It's good and worth a playthrough; I enjoyed it.

Overall, the game starts very strong with good combat and has an interesting "mix and match" spell system. The story is very engaging, with some gorgeous presentation and voice acting.
It picks up even further toward the middle when you gain even more abilities and trinkets. The story culminates at that point as well.
For the last third (Maybe half?) of the progression... it goes on a serious nosedive. Not exactly sure why, but the game clearly overstays it's welcome. The story also undergo a weird shift that wasn't welcome to me.

It is still a good game, and a good Final Fantasy at that.
It's worth your attention shall you seek a story-based action-RPG.

Good:
- Tight and fun gameplay and battles The Diablo-3-esque skill system works well. Looking for your perfect rotation is engaging, and testing new spells is always exciting.
- Very pretty with great voice acting and presentation. Some battles and sequences are amazing.

Mid:
- Visibility in battle can get really bad.
- Frankly, the game isn't far for being an absolute banger, but it's like they couldn't pick between going full action or full RPG. As such, it's like either side of the game isn't able to live to its full potential and is coexisting in a weird way. The equipement, for example, is way too linear. A shame.

Bad:
- Bad performances. But in today's landscape, having 'buttery silky smooth' 43 FPS with framegen on is the standard, so let's just enjoy our TAA and blurry-looking post-effects, shall we.
- The side quests are both too numerous and too boring; they should have slashed their amount by at least a third.
- Second half of the game is much less enjoyable.
