I’m still really obsessed with Ratthi for shutting down Gurathin’s argument that Murderbot was only PRETENDING to watch Sanctuary Moon by tricking Murderbot into having an emotional reaction in front of other people by lying to its face about Sanctuary Moon. A very funny and very clever move but also one that could only be pulled off by someone who is himself familiar enough with Sanctuary Moon to know how to piss off a Sanctuary Moon superfan in 5 seconds or less. I have now read All Systems Red from The Murderbot Diaries, and I think the main charm of it is I went in fully expecting a “Humans treat robots like appliances then some of them slowly learn not to because of This One Special Example” but instead the crew immediately goes “No, Murderbot is a person. Look at it, it’s got anxiety.”

Meanwhile, Murderbot itself is like “Why was I cursed with a face. Please treat me like an appliance so I don’t have to make eye contact with any of you. I’ve got anxiety.”

I started reading the books LAST NIGHT, and instantly fell very, VERY in love with Murderbot. Who is very anxious and does not wish to be Percieved ™.

“Why don’t you want us to look at you?”

“You don’t need to look at me. I’m not a sexbot.”

You fucked up a perfectly good robot, look it’s got anxiety.

I have a theory that it was Mb’s interactions with Don Abene and Miki that convinced it finally that humans could care about it intrinsically. It saw what a bot treated with kindness and respect could be.
