for.

I feel a moral responsibility to keep creating the kind of things I wish there were more of. And a moral responsibility to share the things that bring me joy. Even if they're too unorthodox to be truly welcomed anywhere today. We lose everything when we stop dreaming.

All tracks use a combination of neovim, tidalcycles, Python, Jupyter notebooks, and Ableton Live.
