Today I learned about the inaccessible island rail, which is the smallest extant flightless bird on the planet. It is also the world’s most remote. The island is only 31 kilometers, or 19 miles long.
So fascinating.

My daughter turned 2 yesterday, and now that all the presents are open and she’s had a day to contemplate them all, I’d like y’all to meet her new best friend, Fuzzy Horse.
Two lopsided left eyes, crooked nose, ears sewed on backwards, exposed (and crooked) tummy seam, his tail looks like someone shaved a squirrel then glued it onto old tulle, and his mouth is literally just a dangling piece of black string glued at the ends under his eyes.
He is butt ugly and she adores him. (Tbh, so do I. Fuzzy horse is kind of the best.)
Despite the intimidating name, these shortwings are among the most docile. Total pushovers.
