In practice believing in things like karma, magical thinking, and the universe being fundamentally “fair” can result in some of the most extreme victim blaming imaginable.
I saw this firsthand in my parents, who were both into this kind of bullshit.
For example, believing that anyone in the world could become rich if they actually wanted to. Therefore, if someone is not rich that’s their own fault for not wanting it badly enough.
And then there’s the general idea that, if the world is fair, if something terrible happens to someone then the victim is to blame somehow, even if just by having bad thoughts (which they thought could attract misfortune).
My father even used to say that if someone was ever depressed it was always their own fault and a sign of being stupid. When the stress of his abuse started causing me physical symptoms he used this reasoning to displace the blame onto me as well (and when my mother also started getting sick - also due to stress - he blamed that on me too).
