A classic point-and-click adventure with high production values that plays it too safe and loves its idols a bit too much.

Looks great with its hand-drawn art. Animation is passable but the protagonist often looks robotic.

While the music is mostly anodyne and often unnecessary, it’s used sparingly. This is a big plus, as I much prefer ambient sound to constant background music. There are some pleasant surprises, though, like a big band style number with great vocals.

Voice acting is great across the board, and the dialogue is mostly good too.

The protagonist's observations are a clever mix of humor and hints. The game doesn't skimp on unique lines when trying incorrect solutions either, which is nice.

The character ensemble is alright, although there are a bit too many sassy and rude characters to my liking, and a few that feel like walking tropes.

It's been bug-free so far.

However, the game is seriously hamstrung by classic adventure game moon logic in its puzzle design. This is one thing that did *not* need to be brought back from the days of yore.

Way too often you have an idea of what you're supposed to do, and the elements are right there, but the protagonist just says "I couldn't do that", with no accompanying useful hint. Then, when you consult the built-in walkthrough, the real solution is revealed to be something ridiculously specific with extra steps that make no sense.

The game also borrows a bit too much from its influences and feels unoriginal to the point of you going "Hold on - aren't they just ripping off older games?". I'm not against green voodoo flames, lost treasure, pirates and lovesick ghosts, but come on - that's Monkey Island 3 and you know it.

(And the protagonist's VA is quite reminiscent of Dominic Armato.)

The overall tone is a bit too reminiscent of children's cartoons, which isn't helped by its whimsical-but-boring, Harry Potter style magical soundtrack.

One thing that's more of a pet peeve: The writers are obsessed with having characters deliver information in rhyme. I don't get it, and it's doubly annoying because the rhymes generally aren't very good. It just makes the writing feel amateurish, not charming.

(Also, what kind of a name for a game is "Foolish Mortals"? Well, at least it's not called "Mwahahaha".)

Still, it *is* very good and definitely worth playing. Here's hoping Inklingwood finds their own voice in their next projects!

Compared to other point & click games (Monkey Island, Thimbleweed Park, The Drifter, etc.):
• Childish cartoons and dialogue
• Very slow, often unskippable dialogue
• Tries to be funny, but rarely is
• Some plots are good; others are somewhat strange
On the plus side: The developers seem passionate and on the right track, and I’m glad to see new point & click games still being made.

A modern classic. Great voice acting, puzzles and (for the most part) art. Anyone who enjoys Monkey Island should enjoy this.

Minor quirks: Moving around is a bit awkward. Some inconsistencies art style wise. Can't overwrite saves.
