A treasure more valuable than your own blood.

Walking Simulators are famous for the beauty and richness of their worlds, and Deep Beyond is no exception. Even though there are some parts that don't make sense, such as small problems here and there, it stands out more than it should as a walking simulator.

Story

We follow the story of Lilly, a treasure hunter abandoned by her father as a child. She and Howard, her father's best friend who took care of Lilly, are looking for a very valuable chalice... But it seems that some very 'friendly' people are also keeping an eye on this chalice.

Deep Beyond has a story that is a little difficult to understand... Where can I start? Well, the game explains the main topics that you need to know, but it doesn't explain smaller things...

One example would be Howard, is he really just a friend of your father's? Why did he decide to take care of Lilly out of the blue? Has Lilly really become a treasure hunter or is she just helping Howard? I don't want to give away spoilers so I'll stop here, but by the end of the game you're left with more questions than answers.

This has led to the story having a few holes, but nothing that will make you not understand anything. I think they cut out some of the less important parts so they wouldn't have to dub everything, which I can understand, since not everyone has the money to do what they've done here.

Gameplay

Deep Beyond is a Walking Simulator as I said, so there's not much to talk about here. The puzzles in the game are quite unique, but nothing too complicated or challenging.

There's nothing bad to say about the gameplay, apart from the fact that sometimes when you interact with something, Lilly's hand sometimes goes through that object, such as doors, items, etc. Rarely she make items float in her hand as well. This doesn't get in the way at all, but it is quite annoying, especially for a game of this style.

Graphics

I spent a long time looking at the game's screenshots to see if it was really the graphics... The game surprised me, everything is a work of art. The choice of colors here was beautiful, nothing was strange, on the contrary, it was very well balanced. What stood out the most were the clouds and the mountains in the background, all very well done, bringing this world to life.

Each place we visited was more beautiful than the other, they really went the extra mile in this regard. The only thing I found strange was how some characters who don't have mouths try to speak, as well as having expressions that I don't think they should have... Well, that's better than not having them, but it's a bit strange still.

Audio

The music and sound effects were remarkable as well. Nothing surprising, but it made everything much more enjoyable. The music is played when we are involved in tense or important moments, such as puzzles or more tense situations related to the story. This made each place much more unique and striking, instead of being played all the time throughout the game, making everything tedious.

The sound effects matched the location perfectly. As I said, nothing surprising, but it brought each place we visited to life.

Verdict

There's no denying that the developers have done a great job with the game. Even with its problems, Deep Beyond is a work of art with a beautiful world, rich in detail. It's very short, as you can complete it in 1 hour, but it's a good game for a Walking Simulator, well worth the price.

Score:
8.5

Strong Points:

+ Simple, but different and unique puzzles.
+ Graphics is a masterpiece.
+ Each place you visit is rich in detail.
+ Striking music with good sound effects.

Weak Points:

- Confusing story with little explanation.
- Lilly's hands go through some items.

Here's a gameplay video of the game if you want to take a look:

Note: The review has been translated from my original review written in Portuguese (Brazil). Even though I did my best to correct and convert some slangs used, I'm sorry if something looks sloppy or amiss.

As with all reviews, this is my opinion on what I thought of the game. If you find it interesting, I recommend you buy and play it to see if it's worth it or not youself.
