I'm unsure where to begin, honestly. Let's start with the premise. You, the Reaper, are tasked by your mysterious employer with investigating the significance of a strange new drug, called Ash, which unravels into a conspiracy between three undead gangs: the Zombie Kingz, the 1000 Year Royals, and the Dredged.

This game is often described as a cross between Hotline Miami and Gunpoint, which does paint a decent picture of what to expect. The game has a side on perspective like Gunpoint, though the gameplay is a little more slow-paced than Hotline Miami. Not all enemies drop their weapons, meaning ammo conservation and aiming for headshots is key to completing a level, and while running in and playing on reaction time alone is possible, you die in one hit, so it's often better to plan out your assault.

The Reaper can turn into smoke with a flick of a lighter, allowing him to enter vents to flank enemies, and knocking on doors can lure them in for an easy kill. Enemies can also hear your gunfire depending on how loud your weapon is, and enemies react differently to this (generally, melee wielding enemies charge straight towards the noise, whereas gun-toting enemies usually take cover and wait for a few seconds before investigating). Flicking off lights limits their visibility.

This predictability allows you to plan how to tackle each room. Or alternatively, you can rush in and shoot everything. There are many weapons in the game, whether available to pick up within levels or buy from the gun dealer at the docks, there are weapons available for most playstyles.

The game's soundtrack is excellent, too. If you've played Risk of Rain you're likely familiar with the game's composer, Chris Christodoulou. I've personally purchased the soundtrack off Bandcamp and listen to it regularly.

With the game comes a level editor that allows you to make your own levels and share them on the workshop. There are many excellent maps available on the workshop, some even setting up their own narrative through cutscenes and unique tricks that the levels in the main game don't take advantage of.

Deadbolt is a game I've come to be obsessed with. I simply love it - from its atmosphere, its storytelling with hints littered throughout, the gameplay and the music, I can say it is one of my favourite games of all time. It's not without its faults - some deaths can feel unfair, particularly when enemies overlap with one another, hiding so you only see one of them, and sometimes enemies can behave unpredictably, but such faults, in my opinion, don't detract from my overall enjoyment of the game.

It says this is your first review. Considering how damn excellent this one is, you should be writing more of them!
