  The Lights are a trio from Seattle and Beautiful Bird marked their first long playing record, originally turned loose in 2003. To call it a "good record" or "a gem" or something like that kind of misses the point completely for us. For me at Wantage, when I first heard the Lights, a couple years before this got released, I saw and heard a band that possessed that ultra-rare band chemistry that moved what often was a pretty good rock show at a bar into the realm of real, living art and poetry, in addition a great rock show at a bar. And the next roughly 10 years would be punctuated by getting to see and hear the Lights live, and their new songs, and support their music and tours.
  
  Musically they've always been a band comfortable with big feedbacking rock parts, dark parts, sad parts, guitar jangle, and heaving swing that doesn't translate to being written about. Not to mention the quiet parts, and introspection, and weirdness, and poetry. It's rock and roll, but it's rock and roll + art. And that might hit you as pompous, but the Lights chose their own path and walk it proudly and confidently. They’ve also some of the greatest hooks I've ever heard. The Rogalski/Albertson rhythm section has its own voice, its own beats and plays thoroughly like they mean it, loud and hard when the song calls for it, and subtler, quieter when that's what's needed. The guitars and singing (Chambers) are equally inventive, unique and so thoroughly memorable and singable, it's hard to not come off as a drooling sycophant. But what blissful sycophancy.
  
  When it’s considered as it should be, on the whole, you've got rock and roll for the ages. And what's best about it is that the Lights live the sentiment that success is about making good music, enduring relationships and great, great performances. Art, not commerce. And the band is still a band, even after a rather extended break! They've been practicing and played two release shows around this record and we couldn't be happier about all of that.
  
  The story of Beautiful Bird goes back to 2003, early days for the Lights, but the members had all played in some iteration of the thing for years. And, the thing is, in the early aughts, pre-big vinyl comeback, a lot of us were caught up in the "CDs are it" nonsense, and long story shorter, Beautiful Bird only was put out on CD and it always deserved a big LP and some liner notes. Et voila! For the first time ever, we've got it available on vinyl. It’s 140 gram Clear with Black & White splatter vinyl - Pressed at Cascade Pressing, with new artwork by Craig Chambers. Layout and Insert by Ben Rupp. Jacket cover screened by Josh and PJ in Missoula. Limited edition to 330.
