So lately I've been working on a little speculative ecosystem project, picking back up the work I did about four years ago. A lot of those creatures were designed for prompts for an art challenge that I just happened decided to use in that way, but I was thinking how much I'd like to have an actual list of prompts geared towards the goal I set for myself. Which lead me to making up this, a little list of prompts based on very broad ecological concepts so as to be as applicable as possible to the widest possible range of different projects.

    1. Producer - give me an autotroph ie. an animal that feeds directly on an energy source, like light, radiation, or chemicals
    2. Primary Consumer - predator of the autotroph you just made (cows are predators of grass!)
    3. Secondary Consumer - now what’s something that eats that animal.
    4. Tertiary Consumer - or an “Apex predator”, an organism with no natural predators of its own
    5. Decomposer - something that consumes the remains of any of the previous organisms.
    6. Parasite of any of the above organisms
    7. Hyperparasite ie. something that parasitizes that parasite
    8. Coprophage - something that eats dung
    9. Ecosystem engineer - an organism that creates habitats for other organisms
    10. An organism with a hard shell, carapace, etc.
    11. Durophagic predator of previous organism
    12. An organism which occupies different trophic levels in its adult and immature forms
    13. A sessile organism
    14. An organism that with a symbiotic relationship with any of the previous organisms
    15. An autotroph small enough to fit on your fingertip
    16. An autotroph small enough to fit in your hand
    17. An autotroph taller than a house.
    18. Autotroph with specialized defenses
    19. Autotroph that depends on a symbiotic relationship
    20. The organism the previous organism depends on
    21. A fossorial organism
    22. An aquatic organism
    23. A cursorial predator
    24. An ambush predator
    25. An organism that utilizes mimicry
    26. An organism not visible to the naked eye
    27. An R selected species - an organism which has many offspring, each with a low chance of survival
    28. A K selected species - an organism which has few offspring, each with a high chance of survival
    29. A keystone species - an organism who’s presence defines the ecosystem it is a part of, without it this ecosystem would not exist in the same state
    30. An extremely specialized organism
    31. An adaptable generalist

This is formatted as a month-long challenge, but I don't think anyone needs to approach it that way if they want to do it.

Part of the goal of this is to not just design organisms, but to think about how each thing you design interacts with the other creatures, and how they form an ecosystem together!

  • too many stories about turning yourself into a monster as a metaphor for pretending to be something you aren't and losing yourself in the process. not enough stories about turning yourself into a monster as a metaphor for choosing to openly embrace yourself even if it's strange to other people

  • any time the conclusion of the story is "and then he turned back to normal because what really matters is being true to yourself and being loved for being who you really are: a boring human" i hear a spongebob boo-womp in my head. can you tell i'm autistic by the way

OUGHHHHHHH its been a hot minute since ive thought about my little guys………….. awhile back i was playing with the idea of dragging and dropping them into a wf99 style situation and putting the hex in the whalefallverse . i got sidetracked and didnt do much with it but it might be fun to revisit, especially in terms of translating the protoframe situation into whale-mutation…… i could retype all of this but im feeling headachey so were screenshotting that shit babey

  • you should balance out One Bad Eye by having characters with multiple eyes

  • answered by tauforged

funny you should mention! dmitri’s radiation scarring that covers up one eye actually gives way to Many Eyes when he is particularly upset or stressed out.. i could have sworn i’d drawn this before but it wasn’t a very detailed doodle so i decided to draw it for real… ill post it on its own cuz i ended up accidentally spending a ton of time on it BUUUUUT heres a little preview
