IT’S QUEER WOMEN ON ICE!!! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT!!!
recap for those who don’t know/weren’t aware WHY this league is so important and why we should support it — this is the first season of the professional women’s hockey league (pwhl) in which these female athletes (olympians, former u18, and college stars, ect) are being properly compensated for their skills — AKA making enough to not have to work two jobs while also playing hockey — it’s not millions but it’s enough — starting at 35k, average at about 55k, and each team will carry a minimum six players signed to three-year contracts paying them $80,000 annually. The highest salary is rumoured to be at 120k. The league already has a collective bargaining agreement as well that covers the next eight years. There have been successful women’s hockey leagues in the past, but none began with the kind of staying power this one has.
it has 6 teams
Toronto
Boston
Minnesota
Ottawa
Montreal
New York
The first season began on Jan. 1, 2024, with each team playing a 24-game schedule, 12 games at home and 12 away. All games are be streamed FOR FREE on the pwhl’s youtube channel. In Canada you can also catch the games on sportsnet, cbc, and tsn depending on the day. Link to the schedule.
This is so big for not only women’s hockey, but women’s sports in general. This league was crafted together as a labour of love by women’s hockey alumni like Jayna Hefford and other female athletes such as Billie Jean King. People who love the sport, and women’s sports in general and want to see it develop and succeed so little girls can have a dream and goal of playing professionally like boys do.
support this league. It’s our best shot
Reblogging again for the above. Go watch some games!! Support the league!! The schedule is here.
The PWHL was made after dissolving the PHF. There is plenty of tension and mixed history about whether this is better and who all has been left behind in the transition, but one thing is certain. The PWHL got viewership in its first season like we’ve never seen for women’s hockey. More fans and more coverage means more leverage for better compensation.
for reasons that aren’t important right now, i had to get on the wiki list of all hockey nicknames to look something up. this turned out to be a treasure trove of joy. i have compiled my favorites for you now
When I saw this house that’s listed for $7,690,000 I was wondering what was so special about it. Sure, it’s big, but it’s kind of plain, and I’m not thrilled w/the garage.
It does have beautiful grounds.
And a pool.
The kitchen is large, but if you like open concept, they put up a wall so you can’t see the family room.
Most people want to keep an eye on the kids or interact with company while they’re in the kitchen.
The bath’s aren’t spectacular.
The master is plain.
And the kids share one room. So, why is it so expensive?
Because it has a full size regulation hockey rink with heated team benches, lighted scoreboard, and locker rooms.
There are 2 of these- one for each team. They say that the Rangers played here.
Of course, since it’s your own home, you have a sky box.
i feel like we dont talk enough about how two of the most decorated female hockey players ever, one a former captain for team canada and the other for the usa, fell in love and had a baby together
small gay sports baby
Ok but where is my cheesey lesbian rom-com about them falling in love while playing against each other
Okay but the funniest part is this has happened multiple times. There are three instances of former Canadian and American national team players who have gotten married:
-Caroline Ouellette and Julie Chu (both former captains)
-Gillian Apps (former alternate captain) and Meghan Duggan (former captain)
-Jayna Hefford (former alternate captain) and Kathleen Kauth
Seriously it’s like tradition at this point. I’m sure there’s a betting pool on who’s going to get married next. God I love the rival lesbian jocks trope.
In case y’all didn’t click that link I need to make sure you see the headline.
Look I don’t even know from sports but every time I check in on Hockey, they’re out doing something buckwild and guys,
Guys,
This is the Year For It.
Drop the Pucks Drop Them ALL. RIP OPEN THAT ENVELOPE AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF MADNESS
It’s worth noting that, in the NHL at least, this would only happen during playoff times. B/c after the lockout in 05/06 they changed the format for how overtime works in the regular season. They only play one, shortened period then it goes to a shootout if the game is still tied.
Only playoff games play multiple overtime periods.
So I guess we gotta hope for a really, really long playoff game.
And honestly, I feel like that rule is just cause by that point they just want the damn game done and over with. Bc the players will have played the equivalent a 2 and half extra games (4 periods = 1 game, so the main game, plus a game and a half of OT).
