Natural Wonder Jähennem Derwezesi

The Darvaza gas crater, located in the central part of Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert, is also known as the “Jähennem Derwezesi” (lit. Gate of Hell) due to the fiercely burning flames within the pit. The origins of this burning pit trace back to its exploration by Soviet engineers, who ignited it to prevent the dispersion of poisonous gas. Yet, the immense natural gas reserves sustained the flames for decades until authorities ordered the fire extinguished, citing the need to protect local residents' health, the environment, and the natural gas industry.
