sometimes I talk about disliking copyright/IP on here, and I always try to stress that the reason these conversations matter is because copyright law is used in real life to hurt real people. I want to highlight a current example of this happening which I haven't seen talked about on my dash yet.

Solar Being is a small business run by two natural hair sculpting artists. their art has gone viral online a few times, and one of their most recognizable creations are their shaped hair puffs:

recently, their business has been under attack by frivolous DMCA & copyright infringement complaints by a competing company. Solar Being has had to close pre-orders for their hair extensions and redirect the funding they raised through a kickstarter campaign into now building a legal defense fund, at the expense of their allocated labor and production budget. in the meantime, they can't even post uncensored photos of their star puffs to social media without facing copyright claims. this issue goes beyond just promotional materials and is also affecting any posts where they (or their customers!) have their hair puffs visible.

on Solar Being's legal defense page they say they "believe [geometric hairstyle] designs should remain free for others to use, reinterpret, and express through their creative and commercial endeavors". and if these copyright infringement complaints are held up, it will likely affect the rights of other natural hair sculpting artists to create designs like this.

if you'd like to support Solar Being's legal fund they're accepting donations now, and I'd recommend supporting them through social media as well. I'm not personally associated with Solar Being and am just repeating what they've already said through their website and social media.

lots of people around copyright/IP discussions like to talk about supporting artists, and if you want direct that supportive energy somewhere productive I feel this situation is one that deserves your attention.

The genocide in Gaza has been ongoing for almost two years now and it feels like people have moved on from it. Campaigns are constantly stagnating and not enough is coming in to keep people afloat, and this as the situation on the ground only continues to worsen. Even when there was some food available, it would be sold for exorbitant prices. Aid has been consistently denied and enough has never been let in, but now nothing is coming in at all. The US and Israel are working to deliberately starve the people of Gaza, and they now face a serious famine. What "Aid Points" these countries set up are only used to target and kill people who are trying to feed their families. There is no food left, and what little can be found is sold at even more expensive prices than before. To deliberately inflict this kind of hunger is a war crime, it is inhumane and unconscionable, and even more so when we know that the children of Gaza aren't spared from it. My friend Dina has two children, one who is a toddler and the other only about a year old, who are having to drink salt water to stay alive. Dina and her children have been suffering from intense hunger, and I am scared for my friend everyday. But people are turning away from Gaza, and people are turning away from her. Gaza needs your attention and your action now more than ever. If you can help my friend at all, if you can donate to her campaign or share her story, it would help more than you know. Please don't forget about her.

To those who don’t know me or haven’t heard my story I’m Abdul Rahman a high school senior Tawjihi from Gaza I was preparing to take my English exam on Saturday October 7 2023 but the war changed everything The bombing began and we were forced to flee our home after the occupation threatened our neighborhood on Sunday October 15 2023

Since then life has stopped We've been displaced more than ten times Now we live in tents that aren't even fit for animals suffering through the heat of summer the freezing cold of winter and flooding when it rains

Our home was destroyed our future shattered and our small shops our only source of income are gone I’ve lost everything except for my dream of escaping this nightmare and continuing my education in a safe place
