I first touched this before I knew much about the Metal Gear franchise, and though it could be enjoyed independently of chronology on both ends, it's best appreciated if you understand why we're here in the first place. I've started this one 5 times, reached the end twice. This takes place in the 1980s, MGS3 takes place in the 1960s, MGS1 and 2 take place in the 2000s. If you were to play any game before this, a true fan might say to play Peace Walker (1970s), unfortunately, this is still not available on PC and might never be (fingers crossed). Mechanically, this is definitely the most modern-feeling game in the series, that alone makes this a great introduction (no, you can't run at 45 miles an hour in any of the other games). Some of the most iconic lines from the franchise, but also some of the strangest writing choices. Listening to the Hamburger tapes is a must.

The best attribute this game has is replayability. And then personality. There are very few games that can claim to be a spin-off of a lauded series, only to be celebrated all by its lonesome. If you're a fan of this game and haven't played the rest then you totally should, but still, feel free to call yourself a fan anyway. Incredible music score that times up nicely with boss fights, intimate combat and slicing mechanics, and on-the-nose writing and characters. I pray they make a sequel some day.
