about

bunjamin franklin's debut album "Context" sets out to tie together loose ends and lay the foundation for themes worthy of further exploration.

Ramping from 80 to 120 beats per minute, the opening track combines an instrumental house track (mostly composed in one day after an early morning shift at a warehouse in 2021) with samples sequenced almost four years later, and the album subsequently steps up the tempo and rhythmic complexity over the next two tracks: "FFaammee" and "(in) My Love" -- the former a previously unreleased track from 2023.

"(2,3)FOUR" begins a transition from house to techno and is the first track on the album to include samples from digitized VHS tapes. Entering the 130+ BPM range, "Get In Touch" makes use of ambient noise and generated DTMF tones to complement drum patterns and a distorting bassline. Having established the "homeless musician making beats at the library" vibe, "Proof Of Concept" transforms a half-baked idea from 2018 into a 3/4-baked idea with the sound of a window AC unit recorded upstate in Buffalo.

Moving into a remaster of the first-released single from the album, "NO VAPES ALLOWED" introduces the main sample of "feedback" before "NYP" tightens it in conjunction with more field recordings and synthesized basslines. Tapping into the sounds of the New York City Subway, "4 Lexington Avenue Express" crosses the 140 BPM threshold, manipulating and layering a voice memo recorded while riding the namesake train through Brooklyn.

The album's penultimate and final tracks both extensively process audio from VHS-C camcorder clips taken between 2019 and 2021 to develop distinctive timbres and rhythms. "BROKE A$$ BUNNY ($15/h)" incorporates additional NYC subway noises before bringing the album to a close with excerpts from one of bunjamin franklin's many VHS tapes preserving the memory of television in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
