That Bloomridge Park was blanketed with snow did not take away from the populace’s enjoyment of the place, quite the contrary. The adults were strolling about and marvelling at the winter wonderland while the children were building snowmen or engaging each other in snowball fights. Others were brave enough to test the pond’s icy surface, daring to slide and skate around.

Still others had brought their pets to the park to give them the opportunity to run and roll around in the snow, and today, Shadowheart and Imrae were among these people.

The bottle on the shelf was mocking him.

Green glass, elegant label with the vintner’s crest, and it even had a nice scarlet bow tied around its neck, awaiting its grand opening on the twelfth night.

‘What a perfect dilemma that evil drow wizard has put me in,’ Astarion thought as he glanced at the offending object through his fingers while they massaged his forehead. How in the Hells was he supposed to match, or even better, top such a gift?

“Has nobody taught you not to loiter?”

“Nobody. I am a feral one, just like you, old bat,” Imrae replied as he rose from his spot at the bottom of the stairs of Jaheira’s home. He offered her a hand as she descended, and they continued arm in arm through the snow and frozen mud.

“Ever the gentleman. Is that how the creatures of the night lure the unsuspecting?”

“Sometimes,” Imrae said with a demure smile. “But helping an old lady across the street and to the Solstice Market is my good deed of the day.”

“Keep smiling, love, they need to adore us.”

“I doubt I have a choice at this point, my jaw feels locked in place.”

Astarion patted Imrae’s hand. “Good. That way you aren’t tempted otherwise.”

“You delight in my pain, do you not?” the drow whispered.

He only received his beloved’s pitched fluttering laughter as an answer, and it made him laugh in genuine as well.

The annual Winter Dance at the Ravengard Estates was in full swing, and Astarion had insisted that they needed to attend the festivities together to represent the enclave down in the Underdark. It had only been a matter of time until a community of several thousand intelligent undead would gain notoriety on the surface, and how to better to show the mortal population that vampire spawn were emotional beings than by putting their loving relationship on display for all to gawk at?

“Do you have to do this on my good silk sheets?”

“Curious. That implies that Astarion Ancunín has been fobbed into purchasing bad silk sheets, and they are hidden somewhere, an eternal mark of shame.” Imrae met his beloved’s scolding gaze when he looked up from his preparations.

“Don’t be smart with me. You put sand in our bed.”

Astarion

The Pot and Kettle Tavern bustled with a cacophony of thundering heartbeats, raucous laughter, and swirling dancers as the bards' faces grew red from the effort of supplying the busy inn with entertainment all night. From their vantage point at the table tucked deep in the back, Astarion and Miss Fortune watched the ladies of the "good and the great" houses of Baldur's Gate become increasingly more inebriated on bottomless pours of Baldur's Grape. The deeper into their overpriced crystal chalices they got, the harsher their tones grew as they lashed orders at the staff as if they owned the place.

This tastefully decorated patriar's respite, with its purple velvet drapery and warm lighting, hovered on the cusp between the Lower and Upper Cities, a place for society's elite to giggle in delight at the thought of "slumming it" without sacrificing any of the glamor, comforts, or safety they were used to. In short, this was not one of Astarion's old haunts back in the day. But he was hunting for something completely different now, and from the looks of it he'd have his pick among this pack of nattering nuisances.

"Play 'Three Birds' again!" one of the women yelled above the din of the crowd, teetering and waving her chalice high in the air. Lady Linnacker, if Astarion's intel was correct; matriarch endowed with generations-old money from gem mines in Tethyr. She appeared to be the leader of this pack of hyenas, her bite just as pernicious as her bark. But while looking down on service staff wasn't illegal, he declared her outfit a crime against humanity.

The night was freezing, but thankfully clear, perfect for what Imrae had in mind.

One quick Misty Step brought him from the rooftop terrace of the Elfsong Tavern to onto the shingles of the Stormshore Tabernacle, and he settled in a spot where the bouts of the icy breeze could not reach him. Wrapped in warm furs and equipped with a flask of hot tea, he waited as he gazed up at the starry sky.

Miss Fortune

"I must admit I was surprised to hear you volunteer to accompany me today," Wyll said genially while they walked to the Rivington refugee camp, his eye bright and smile easy. "I assumed you'd want to spend our rest day with your lover."

"It's been a while since I got to check in with our tiefling friends," Miss Fortune lied. They hoped he wouldn't be sore for too long when he discovered their ulterior motives for joining him today. "I've grown fond of them all, especially the young scoundrels. And I'm sure I have plenty of things to atone for, so why not do a bit of community service?"

The sudden force of Wyll's hand clapping their back threw off Miss Fortune's balance momentarily, making them sway to avoid stumbling. "That's the spirit," he approved. "I just hope you can keep up. You handle a dagger quite skillfully, but I've yet to see you wield a chef's knife or face off against a bundle of carrots."

Miss Fortune

Another day, when Miss Fortune wasn't busy desecrating an alcove bookshelf with their hands down the back of Astarion's trousers, they'd have to school Rolan on having better security surrounding his private studies—especially while he was out. Nobody had stopped them when the rogues dashed up the stairs, soft giggles spilling forth every time Astarion pinched their rear.

One of the novices on patrol approached when Astarion initially backed them into the alcove between two of Rolan's portals and Miss Fortune threw a leg around him, but they were easily embarrassed. Seeing the rogues would not be deterred, they simply muttered they weren't paid enough for this, told them to keep their hands off the merchandise and portals, and left them to their entanglement.

People were predictable in that respect, so often willing to underestimate or ignore two lovers seemingly unable to keep their hands off each other. It made infiltrating public spaces or eavesdropping in dark corners all too easy; the hardest part was pulling back on their passion just enough to remain alert.

A dozen pairs of little eyes looked up at Imrae, fascinated by the sight of a real and at that friendly drow wizard who was holding onto his staff for dear life.

“Do you know Drizzt?” a tiefling girl asked.

Imrae heard Astarion and Shadowheart chortle across the room, and he suppressed the impulse to glare at them. This was his beloved’s fault to begin with, having thrown him under the cart to deal with Halsin’s gaggle of curious orphan children by excusing himself indoors in a hurry despite the very clouded sky, and Shadowheart had done nothing to rescue him so far either. Traitors.
