Keep Breathing

about

One particular day, when I went someplace quiet enough I could hear myself think, I came back with the seed of a song. I wrote the words while I was sitting on a plane, and I could hear a little of the melody, and when I got home I finished the music. It is about just listening and remembering, living and breathing. Listening to remember what we’re living for.

lyrics

We have only to follow the path for a little
Away from the the roughshod road
Till the racket falls back
And a different veil settles
In place of the wearying load

At first it seems something like stillness
But the air hums and shimmers around
The breeze wakes the birds in the branches
And the quiet is full of sound

The brook sings its old song, still runs as it ran
In the cradle it shaped from the good giving land
I can sing with my heart cradled safe in your hands
Here where life will keep breathing as long as it can

And the last breath means only release and rebirth
Leaves turn with the earth as they should
No evil outlasts the persistence of stone
Or withstands the warm wisdom of wood

Night shelters the murmur of feathers
Lake lolls on the mud-black beach
Gathering light from the stars where they smile
Outside of the false shadow's reach

And the brook sings its old song, still runs as it ran
In the cradle it shaped from the good giving land
I can sing with my heart cradled safe in your hands
Here where life will keep breathing as long as it can

I sing with my heart cradled safe in your hands
Where life will keep breathing as long as it can
