every jellybun gets her unique bows when she comes of age, then she petitions the Stars to lead her on her own personal 'quest' of sorts. after that is completed, she earns her markings (the red swirls on Starburst here, the fleur de lie on Fracture's hips, Frosting's sprinkles).
Starburst's quest was to heal all the broken stars in the Milky Way. but those things are very sharp.
