I have no idea how i managed to stumble onto your vampire/play with your food fic but by god, i'm so glad i did. You're one of the rare (fic?) writer who just GET the vampire trope
Like for sure, despite being in the monster category, vampires come with a certain form of sensuality and mystic, it's a bit more sophisticated, their romantic relationships have constant "i'm under your spell" undertones and your fic covers all of that. But one of the key element that made the trope famous is the underlying fear that never quite go away. You aren't under their spell because they're charming, they're charming because you are their prey and their charm is how they lure you in! They're goddamn predators and seduction is how they hunt!
So i fucking love how terror was omnipresent in your fic!! Maybe the MC finds pleasure in the situation, maybe they're partially here out of choice, but sometimes, it's literally out of pure survival. The worldbuilding doesn't tell us if supernatural strenght is part of your vampires lore (= she could get her neck snapped in the blink of an eye), but it doesn't need to! You feel the danger either way and that made for an absolutely exquite story
I can't remember the eng title, but there's a still from a vampire movie where the protagonist is dancing with a vampire in a ballroom covered in mirrors. Beautiful and enchanting scenery, with tons of guests around. But then the lack of reflection, apart from her own, immediately reminds you just how close she is to becoming dessert at anytime. Reading your fic felt exactly like that ❤️ captivating, carnal and terrifying all at the same time
Also idk if i'm reading this wrong, but did that last pararaph implied MC is/was a vampire hunter ??? So many questions !! Were they hunting and got captured ? Did they fell their mission and fell under BC spell ? Did he purposely go hunting for a hunter ?! So many exciting possibilites !
Anyway, thank you for sharing this beautiful work with us ! Hope you have a lovely day
First, Anon, hello and thank you for this kind message. I saw it when I woke up this morning, and I was grinning like an idiot.
Second, I just want to say thank you for taking the time out to share your thoughts with me. It’s really validating when people are on the same wavelength as me.
My Monarchs series was supposed to be this sweet and wholesome set of fics (except for Jeongin’s initial rehabilitation). That’s totally fine. It scratches the itch for the romance girlie in me. Play With Your Food is gonna be this gritty, old-school vibe of vampires that lack a moral compass. I want evil characters who are selfish and do what they want. They’re not bound by human emotions. I was hesitant at first because there are some dark themes I’m exploring, but I wanted to have a full spectrum of vampires I create. The goal was to test myself and see if I could have the polar opposite of what I’ve written. There are people on the other end looking for these kinds of vampires (including me).
I think you really hit the nail on the coffin (hehe) about the vibes I was going for. These vampires are powerful, ethereal beings that are masters of seduction and temptation. They have to be. It’s how they bewitch their prey. Some humans will go searching for it. And I think movie you mentioned is Van Helsing (one of my favorites and is inspo). The mirror scene is incredible. Her realization that everyone in the room is a vampire but her is absolutely terrifying. Dracula is playing nice, keeping the vampires compliant, all while trying to tempt her into accepting a fate like his to become one of his wives.
My MC in part one is terrified of what Chan is. She’s no fool; she knows what he does outside those castle walls and, like she tells Minho, ‘It’s better in here with him than against him.’ She recognizes her place on the food chain. She also knows that her safety isn’t guaranteed. There is a line that says, 'Sometimes her life depends on it (obedience).’ Because it does. Chan can grow bored at any minute.
So that leads us to the last part of your message and my favorite line of the fic: the implication she is a vampire hunter. She is, and her story isn’t done. Act III will be the origins how she ended up in this position. So I beg of you, please stick around for the delicious meal. It’s honestly gonna be a fight to post the Minlix one before it because I want to drop this Hyunchan so badly.
But thank you again; I hope you like the other parts I will be releasing. If it all goes well and people want it, I’ll have a prequel of Chan and his maker. Just so we can see where he gets his behavior from.
