Don't know how I haven't already reviewed this game tbh.

The PvE in this game is fantastic and an amazing experience. Most of the levels are well designed with some exceptions (looking at you Farron Keep), and the core gameplay is really satisfying, albeit with a steep learning curve. You will undoubtedly die as a new player but the satisfaction of overcoming the adversity makes it worth it in the end. The setting and lore of the game is amazing and give the world a bleak and oppressive feel in a good way. Overall I'd recommend the PvE to anyone willing to die spend some time dying and learning from their mistakes. Also the DLC is great, especially The Ringed City, and I'd highly recommend getting it bundled with the game if you can.

The PvP of this game is where the majority of my hours lie and while I wouldn't say its as flawless as the PvE and has some (a lot) of problems it's still one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had and keeps me coming back for more. Invasions are rarely fair fights, but the asymmetric nature of the encounter is a unique mechanic that is more or less specific to Dark Souls and adds a lot of flavour to the combat. Duels don't have quite the same appeal as invasions imo, but against a skilled opponent can be really fun and intense.

PvP won't be for everyone (especially now in 2021), but it absolutely can be a blast and I'd still recommend trying it.

Overall, one of my all time favourite games and absolutely worth picking up on sale.
