“i would kill a pedophile to protect my child” ok but would you teach your child how to say no? even to adults? even to adults you like? would you teach your child the words “penis” and “vulva” and then use them? would you let them ask questions about their body? would you answer them honestly? would you learn how to cope with your feelings when you talk about human bodies, so they don’t feel ashamed? would you set a positive example for how you talk about your body? would you tell your child they don’t have to hug or kiss anyone? would you tell your family the same? would you stand by them when they refuse to hug someone? even someone you know has never done anything to hurt them? would you let your child avoid food they don’t like? would you let you child avoid people they don’t like? would you believe them? would you sit in the discomfort of not knowing all the answers and not take it out on them? would you love your child the same if someone did hurt them? would you make them feel valued just as they are? would you let them talk to doctors or nurses in private? would you let them express their feelings? would you show interest in their life? would you let your child say no to you? would you help your child feel safe coming to you when they make a mistake? would you apologize to your child? would you believe them? would you put aside your anger to focus on what would make your child feel safe and loved? would you put your ego aside for your child? would you take your child’s concerns seriously? would you listen to your child? would you believe them?

My coworker had a baby recently, and before she gave birth she told me she was so excited for the kid to grow up a little bit so that she could take her to baby raves. Because apparently there’s a DJ in the area who stages raves that you can bring your kids to, but all of the tracks he plays are pre-approved by his toddler.

The link about methods that produce poor literacy is….staggering, to say the least. The guy who developed the three-cueing method for teaching straight up said he doesn’t believe dyslexia exists

I was a very precocious and hyperverbal toddler and asked the “where do babies come from?” extremely young so when I was almost three I randomly slammed my fork down and demanded to know how babies get into their mommies’ bellies in the first place.

fortunately they make books for teaching your insatiably curious wannabe zoologist toddler about sexual reproduction so by the time I was in preschool I was able to explain to my classmates that bugs stuck together because they were mating and that a similar process had happened between their parents to make them and that it was all a part of the biological cycle of life and death. I would explain this even to much older children who I heard asking what mating animals and insects were doing or sharing incorrect pregnancy information.

so like you can try to shelter your kids all you want but there is a nonzero chance that a hyperverbal autistic toddler will just fucking randomly walk up to them and explain that semen can fertilize an egg cell after insertion of the penis into the vagina, creating an embryo, and that ultimately they and everyone they know are subject to mortality and will inevitably die.

A thing about parenting is that there are a lot of behaviors that you want to encourage your future adult to have that are SO HARD TO HANDLE in children.

He HAS whatever body autonomy I can grant but I really need to marshal some arguments about not letting other children cut his hair while he’s IN class.

OK ok OK ok ONE like we can do whatever we want with our bodies as long as it’s safe but there’s a time and place like for example we only do flips on grass, in houses, or on gym mats. Being naked is also a behavior for specific circumstances like inside a house or swimming in the woods! Hair cutting is like flips or taking off all your clothes!

Two it creates a mess and is really itchy, so we have to plan to do it somewhere where we can clean it up easily and take a bath afterwards and Not! In! Your! Kindergarten! Art! Class!

Three other kids might see how much fun you’re having getting your hair cut and also cut their hair and then be sad about how their hair looks. I know YOU don’t mind (and apparently Malachi is some kind of genius kindergartner barber??) but they might mind how they look, you have to set an example.

Four the teachers get to set the rules for the classroom and if you break those rules then you don’t fill out your sticker chart. I’m pretty sure hair cutting — even consensual hair cutting — breaks a rule. You can check. Ask a hypothetical question. Don’t tell them you’ve been doing this for weeks, they might get upset.

Did a school visit today and asked a group of 8th graders if they could define the term “contemporary art” for me [for context, I work at a contemporary art museum], and one of them said “Is it art that’s made with contempt?”

And unfortunately that’s the funniest thing a student has ever said to me in 10 years of teaching

i don’t think bodily autonomy for minors should be a luck of the draw type thing where you have to cross your fingers that your parents are chill about it.
